Avoid it no matter how much your members cry about it. I found it very intrusive and buggy.

The ignore function is an extremely essential part of running community services such as Invision. However, I feel as if one of the most overlooked features is a fully functional Ignore and/or Block system. While we do have the current iteration of the Ignore function, it is severely lacking in some departments. The image below is (while themed) on a clean install:

This install has all of the Invision applications enabled (Forums, Blogs, Pages, Commerce, Downloads, Gallery). The above only references Posts (which many assume, and correctly, this refers to the Forums), Messages, and Mentions.
So how can this be improved? There's a number of ways, and a few other items I'd like to add.
    1. Add most community applications to the Ignore list. This would mean adding Downloads, Blogs, and Gallery items (very unlikely that the need to Ignore admin generated Commerce content would arise) to this list. If I want to Ignore someone's content, generally I want to ignore all of it, not just some.
    2. Extend the functionality of Ignore into a full on Block (perhaps as a user option). Most major community/social media platforms do this. Think Twitter, Facebook, etc., where when you Block a user, they cannot access your content (including your profile) either.
    3. Add admin options to force users to ignore each other. Currently this requires logging in as the user and adding to their ignore list. At least make this accessible in the admin panel, and have options to disallow the user(s) to un-ignore/unblock each other.
Numbers 2 and 3 here are major reasons why I moved one community off of Invision and onto a competitor and repurposed the license for another project that doesn't need this functionality yet (yet being the key term, of course). The question of "why these changes, specifically" arose in a conversation with my mod team for the community we moved away. Our main answer was: this lowers the amount of moderation work, and allows us to not need to use posting moderation and/or account suspension between users tossing barbs back and forth. We weren't a large community by any means (about 18,000 registered users), but even so these features were so asked for by the moderation team and users that it caused us to shift platforms. Hopefully something will be done with this feature set in the future.
    Cheers,
    Alex

I've got a new update ready that is just being tested a bit more by a few others and then will be released soon. (Because of the previous update causing problems, I'm a bit more cautious this release.)
These are the changes, if you've got any more bugs to report, please let me know now.
Bug fix for validate member. Bug fix with topic settings stopping new welcome alerts. Background queue to convert and then remove the legacy welcome member field. Only members who joined within 2 weeks will receive the time delay welcome.

Rikki just answered you and dealt with it extremely well by answering your question and did listen and explained why. One reason I've been with IPB for this many years is because of their open design instead of bunching everything too close. this isn't the 1990's.
Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it needs fixed. Obviously by Rikkis answer it's WAI.

Yes we do, and I think it's just fine and so do many many others.

Let's hope that the developer who produced the excellent post number plug-in for the previous version comes up with modifications which make it work in the new version.

Then we will have choice and everybody will be happy.

I don't see what problem Invision have with customer choice

Good points!  No disrespect to the devs...they are doing an awesome job!  But sometimes it is easy to over think stuff!  I have found that my members don't like to click and search for stuff...it is extra work now for them to look for the edit button or report button.  Sometimes visual clutter can be more efficient...LOL!

You are absolutely right to recognise that there is a diversity of users. As a forum administrator I definitely don't want to impose a way of doing things on our users. As far as I'm concerned they are entitled to make their own choices that we need Invision support behind us to allow this to happen.

I don't know about people being "hung up" about them. It's simply that some people find them useful – and others don't but it's their choice
This certainly seems to offer one solution – and we will probably try it. However, for ordinary people who aren't necessarily particularly computer-confident, they may find it a bit geeky and a simple plug-in to produce the post numbers would be very handy.

There was a plug-in available for the previous version of Invision. I'm hoping that somebody will produce a new one

I've shared these comments with our site team and some of the members on our forum.
The action has been incredulity and hilarity.

If you are really concerned about "visual noise" then what's wrong with putting the post number in the pop-up under the three dots . . .  with all of the rest of the moderator/editing options. That way you clear out this offensive and objectionable "visual noise" allowing the "post content to be the focus" and also you return a very useful function to people who want to refer quickly to information contained in a previous post in a very long thread.
Once again, surely it is reasonable to let the forum administrators decide how much "visual noise" should appear on each post. Surely it is up to forum administrators to decide how far to go in resolving the balance of interests in helping members to focus on post content.
Surely it is the forum administrators should be able to make these choices. Surely it is the job of Invision simply to provide options and not to make decisions for forum administrators.

In fact one of our members said:
and that's true. The problem of "bloat quoting" is already significant and it simply adds a great of length to an already very long thread and makes it much more time-consuming to get round.
Being able to refer to post numbers is simplicity itself and makes navigation of a thread much easier.

I suppose that if Invision went into the book publishing business we would be told that in future, books would not carry any page numbers or even chapter numbers because they were simply "visual noise" and it was important to let the page content be the focus.

    Bravo.

sorry guys, i haven't had much time lately. personal life things. My twin sister had an emergency surgery and was staying with her to help her out till her husband got home. I just got back to my home today (back to civilization, my sister lives in the buttcrack of the midwest, in a town that has more cows than people and i'm pretty sure the town's welcoming sign's population count was approaching negative). I should take pictures of where she lives, its insane how isolated you are, but her street looks like a suburban street, with lights, road signs, crosswalks, sidewalks, but her house is the only one there, the rest is all farmland. its pretty wild. anyway, her internet is from like 1998 and the fastest i was able to connect to at any time was about 1mbps, it took 12 minutes to load up a 4 minute 480p youtube video. so i'm back at my house, with my 1 gigabyte connection.
give me a few days and everything should be back on schedule with the 4.4 updates. @SJ77 if you are getting PM's, it means its detecting you using an alt account. if you want admins/moderators to be excluded, in the apps settings, just select which groups to be excluded. if you want individual members to be excluded, you can go to their member's form in the ACP and go to the duplicate members tab and tell it to exclude them. if you've already done those things, let me know, i'll check to see what the problem is.

I am not a fan of this activity stream either for many of the same reasons which have previously been stated. Just so I understand, from a programming standpoint, would it be a programming skull crusher for IPS to incorporate an option in the ACP to allow the client to use the old VNC style if we feel that is in the best interests of our site ? For example, Paypal will allow you the option to choose between new PP and classic PP. I think this type of option would make many of us very happy.

I have to say that my community doesn't like it either. I would purchase a plugin that restored the old functionality of the "View New Content" feature of IPS3. I think that Activity Streams is just too much of a radical change. Personally, it feels too much like RSS Feeds. One would think that with so many licensed users if IPS complaining about the same thing, that maybe enabling the previous feature, alongside with Activity Streams, that it would be a sort of compromise until communities can get used to the feature. I'm also bothered by the fact that IPS seems to be relying too much on AJAX and that just because a few communities like the feature doesn't mean that the IPS family at large enjoys.
I don't agree that it should be removed but I think that a compromise should be considered, adding VNC back into the software. Even creating such a VNC link doesn't do the same as the original VNC feature.
