I need a whole new server. There are many configurations in my price range for new server hardware but I can't focus on everything. My site is popular and current server can't handle the load. It's SLOW. I need to know where to put my dollars so I ask this. If given a choice would you rather have your server dollars go toward 1. CPU power - More cores or faster clock? 2. More memory? I have 12GB now 3. Faster I/O - 4 SSD RAID drives, SAS .. ? Or can I get by with less drives and focus on memory? 1,2 or 3 where should I put my dollars... ??? Your opinion please. Thank you

"This is the most serious bug you'll hear about this week: The issue dubbed CVE-0216-0778 has been identified and fixed in the OpenSSH. An early heads up came from Theo de Raadt in this mailing list posting. Can IPS be setup across multiple servers? (to leverage the power of several machines) How would this be done?

When installing IPS, should i select localhost or 127.0.0.1? I've seen that in linux, mySQL localhost uses a pipe to communicate instead of TCP/IP protocol and that it should be faster than 127.0.0.1. (In windows it seems that 127.0.0.1 is faster than localhost due to ip resolution) What is your experience with those values in CentOS or other linux distribution? Is there any noticeable speed difference?

I'll start by saying I'm quite disappointed in CentOS and their lack of ability to update. I'm running CentOS 6.7, which can't currently be upgraded to CentOS 7. Grievance #1 The only EPEL supported PHP version is 5.3.3. Grievance #2 All the other repo's I've found have been abandoned or are outdated, Webtatic, remi, rpm forge, etc... Does anyone have a repo that has an updated / maintained version of PHP 5.4 or 5.5 that can be used on CentOS 6.7? Or a stable / reliable way to upgrade CentOS 6.7 to 7, which has PHP 5.4 in its repo.

Im trying to create a rule in fail2ban to ban IP's that try to http flood the server. Like pressing F5 in the browser for several time. So, in jail.local i add the following code: [http-get-dos] enabled = true port = http, https filter = http-get-dos logpath = /var/log/nginx/domains/test.log maxretry = 10 findtime = 1 #ban for 5 minutes bantime = 600 action = iptables[name=HTTP, port=http, protocol=tcp] Then inside the filter.d folder, i created the file http-get-dos.conf with the following code: [Definition] failregex = ^<HOST> -.*GET.*/ ignoreregex = ^<HOST> -.*GET.*/uploads So this will check for 10 GET's in a second but will ignore GET …

Hello, Shared hosting is not always the most secure and fast for websites especially IPB, we tryed many hosters and panels and now i think that we found the right combination, we are using for many month now a free tool (panel and service) called serverpilot, its a cloud based panel and you dont need any thing to install on your server, all what you need is to take a vps from vultr or digital ocean, you can start with a 5$ vps at vultr. You launch the remote install from the serverpilot and it will install for you 4 php versions with php-fpm nginx, mysql, fail2ban, etc. and keep your server updated ! please check thoses videos : …

Hi, Our forum is hosted on 1 and 1. They have a declared php memory size of 131k. Trouble is, the pre install checks detect this as 120k. We only have around 500 users on our forum, and it's unlikely to go beyond 600ish, as it's a closed forum. On that basis I think the size should be ok (it certainly has been until now) but how do I get beyond this ? 1and1 don't want to increase the size, and have said I could override the reported size in the php.ini, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Any suggestions gratefully received, because at the moment I'm stuck.. Thanks, John.

its currently 10 gb large and was thinking about enabling innodb file per table and delete existing ibdata1 file so it get recreated upon mysql reboot so it would then only store data of table metadata only. But would it have any risk of possibly innodb crashes as its shared tablespace?

For us guys that use centOS and CentminMod, we know that that it brings allways a set of well established (and often a bit old) libraries. Stability, they say, but sometimes it gets annoying, as it happens with cURL, and consequently libCurl in PHP. Well the problem with updating cURL in PHP is that in CentminMod's PHP is compiled when installed. So this means that when it is compiled it hardcodes the cURL library that you have at the moment. The best solution is to: 1) Delete the cURL version that you have. 2) Install the new one 3) Update PHP version (recompile) Here is the step-by-step process: 1) Remove the cURL version that you hav…

Hello, It seems that only vimeo and youtube support ssl, and youtube video embed by IPS is still using http instead of https. On my site, non-ssl video is totally blocked, and browsers(Chrome, Edge and Firefox) doesn't shows any option for me to show unsecure content. For people who is using https, how do you deal with this problem?

Yes, I know our IP.Board 3.2.3 is egregiously out-of-date ! But will it be OK with an upgrade to PHP 5.5 which Site 5 is implementing soon ?? Or do I need to get my sorry buns in gear and upgrade IP.Board ? (No time!!) Thanks, Andrea B. UltravioletPhotography.com

Found this hardening guide online if you're running CentOS 7 Make sure you know what you're doing if you plan on doing the stuff on the list. Especially if your server is working with some sort of panel (cPanel, etc) https://highon.coffee/blog/security-harden-centos-7/

Hi, I had to import a big database. I ususally use SQLDumpSplitter. But with this solution, I have to import all files one after one into the new database. When I do that on local, I put the upload limit to 256mo. But on my live server, I don't want to increase this limit (now it is 2mo) Do you know some php script which can do that : - First I upload on serveur the .sql file - I give the db name, login and password to the script and it splits the file and updload by itself all splitted file to the database. Thank you ! (sorry for my bad english)

OK, the new versions of IPS recommends MySQL 5.6. What improvements are those of you using it seeing? What distro and repos are you using to get it? The current Debian stable (Jessie) doesn't have it. RHEL 7.x and the corresponding CentOS don't have it. I'm still running Debian Wheezy and am debating if I should upgrade to Jessie or migrate to a non LTS Ubuntu server then upgrade that to the new LTS when it comes out. Security support for Wheezy is going to run out before the next Ubuntu LTS is released. I think it's somewhat insane that Invision is recommending a MySQL version that isn't going to make it to most the main server OS distros for several more…

Has anyone set a CDN to full delivery IPS in the edges locations? IPS 4 is very good in caching for guests. If its power could be used to cache the html output for guests by a CDN (not only usual assets like images, JS and CSS), the website would be extremely fast. It´s like having a Varnish Cache in the server more closer to the website visitor. I have found this tutorial related to cloudfront: http://fideloper.com/cloudfront-full-site-delivery But I really would like to hear any experience from a IPS 4 user to see how the caching could be done considering the particular aspects of IPS 4.

Hi, I have a IPB3.4.8 community and I ran the UTF-8 convertor. All is ok with the convertor, but after there is this error on all pages : I tried utf8mb4 et utf8 but with the same error. A few years ago I was on Phpbb and I migrate it to IPB. Maybe this is the reason ? What should I do ? Thank you in advance for help

Hi, I want to test IPB4 on local before updating my production website (currently IPB 3.4.8). I saw a few post about it, but i have still some questions : I would like to make a full copy of my production server (export the whole database and download the source files) Next I have to change the IPBlicensekey on local (adding -TESTINSTALL ). How can I do that ? Then I should modify htaccess, and what else ? Once my website based on IPS 3.4.8 will work on local, I will update it to 4.0.13.1 Thank you ! (sorry for my bad english)
