Michael Parent Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Our forum is OVERRUN DAILY BY SPAM! DUE TO POOR SPAM OPTIONS IT TAKES AT LEAST AN HOUR A DAY TO REMOVE IT AND BAN THE SPAMMERS, ONLY FOR THE SAME TO HAPPEN HOURS LATER!!! 100 percent of the spam uses EAST ASIAN KANJI! WE ARE AN ENGLISH ONLY FORUM! ZERO PERCENT OF OUR REAL USERS USE KANJI. WHY CAN'T WE AUTO-DETECT USERS WHO POST MORE THAN ONE POST A MINUTE AFTER THEY REGISTER AND WHO CREATE POSTS USING NON LATIN CHARACTERS AND WHY CANT THE IPS SYSTEM BE SET UP TO BAN THEM AUTOMATICALLY?!? WHY CAN I NOT MARK AS SPAMMER AND HAVE ALL THEIR CONTENT HIDDEN IMMEDIATELY, THEN DELETED AUTOMATICALLY?!? WHY CAN I NOT ALSO AUTOBLOCK THEIR IP ADDRESS AT THE SAME TIME?!? THE SPAM HANDLING OF IPS IS TERRIBLE!!!!!

THE SPAM HANDLING OF IPS IS TERRIBLE!!!!! A few things: I have hundreds of IPs trying to spam my site via logins every day (as proved by Adriano Faria's free Login Logs app). I have yet to see a single instance of spam. This makes me wonder if you have set your spam and/or guest permissions correctly, Have you checked your posting options in the General tab of the adminCP Posting option? There you can set flood control options. Before you start slamming Invision irrationally because they don't provide you with your every wish right out of the box, consider submitting feedback for future options. stop E-YELLING. It does nothing to win people to your ideas.
opentype Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 I use this stock setting (among others) and so not a single spam post appears on my sites: P.S. Your caps lock key is broken. Yelling at us or IPS won’t help.

You come across a lot better in your video. I dare say that all the shouting in your post means that most people won't watch it though. Good luck to you in finding a solution. I haven't had a single spammer but I'm sure it'd drive me up the wall if I did too.
Fosters Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 We've had 0 Spam Topics and Posts since we developed https://invisioncommunity.com/files/file/8450-spam-prevention-suite/ 🙂
Aiwa Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 @Michael Parent you mean spam from users that put 90% of their posts in caps and an all caps topic title?
Cyrem Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Have you ever logged into your Admin panel? Serious question, because in your video you seem confused as to how to delete users, ban ip's, mass prune posts etc... all of which is done from the admin panel. It takes only seconds to deal manually with spam. But like everyone above, I very rarely get spam since IPS's spam service works so well, but you look like you're a victim of a specific (chinese?) spam bot. Why not try blocking Chinese traffic on your server and see how that affects things? (This is the better solution so you're not wasting your server resources on them)

(This is the better solution so you're not wasting your server resources on them) I believe I've seen the Chinese spam the OP was referring to on other (Invision) sites. This particular strain seems relatively recent. I also think it's important to remember that fighting spam is a constant battle - spam tactics will evolve over time, which means that anti-spam software and tactics will always be a work in progress.
Joel R Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Most of what you're asking about is covered in this video. IPS also has official help guides on spam settings.

I looked everywhere I can think of and see it nowhere, not in Spam prevention, and not in posting etc.
Nathan Explosion Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Edit a group, go to the Content tab....

Why not try blocking Chinese traffic on your server and see how that affects things? (This is the better solution so you're not wasting your server resources on them) Is there really a way to block traffic from specific countries? I'd rather not jump to such an extreme of course, just wondering. Yes, I have logged into my Admin Panel on many occasions. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to make it intuitive or conveniently designed, no matter how many times I log in or am forcebly redirected to a useless part of it. If I'm logged in with an account with Admin privileges, why do I need to waste time going to a specific control panel page to do critical things that could be easily accessed from any page that shows members or their content? I can flag them as a spammer from anywhere, why can't I set a checkbox to also purge their content and ban their IP address? If IPS is going to auto-force me to a new page after I do some things, why not bring me to an intelligible page that says "here are the people marked as spammers, do you want to ban their IP addresses and purge their content?" I do not like being brought to useless pages against my will because I clicked an option, only for that page I was forced to go to to not have a single feature I would want. Forcing me to click the back arrow and endure more loading time to get back to somewhere useful, only to have to endure tons more steps with loading time and un-requested redirects per spammer. Why can't I multi-select everyone I've flagged as a spammer and then purge their content all at once? Why is the "Spam Prevention" section half-empty, and yet many other directly Spam prevention related features all over the place under different and far more nondescript pages? I have a feeling if and when you ever have to actually use the spam pruning feature more than you currently do, you'll understand just how intuitive and time wasting they really are. It forces the kind of repetitive motion for long periods of time that leads to repetitive stress injuries and broken caps-locks keys.

ZERO PERCENT OF OUR REAL USERS USE KANJI While I can sympathize here, remember that some of our clients do, legitimately, post in East Asian languages and thus we can't blanket treat any Kanji (or similar) characters as spam inherently. For your situation, Fosters anti-spam application would probably be of help. As above, non-latin characters does not inherently = spam. That said, as has been pointed out, you can require all users in a group to submit to mandatory moderator approval of content, and then you can even automatically promote users in the group to a new group which does not require moderation after X number of approved posts. This is an easy step that helps to curb most spam (at least before it becomes publicly visible to end users without moderator permissions). WHY CAN I NOT ALSO AUTOBLOCK THEIR IP ADDRESS AT THE SAME TIME?!? You can automatically hide (or delete, it's up to you) content from spammers when you flag the user as a spammer. You configure this in the AdminCP under Members > Spam Prevention > Flagging Spammers (tab). This does not give you the option of banning their IP address, but frankly I wouldn't recommend banning a large number of IP addresses at the PHP application level anyways. If you feel an IP address ban is warranted, you can do so at the server level which will be far more efficient.
Steve Bullman Posted November 27, 2018 Posted November 27, 2018 Once you have taken the time to set it up properly I think you'll be more than happy with IPS's built in anti spam features. I basically get zero spam anymore unlike when I was on vb3.8. I don't use any of the additional anti-spam plug ins either
