I'm just adding this here for anyone that sees this after so they know what I suggested IS correct and so is the guide. By default the Members group is what people are thrown into (aka the NEW group). The Validating group is basically Pre-Members. They are a member a unvalidated member in the Members group (What the old validating group used to be in the 3.0 days).
What Brandon suggested is required when you've created a completely separate group and want to change that to the new "default" group. As he said "3" or the "Members" group is the default group people are assigned to when they are first joined. This group should be your "new" group by default. Any promotions etc should be created from there.
So you change the Members to "New" and you create a new group called "Full Member" and you use the group promotions (whatever you want the criteria to be) to promote from the default group to the "Full member" group.
Basically you did it backwards. You created a new group and wanted that to be your "new members" group instead of editing the default group and creating a new group for your "full members".

Okay so IPS 101... the member group is default group. You can't get them out of it.
    Basically:
    Join:
    Pre-Member (not approved member)
    Member (Approved member)
If you don't want them in your base member group you need to enable admin approval.

IF you want something where they upgrade after X posts you need to create a secondary member group that is the "true members" group. That is promoted after X posts.

@Patrick Ewing what @SC36DC said mostly. But that's only if you use the promote. If you use the "share" feature its best to add an image in the first post (an uploaded not a linked image) as it will take the first uploaded image from the thread and use that in place of your sharer image in most instances.

You need to setup an htaccess for "Friendly urls". Search for "Friendly URLs" in the live search. Once you enable it you'll have to download the file there and upload it to your server.
This will get rid of the index.php

    What a genius idea!! I believe it's working 🙂
Thank you so much. Great little tip to fix this (versus going through 2500 pages of usernames to manually remove them). Thank you.

The activity stream (this includes the profile etc) is based off of the search index and when the content is archived it is removed from the search index.

It would be nice (and I understand complicated) if when you're tagging someone that the people that have replied to the thread get priority in the listing.
So if say I, Matt, Morgin Brandon, etc all posted in a thread when I type @m Myself, Matt and Morgin would should up first above the user "M" or other alphabetical options. Basically giving people that posted in the thread a little more weight and make them easier to find.

I prefer to use secondary groups as informational (for me) or permissive. Basically I just like to give people "more" things with secondary groups (especially since you can't take things away) @breatheheavy
For example I have a secondary group called "new people" that members are in for 1 week from the time they join. This shows them specific "new people" widgets/blocks to help get them integrated into the site. For example it links to our welcome guide, our welcome forum, etc. After a week, the group is removed and the blocks disappear too. (I think I remove the group if they post a lot too but don't quote me I have complicated group promotion rules). I also have a secondary group that I use to see how many of my members are inactive.
Alternatively, I use a secondary group to give access to special forums on my site.
Lastly, I have Post before register enabled but there are some things I didn't want guests to be able to post to that I did want new registered members to be able to post to. So I have a secondary group for new members that provides those permissions as a secondary group (to post to these things) where the main group does not have those.
So, I agree with @Joel R Keep it simple when it comes to groups or if you don't at least verify your permissions otherwise people may be able to see things that they shouldn't be able to see.

@fix3r It still works for me. It doesn't show until you select something on the next page though. But I've not had any issues with multi-select. A custom theme could be tooling with it though.

Morrigan got a reaction from Sheffielder in People getting email when they shouldn't
@Sheffielder this issue isn’t that the email is necessarily bad so much as notifications were turned off and the member is still getting notifications. Which the mail bouncer doesn’t account for.
Mail bouncer only checks if the email is bad and then removes emailing from the user until the email is updated.

Morrigan got a reaction from Viper V2 in Using Promote Group
I guess perhaps we're not on the same page here. I made an assumption and it appears to have been the wrong one.
When a user registers they are not fully registered until they are validated (meaning they have no real group until their account is validated) and they are put into the default members group (which I thought starting this, was your validation group like they join the site and you make sure their posts are okay or whatever). Promotion rules are intended to move groups or add/remove secondary groups based on the criteria.
If you need a group between Validating and full member you need your default members group to be that group and promote them out of that group into another group.

@Saurabh Jain There is currently no way to do this. It would be an interesting suggestion as I can see it as something that could be important.

    @SC36DC
It is in Icons and Logos:

Second option. If it's weirdly cropped then most likely its not sized correctly. I believe it needs to be a square and 512x512 minimum, suggested is 1024x1024 IIRC.

Morrigan got a reaction from Joy Rex in Can Users Who Can Hide Their Own Posts Unhide Them?
The only action that lets the user still see/edit their post is for it to be in an approval status. You'd have to get someone that could mod in the ability to unapprove the post. Only warning for that is that this will put it in your moderators queue for approval.
In my opinion the best thing to do is to educate your users on the true use of hiding a post. Advise them its a soft delete function.
For your users with the polls create a special forum (like a test forum) where they can only see their posts. Advise them to use that and when they are ready have a moderator move it to the correct forum where everyone can see it.
