Is it possible to block the middle finger (🖕) emoji?

Is there a way to prevent users from using the middle finger (🖕) emoji?

(I haven't tried to add an emoji to the bad word filter. I don't know if it is possible.)

Thanks,

Gabriel.

You can add it to your word filter, but you have to replace it with something else, maybe 😘

Give it a try then, because it is how you would block it.

@Nathan Explosion @dayh Worked like a charm. Thanks for the replacement suggestion, that was what I used here, it looks great! I didn't know that the bad word filter was also compatible with emojis. Great to know. Cheers!

Bear in mind that Emoji are, from a technical standpoint, just regular text just like regular numbers, letters, etc. They are just a part of the expanded UTF-8 MB4 character set (though, the way each device renders them is different, the underlying "code" is the same).

@Ryan Ashbrook, Yep, I got it. It is a unicode character like any other. However, we are seeing something funny here on our board. If we use the "native" emoji (e.g. entering it using a cellphone keyboard or copying and pasting it from here), the bad word filter replaces it. However, if we enter it from the emoji list (we are using the EmojiOne Style), it isn't replaced. See below.

Should I open a ticket?

It's iffy - if you're not using the OS native emoji, then it uses images instead.

@Gabriel Torres Do not be prejudiced! Let the guys use their little fingers like they want. Rs 😂

You can hide that image using css

img.ipsEmoji[src$="1f595.png"] {
	display: none;
}

Just curious, have you guys thought about hosting a discussion on the decorum of language in your sites?

Banning / filtering the middle finger emoji is just a quick and dirty solution, without addresing the root of the issue: the conduct of language and the attitudes of members on your site.  If someone feels the need to use the middle finger emoji, there's a reason for it.  The emoji is not the problem, it's the sympton, and simply hiding the emoji won't actually fix the real issues whether its anger, disrespect, or flippancy.

I know a discussion isn't the easy solution.  It's easier to simply ban the middle finger emoji but are you also going to ban the rolling eye emoji, unamused face emoji, or all the emojis that you later decide you don't like because they're disrespectful?  Moving the community forward requires a deeper, more long-lasting solution to cultivate a shared experience around community lingo and conduct.

@Joel R With 650k+ users in our community, it is simply impossible to please everyone. Think this way, if 0.1% of our users don't like our policies, rules, are trolls etcetera, we are still talking about 650 people.

Cheers.
