Would that be 4.5.5? Or would that be a 4.6 release?

How about doing patch releases on a regular schedule, such as on the first Tuesday of each month? That way, people can predict and plan for the work that will be needed (which for patch releases, with no new features or breaking changes, should be pretty minimal), and we get a reasonable cadence of bug fixes.
Features should be released in minor releases (4.6 etc). Personally, I would be happy to see more frequent but smaller feature releases, say every 6 months with a couple of changes each time, as long as the scope of a release is fairly clear (ie. there are no breaks in a patch release like 4.5.5) and it doesn't affect the cadence of bug fixes (so we're not waiting 1.5mo and counting for bug fixes).

This looks very similar to the great plugin Post Anonymously in Forums by @TSP.
One question, though: Will this feature make it possible to tell different anonymous members apart, like the plugin does, or will all anonymous posts in a topic look the same?

We're looking to find the right balance. Too many incremental releases (say weekly) and you push that burden onto admins to constantly update (and check compatibility, etc), too few and the release gets bigger.
It has to be enabled by an administrator.

Very pleased to know that small enhancements will be added in minor versions!

The only thing I ask is that this is not enabled by default (i.e. automatically active after the upgrade). Please set it to "off" by default and those who need it can be told how to switch it on.
This should have been done for various editing notifications in the 4.5 upgrade for example. Instead I had to go hunting to find out how to switch off things I never wanted on in the first place (and had set the previous incarnation to "off" before IPS switched them "on" again without permission).
I understand you wanting to demonstrate your coding, but these actions are not useful and sometimes even detrimental.
    Thanks!

Can this be enabled as a per club setting?
Can a content item be turned into an anonymous item?
Do posters of anonymous topic stay anonymous when replying? I can see some accidents happening if users are not careful.

    @Andy Millne When you say:
Does that mean completely de-anonymizing the author for everyone who reads the post? or just a momentary thing for the Mod/Admin clicking the option?
    Also ALL of that 👆👌

I am broadly in favour of moving away from monolithic releases, but I would much prefer that you up the cadence of minor releases than push features and especially breaking changes into patch/point releases.

We are trying to break away from large monolithic releases spaced 12-18 months apart which leaves long periods of time devoid of any significant new functionality.

In terms of demand for this feature, it's been requested a lot for our enterprise communities for quite some time.

If it won’t have an option to revert from anonymous to public, then a plugin will probably be released.

It's of course a framework feature which can be used in 3rd party applications.
We'll update the developer documentation once 4.5.5 is here and post instructions for theme designers with the breaking changes once ASAP, so that they're able to prepare their custom themes.

For this release we have focused on the search logging (and the UI to inspect those logs). We share your excitement about future possibilities - knowing what users are searching for will open up a lot of possibilities. We could show "trending" content based on recent searches, implement more intelligent auto-complete options for searches, all sorts of things. Baby steps though.
