Think you can slim down the number of times you update this thing in a day? My inbox is taking a pounding.

I am trying to get he obsolete files to appear correctly on the rh panel of the download not as easy as it should be.

I had been using the Shoutbox ever since version 2.3.6, but it looks like that long legacy of using this application on my communtiy forums has come to an end as it led to incapicitating my forums. After noticing an error message being displayed at the top of my forums after the first to 1.3.8, I thought maybe there was an error in the installation so I removed the application, deleted the files I uploaded and re-uploaded the application in which the application completed disabled all access to my forums by displaying a massive error warning. I'm not going through the process again but it's obvious that there are problems with the application.

While my previous probelms stemmed from the shoutbox hook, before, I could just disable the hook and the application would be fine. But the latest version seems to have new changes in it that have created problems with my installation of the forum software. Bear in mind that I'm using IPB 3.3.4 with the most recent security patch.

I ran into a simiilar problem with the Shoutbox back when I was using IPB version 2.3.5, but that those errors were corrected with version 2.3.6. I was skeptical about installing this new version but it simply created a major headache for me, this time around.

Been there, and I am very sorry you are going through that frustration. I can only hope that you have an ample supply of database and directory backups, because once the errors from those shoutbox hooks start kicking in, it seems that permanent damage has occurrfed. I also hope you have not encountered the same severity of errors as I had with these hooks, but you can find out by trying to recache shoutbox_shouts or trying to edit posts and seeing if that gets rejected. If it's that bad that you can't do that, than you'll also find yourself unable to reinstall a new shoutbox. These hook errors approach malware status because you can't even delete all of your shoutbox-related tables and go for a clean install. The damage gets deeply embedded.

I personally have found a restore point deep enough that allowed me to sidestep this damage, and now everything is working fine. But I was really hoping that the premium shoutbox version could accomplish what these hooks were trying to do so we wouldn't have to worry about version compatibility nightmares ever again.

In any case where there are add-ons you should disable them before any major update that's pretty much a given. As far as I know v1.3.8 is stable a number of changes were made to start the app towards ipBoard v3.4 compatibility and to move it forward but the core system should not be causing issues. Remove all of the 'plugins', install v1.3.8 if it gives errors tell me where I can see them as I seem to keep saying I am not psychic just saying there is a problem will not get it advanced to a solution unless I can see and analyse the issue.

not sure how helpful this is, figured I would toss it out here.

I hosed a test board today, uploaded zip and used cpanel to extract.

was curious to see how it would act since there were some cpanel edge version updates recently and its been some time since I tested that.

its a test board so I didn't dig into it to see why, just clicked restore button (I love cpremote plugin for cpanel :) ) and 5 minutes later site back up.

can't say if it was extract error, over write error, anything really. just didn't care to dig into it.

site is ioncubed, nexus installed fine so don't think its ioncube issue.

so take that with grain of salt.

Thing is, I originally had the options disabled for the various hooks. What happened was this:

  • During the first time, I went to upgrade to the latest version of Shoutbox. This was when an error appeared at the top of the forum page with an error indicating a problem loading some javascript. After trying to figure this out, I had no success and so I opted to uninstall it and reinstall it. This resulted in an error message that prevented my forums from loading. Inistead, I got a black page with an error string at the very top of the displayed page. I'm sure many of us have experienced this "white screen of website death".
  • Then, I decided to delete all files pertaining to the Shoutbox application, deleting it wherever it had installed the files. After recaching my forums, repairing my forum database through my websites control panel, I then proceeded to reinstall it. I then got the same "white screen of website death" with that error message again.

I don't know if anyone else had experienced this but I opted to just remove the Shoutbox until a new version is released. I just prefered the previous working version where you didn't need to install anything special other than simply uploading the application files and running the upgrade process for that addon. I haven't been able to figure out this error ... maybe someone else has experienced this other than me.

Well, it's not allowing me to install any version of Shoutbox now. The error messages I get?

White Screen of Death (Board Index: Global Hook):

Fatal error: Call to a member function announcement() on a non-object in ../board/admin/applications_addon/other/shoutbox/sources/classes/library.php on line 388

White Screen of Death (Shoutbox Application Display Page):

Fatal error: Call to a member function no_mods() on a non-object in ../board/admin/applications_addon/other/shoutbox/sources/classes/library.php on line 227

The same error appears when I install it on either Shoutbox 1.3.7 or 1.3.8. It seems to be a problem with the Shoutbox application and not the forum installation.

I don't suppose swapping that library.php file for a new one would do it? Some hooks like to rewrite it (for the worse). What shoutbox-related hooks were you using that might have lead up to that?

Ummm playing version shuffle is likely to do very nasty things. Send me a PM with ftp/acp access and I will see if there is anything obvious.

REBUILD YOUR SKINS FROM XML and RECACHE.

Look & Feel->Template Tools.

This is not an error with the application, you obviously have the skin issue bug in my sig, and you need to, once AGAIN, like every other *single* person to have this issue to post in this massive topic, stop pointing finger at the app.

Marcher, thanks for the pointers. The reason I thought it might be an issue with the shoutbox was that the error notices directed to the "shotubox" source files. I'll post an update if that works ...

Marcher, it worked on installing 1.3.7 this time, with your trick. Thing is, there is no guide for troubleshooting Shoutbox on your own. Has anyone ever thought about producing a troubleshooting guide so that those of us who do have problems can consult with a sort of online guide before coming to this support topic regarding this application? It would definitely cut down on those of us who are posting on limited information provided to us by these error messages.

I understand what you're saying, but you can't blame the users of Shoutbox who are installing this who might have only limited basic understanding of installing these addons. Judging from your response, and while I respect the help that you've handed out in the past, it's kind of unfair to blame the users because they may not know how to fix the problem unless someone explains to them on how to fix it.

It doesn't have to be "step-by-step" but just a general explanation on how to fix "basic and common" installation errors regarding the Shoutbox. It would definitely eliminate the kind of "figure it out for yourself" kind of responses that seem to crop up, from time to time. Patience is a virtue ... lols

I hope you will not take this the wrong way but it will not hurt to do a little searching first before you complain about things like the lack of FAQ or putting the blame on the shoutbox when the reason for not working lies elsewhere.

Also, if you read through this topic you will see a lot of questions asked about things whose answers were provided only a few posts above. It looks like people just ask questions without bothering to do a little researching first. Another thing that I have noticed in this topic is the lack of appreciation. If you will look at the stats it is one of the most downloaded mod here with thousands of downloads and it has only 6 or so Likes. Not to mention the lack of saying a simple Thank you to the author for all his hard work and long hours put into this for free.

And then you and others go and complain that why the author is turning to paid support or releasing it as a paid product. I mean, c'mon, are you guys really so selfish as to expect others to work for free for you? I bet you yourself are not working for free either as you got bills to pay and most a family to support as well. Same things applies here too.

So ease up on the complaining and either open your wallets or a book about programming and start to learn how to do things yourself. Can not get easier than that.

I respectfully disagree o_O. I hated trying to learn PHP from a book.

My wallet is also basically empty right now, though there is a receipt in there. You can take that if you want.

Nena, I wasn't complaining. Marcher, while I respect his opinion, kind of kind of as a bit negative in his response instead of saying, "hey, check out this guide for troubleshooting Shoutbox" instead of the usual "I wish people would stop blaming the application for these problems". I don't make it a point to identify the negative aspect of a support question, I try to answer with the most appropriate and positive reply as I can.

There are bound to be users, clients and customers who don't understand all of the nuances behind installinig a plugin. Remember, the point in posting in this topic is to get answers to problems you may be experiencing. It's called "support" for a reason. I'm trying to sound negative on this but it's better to be helpful by giving anyone who comes to this topic the appropriate information on how to solve their problem.

When I posted my support question/feedback, I was going off the only information I had when I posted it. The error messages pointed to a "shoutbox" file/template bit. Since I know very little about coding, I wasn't aware that the installation could have been a simple "recaching" solution which worked for me. But, if someone had linked to the FAQ, that would have solved the majority of the problems I was experiencing.

I try to learn this stuff as I go along and it's always better to be helpful than unhelpful.

I think there are many other who would agree with me on this. This is, after all, a support topic and the main point is to help those of us who might have questions on how to fix the problems we experience with whatever plugin we're having trouble with when we post our difficulty with that plugin.

Hello,

I´m getting this error

Fatal error:
The file /home/xxxxxxx/xxxxxx/testdrive02/forums/admin/applications_addon/other/shoutbox/extensions/coreVariables.php was encoded with the PHP 5.3 ionCube Encoder and requires PHP 5.3 to be installed. in Unknown on line 0

Hello,

I´m getting this error

PHP version 5.2.17 is installed on our server.

It's because he has this script ioncube encoded, meaning you need ioncube decoded installed on your server in order to use it.

actually that is not entirely true .. yes it is ioncube encoded .. and most servers have this running by default .. the issue is its been encoded using php 5.3 and your running php 5.2 ... now I'm not saying you might not need to install ioncube on your server, as this may be the case as well, but you also need to upgrade to php 5.3

I am trying to work out a way to not use ionCube, really don't like the system all that much.

seems to me it could be an issue on shared hosts too where user has no real control.

Well we aren´t on a shared host but do not want to upgrade php just for the sb. We are are running several sites and didn´t have any probs with the installed version yet. Also some of these installs need ioncube - as well without any problems.

Thanks!

tons of open sec issues for 5.2.17 though, which is why its not supported anymore.

I didn't have any issues going from 5.2 to 5.3, I do have issues with 5.4 on some sites which is why I am stil on 5.3.x
