Thank you very much. That seemed to work on my test installation.
I wonder though why IPS is not offering such functionality in the AdminCP? 🤔 Some button to remove orphaned language strings, or even better: Just remove them within the update process.

I run a SQL query that picks language strings from non-English packs:
select * from (SELECT lang_id, word_key, word_default, COUNT(word_key) FROM `core_sys_lang_words` GROUP BY word_key HAVING (COUNT(word_key) = 1) ) garbage where lang_id = 2 The query assumes you have two languages installed and the second language has an ID=2. Otherwise you have to adjust it. The output will contain the language strings that only exist in the language with ID=2. You can run DELETE query on the selection above or delete them manually through language center in AdminCP.

I do have a small observation or small critique on this; please don't take this the wrong way but it seems like this could be a big issue moving forward and I hope my voice will be heard here. I mean NO disrespect.
    ---
ACP -> Community -> Forums -> Settings -> disable "Moderation events between posts"
    ---
I feel this option should not be an 'On' or 'Off' option, but rather a "permission set" type of item or perhaps both one to turn it on and another to allow who can see these; allowing me to chose which groups can see it. I feel this particular item is a staff only sort of item and I wish there was a way to only allow my moderators or administrators to see this; guests have no reason to see moderated modifications to posts but staff does. While this option is awesome for staff use, it seems a bit misplaced allowing a visitor to see changes that moderators do.
Please don't take this to heart, I just feel it is a change that needs to be implemented having used the product a long time, love the staff, and company, it comes from a good heart and place.

With 4.5 we got those nice and shiny badges:

However there is not much we can do with these. No way to edit the icon (I know it can be done manually, I am talking about AdminCP options...), to way to change the inverval for how long a "recently joined" member is getting a badge, no option to display badges based on usergroups (not just if someone has moderator permissions) etc.
Also the "hand icon" for recently joined members has received quite some negative feedback. It is misinterpreted for restrictions being in place instead of a waving hand (what I suppose it should be taken for).
    Suggestions:
Please add a usergroup-based options: Display profile badge YES|NO (If YES, then 2nd option:) Edit profile badge: Background color (color picker) Icon Remove badge from moderator permissions (not needed anymore with the above option based on usergroups) For recently joined members, please add an option to choose for how many days the joined-recently-badge will be displayed.

I presume like many many others, I have a test/development copy installed on my local PC using xampp. Here I do all my testing and development of any changes to suit my live site first. I have this development/test environment for unit, system etc testing, I have a pre-production test environment on my live dedicated server for integration etc testing and then I have my live production environment. Nothing, I mean NO ADDONS, NO TEMPLATE CHANGES etc gets to a pre-prod environment until it is completely tested on my local PC first...this is the way I am sure even IPS do it. So why in hell can't I download and test addons etc in my development/test environment on my local PC...why has IPS stopped this with v4.5 especially when everyone is developing and testing v4.5:

It seems like as IPS progresses further it becomes even more frustrating to use...it seems along with other licensing things IPS is trying their hardest to drive people away from IPS and straight over to Xenforo who make it easy to create what you need and manage your installs.

MMXII reacted to Pavel Chernitsky in How about a built-in duplicate user detector?
As I said, we have experience with such a tool from when we were using VB, and of course it doesn't work on all cases, but most people, even the technical ones, slip up at least once and forget to delete the cache or cookies, and then they pop up on the radar.
Regarding IP vs cookies, ip is a complete no go. since here in Israel smartphone acceptance is extremely high (like 96% or something) and mobile data is very cheap and basically unlimited, pretty much 100% of our users log in from a mobile phone as well as a pc (if not exclusively). So IPs are all over the place. So the only viable option is a cookie (or some other method I'm not aware of). Since Israel isn't a part of the EU, we don't actually have to abide by the GDPR, but even when we will, I'm sure about how many people give that "we use cookies" message a second thought.
I mean of course, I'd love a 100% fail proof system, but I'm not a complete moron (contrary to what my wife says) and I'm fully aware that any system, no matter how smart and sophisticated, can be circumvented. And until someone figures out something perfect, I'll take what I can get.

I'm sorry, but that's just a ridiculous statement... firstly because I'm running an automotive community, secondly because I myself dabble in gaming a bit and know for a fact there are no more "gamer" trolls than any other random kind, and lastly because the tendency to troll has nothing to do with one's hobbies, and everything to do with their nature, mentality and upbringing.
Also, you don't have to agree with the need for anything, but dumbing it down to basically "It shouldn't be a core part because some admins are dumb and will ban family members using the same computer, and gamer trolls will find a way to bypass it" is actually pretty insulting to me. should we not have any way to enforce rules or laws just because some people find ways around them? Should we ban the selling of kitchen knives because a moron once stabbed himself in foot with it? that's a very simplistic and "turn the other cheek" kind of thinking if I'm being honest. I think admins should be given the maximum amount of tools to help them deal with "law breakers" and make their jobs at keeping the communities they are in charge with as much within the communities guidelines as possible.

I get what you're saying, that is an easy metric to look at, but I don't think it's the only - or even the best - one to consider.
firstly, because that plugin is fairly expensive as far as marketplace plugins go for small one-man-show communities, and for larger communities who have an in-house dev (or dev team), they'll just have them write a similar plugin that perfectly fits the community's needs. Secondly, I'd say there are a fair few admins who just don't think of that option, I haven't until we've installed it on the previous forum software we used...
Also, when I say "niche" I don't mean "small numbers" but "small role. If we're looking at it conceptually, a duplicate user detector is - as I see it - the basis for the community's entire rules/warning system, and you got to agree that's a pretty important chunk of the system (or of a community in general, virtual or IRL). When you don't have a way to enforce the "punishments" you've given, why give them at all?

MMXII got a reaction from Meddysong in translating word keys containing the word "in"
If you are referring to my statement: I was writing about improvements within the 4.x releases. Pluralization is great. The same goes for the possibility to swap positioning of %s placeholders. And you are correct that with 4.5 there are some improvements regarding language string handling.
But regarding translating the software, at least for me, the real problems lie somewhere else. Fractured language strings are just an example. Those cause so many problems: grammar-wise, reference-wise...
Two more have just been mentioned above:
Then there is the usage of "%s's". Sometimes changing it to "... of %s" does work. Usually it does not.
I am sure a flexible translation system is a huge undertaking. So all I am saying is that if there are plans to improve the system in a future release, talking to foreign language speakers in the first place will be very valuable to get feedback regarding much needed improvements.

It is a huge problem that many phrases consist of language string fragments. While this works in English, it is a serious problem for many other languages.
Sadly the translation section of the software has not seen many improvements in the past (and I highly doubt it will at all in the 4.x lifecycle). I hope that for version 5.x IPS talks to some foreign language speakers to get some feedback before a new translation system will be created.

When you get a notification it may be by Email and Notification center however if you navigate thru email and read it or just go to the content directly and read it the notification still remains un-read. When you read content something should update notification as read.
Also if you get notifications for pending approval of content if another mod/admin has already address the action then it should update that original notification as READ and append  "Matt Approved Post"

Banning, blocking and moderating problematic users is all well and good, but if the user decides to open a new account and the site's admins can't detect it as a duplicate, all those tools are pretty useless.
I saw that through the years there have been a few plugins developed by the community, but I think that this should be a built-in integral functionality of the suite. Also the plugins are currently not available for purchase so I'm salty 😄
What do you guys think? Should we have a built-in tool to help us find and intercept trolls and toxic users? Especially given how fairly simple is should be to implement (makes a cookie and then checks for it).

I wish that that it was possible to assign multiple categories to items.  This includes photos uploaded to a gallery, pages database items, and file downloads.  This would be similar to the way members can be parts of separate groups.
What's the benefit of allowing assignment of material to multiple categories?  I will use examples from my aviation related community.
Gallery - Someone uploads a picture that is a beautiful aerial shot of his Grob motorglider.  He'd like to have it listed in his album, Grob gallery, and aerial photography gallery.  To do that now, he'd have to upload it 3 times.
Pages & Files Database -- We have articles stored in a wiki format.  Someone posts an article about slow flight.  He'd like to have it listed in the safety and the training category.  He could upload it twice, but if someone corrects one copy or adds material to it, they diverge.
I think it would make the software more flexible and powerful.
Thanks for building a great tool.

So, the Ignore feature is extremely lacking in all of what should probably be essential functionality. Currently, by default, you can only ignore someone's: Forum Posts, Messages, Signatures, and Mentions. While that's great and all, it's an extremely simplistic view of an Ignore/Block function. All major platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc) have a way to Block and/or Ignore a user account. This hides all of that user's comments and contents and/or blocks them from viewing your content and profile. This is a major oversight in functionality that's missing in the IPS software. Not to mention that the Ignore function misses almost all of the other IPS default applications (Pages, Blogs, Gallery, Downloads, Calendar, Statuses, etc). The entire Ignore function feels like it was just slapped on to solve a singular issue (Forums) and never touched again. What an Ignore / Block function should be able to do:
Ignore all or some of a user's content. Block a user from contacting you (Blocking messages and mentions). Blocking a user from your profile and content. Most users prefer Ease of Use with this. If you're blocking someone, you (usually) have a good reason to. The current ignore feature on IPS is basically bare-bones and doesn't really do a great job at what it does. It can definitely be better, and hopefully this can start that.

Currently you have the ability to ignore someone's posts and ignore someone's personal conversations. I believe if you ignore someone in personal conversations, they can't send you one.

What I would like to see is a couple options to expand the ignore posting part.

    1) An option to forbid a user from posting in your topics.

    2) An option to either completely hide a post from view (as in no "This user has posted. Do you want to see it anyway?"), or make it much more condensed. The purpose of ignoring a particular user is that you get annoyed by their posts. But that annoyance still remains even if you can't see what they posted but know they posted in line with the rest of the posts. I know there has been some comments about this like "What if someone else was replying to this person and it caused confusion". Well in this case how about something near the top of the topic out of the line of posts that says "X posts hidden". I can see it, skip past it, and half-way forget about it when I start reading. Essentially don't give me a reason to click on "read it anyway" because if it's in line with the posts, I'm more likely to do so, thus making the ignore feature useless. The whole point of this is -- please make this not inline. It defeats the purpose of ignoring posts.
