I am an IP.noob (I am getting immense mileage out of that one) fresh from vBS. My site is a mid sized (1m post) site. I have just spent the last few hours with my mod team and we have come up with this list. Some are duplicates (yes, I read all 18 freaking pages), but all important to how my mods are used to working.

    - Soft delete. This is mega important to our site as it allows us to comment and undelete if needed. Also allows users to delete without us going "wha?". This isn't just for threads, but posts as well.

    - Reputation comments. This is missed right now. People LOVE to get thanked and know who did it. Maybe even an option to make it public so the + rep and comment could show in an activity stream and/or profile. That would be win.

    - Ajax quick reply. With how jaxed up IPB is, would have thought this would be a given. Saves a lot of bandwidth and time + IMO it creates a more user fluid environment. On that note, I do like how vB4's quick reply would pop up under the post you were replying to. That was a nice improvement in usability.

    - Delete as spam - this is a much missed option that allowed us to delete a thread inline, ban the spammer and delete all their other threads all in 1 go.

    - A 'whats new' portal page that will give you a snapshot in configurable blocks of whats new before focusing on specific areas of the site. I am kind of assuming this can be done with IP.Content, but haven't gotten a chance to try yet. This could also serve as a member home page. Maybe not configurable per user, but configurable via admin - that would be very hot.

    - A contact page? I sort of assumed there would be a contact us page. Didn't realise until reading this thread there wasn't

    - Easier way to view watched content

    - Easy way to manage a 'global' sidebar.

    - Swap between editors via ajax

    - Inline edit via ajax

    - When using the RTE editor, be able to select a block of text and use the list button to turn it into a list.

    - Another user mentioned a vB mod called 'Live topic'. That was very swish and popular. The idea made the forums (and other areas governed by comments) very interactive.

I saw a few other suggestions that I have had experience with so I thought I would share. Clearly this is only my opinion and what didn't work for me could work for 99.9% of other people. I just thought I would share my experience through running a fair sized board as well as working on a lot of other vB sites. Take it with a pinch salt.

    - Social Groups. We tried social groups and it just didn't work. At least don't use vB as an example as I honestly do not know of 1 vB site where social groups are a success. With some more thought I am sure they could have been made more prevalent in the community.

    - I have 6 moderators on my site. I don't think any of them have ever used the ModCP.

    - I don't know of many vB sites where tags have really worked well. Its one of those things that everyone wants, but no one really seems to use. In order for tags to be effective, they need to be used consistently. Forum users are not consistent with tag entry. There are mods on vB that helped with this, but then you end up with a lot of superfluous tags too.

Anyhooo - Hope this helps. I may be back with more as we play more :D

Put "View Today's Active Topics" back in a place where people can find it, got TONS of members who use the 24 hour, weekly, etc to browse through stuff, but have a helluva time finding that wimpy little link at the bottom of the forum index page.

It's been said over a dozen time by not only me but others as well, the unapprove function and trash can is simply not sufficient enough. IPB needs more robust moderation features and administrative control, neither the trash can and unapprove function gives us this necessary control over our community's content. If IPB really wants to compete with Vbulletin, then it needs to consider Vbulletin-esque features.

Even if the price of IPB is significantly lower than Vbulletin not many are going to go through the hassle of converting because of the following reason(s):

The Vbulletin core package already contains more features than IPB does, many Vbulletin users feel as if they are getting their moneys worth even if it means an increase in price. Why would they be compelled convert to a software that essentially offers less? With Vbulletin's more robust modification community of several free quality modifications make Vbulletin a more ideal choice for administrators ten-fold than IPB does. Most who already have the money are not the slightest concerned with the increased fees of Vbulletin, IPS needs be able to grab this specific market of potential VB-converts by offering more features in their core package than Vbulletin currently does or at least features on par with those in the Vbulletin core package. Note that I am referring to the core package and not addons such as the gallery, blog, download system, and IP.Content.

Also the warning system in IPB is very minimalistic and not as robust as the infraction/warning system in Vbulletin, the Vbulletin system allows for customization and more options than the IPB system does. Also the Rich Text Editor in IPB is very wonky, I find myself often banging my head because of issues with the RTE in IPB that are so much of an annoyance I've disabled the RTE editor for myself. I have none of these problems with the Vbulletin RTE, any problems I have with the Vbulletin RTE are minor and not as excessive as with the IPB RTE.

Please don't take offense to this, I am only offering suggestions for how IPS/IPB can improve their software. I would appreciate it if what I mentioned is considered, I have so much faith in IPB that I've already secured the future of my community as an IPB community with the purchases of the gallery, blog, download system addons, and IP.Content. :)

After looking at the demo, we bit on purchasing IPB two weeks ago. Our staff installed the application on a sandbox and within a week's time had determined that while IPB is a solid product, the core files do not suit our project. We inquired about a refund policy and were informed that there was none. We are now the proud owner of a $150 forum application that will likely never be used.

Double check, triple check and quadruple check everything before you purchase. There's no turning back.

On my IP.Board set up, I was able to login and change my display name shortly after I logged in with FB. But the option is pretty hidden and should be part of the 'Facebook Connect Options" but instead had to be accessed on the regular name change section:

    http://community.invisionpower.com/index.php?app=core&module=usercp&tab=core&area=displayname

Only problem here in the Invison forum, you need your password to change your display name and if you logged in with FB, there is no password or one is assinged based on the FB session so you probably cannot retrive it. On my installation, it didn't ask me for a pass since I had just signed in but when I look at the option after I logged off and back on, it needs my pass. I can, of course, over ride this in the ACP but you definitely don't want to do that for everyone that registers. I posted about this a while back but never got an answer so I guess untl they revise the FB options, we are probably going to have to find work arounds..

As for sharing a post, that feature is already on the Blogs so it shouldn't be all that hard to add to the forums. but for the mean time you can use something like 'Add This' button and edit the posting template.

It depends on how large a db file phpmyadmin will accept without timing out. ;) , your host may be willing to adjust this (I "think" its not actually the php.ini upload limit its set it my.ini although I'd have to check that)

Myself, if its over about 5mb I would not try it and wait ages for it to just timeout. :)

See my reply above (post 7) , I'd suggest using BigDump (although sometimes you can get some strange issues) if possible as its a good tool to use and very straightforward once you have used it once, its easy.

If I'm using localhost I just use the command line as its fast and always works. :)

    I use this link:

    Today's Active Content

Which in my opinion seems buried at the bottom of the main forum index. And not visible anywhere else as a link on other pages.
I'd rather have that at the top left in lieu of "View New Content" from what i can tell has many in uproar over the feature.

Once there it shows all the entries the tabs then displayed are

Help Files | Forums | Members | Blogs | Calendar | Gallery | Customer Resources | Community Downloads

Now if I perform a Quick Search the results page shows the order of the tabs as...

Forums | Members | Help Files | Blogs | Calendar | Gallery | Customer Resources | Community Downloads

    The tabs should remain consistent.

The results of the search presents a topic PREVIEW showing a few hundred characters surrounding the term supplied.

I want that PREVIEW showing the first few hundred characters from the topic/post for the link above.

Unfortunately team icons are board based and not skin based - crazy isn't it?

If you install some nice team icons, they show up in all of your installed skins, but they may not match the appearance of all those skins.

Imagine some nice Christmas skin themed team icons looking rather odd when viewed by someone who is using a non-Christmas skin, or white/bright team icons from a white/bright skin showing up automatically on a black skin.

So my suggestion is to make team icons a folder in the skin images.

Now its nightmare for admin to move each user from ACP. I would personally like to see those features in core IPB itself without any hooks or mod's.

Related topics are a good way for members to see if there are any topices relationg or any topices that might peak their intrests into posting to. This feature would be part of the Topic View.

I have also thought of Socual groups. this owuld be a way for members to create their own groups to talk about certin topics that would be something spsific.

Have to agree with my fellow IPB3 users here. The UCP could use some work. Takes me a bit, even now, to find settings to change. The last UCP was easy right out of the box.

Also, the comments section of the Profile/UCP. It could a reply-to link when someone leaves a comment that takes you directly to it's own discussion thread of sorts. If I'm not mistaken, vB has this. It's one of the few things I like about vB software.

Understood. But if you guys will publish the list before contacting author I personally feel its more good.

    Reason:
    1. I/we/all are thankful to that author but since his hook is giving problem we can disable it temporarily till author fixes it.

    2. For those who think or will think that those author sucks then they should quit because each software has bugs. Every single thing needs bug fixes.

I hope you guys can release the list because I am using 3.0.3 since their are 2 major issues in 3.0.4 and I am waiting badly for 3.0.5.

    Thanks. :)
