Gill reacted to annadaa in the future of clubs or groups..
I find that we don't talk too much about the future of the groups and I have the impression that this party is a little neglected...
while it is surely one of the fundamental bases for making the site more interactive and bringing more attractiveness to a community.
This needs to be pushed a little more. have a group as if it were a school class, or a sports group... its own calendar with its events. the possibility of having interactive projects with clear monitoring of the stages what is accomplished what must not be accomplished.
The forums are a bit dead in the sense that before it was good in the evening to come and see the news discussions, write a message or a discussion.
but now few of them need to do it themselves because they absorb information every day.
But the forum is an excellent thing when it is used well and adapted to our times and needs.
It will then be possible to create small groups, because we are stronger together and have more motivation, and the monitoring of each person is better when it is small, because today people are tired and need help. to move towards a goal.
Then think about how to help a person (adult or child) develop to achieve a goal (succeed in a diploma or other) using the IPS tool (forum, individual messaging, calendar, groups, individual support, coaching, project management, gamification)
If we want to open a forum and wait for people to register to write messages or discussions.... it's more current on the majority of new communities I think.
We must provide interactivity, with events, projects, give confidence to the member, show them that they are considered...
We learn a lot through practice when the project is attractive and we absolutely want to succeed.
For example, this forum could have been used, I think, by many members to learn development by selling them training with a project for them to develop an application for their site.
no one wants to open a theoretical book to learn the code, but if we start with practice where we know where we are going it really makes us want to do it and give it our all.
It's dead those who think that they will continue to sell training for a long time with hundreds of videos to watch, manage yourself and if you have a question send me an email or write a message under the video. many have bought and do not do them and will no longer buy for not doing so.
the same for I think a forum in its future, just wanting a forum to give certain information in messages... it remains insufficient
we will have to find how to provide interactivity, gamification is good but we need to go much further I think...
the idea of the live topic is already a very beautiful thing in my opinion

Right Now if user want to create standalone poll (Use Topic Title as Poll Title without separate Topic Title  ) it create duplicate content as Follows

Because poll can't be created without filling out "Poll Title" and "Question Title" Fields

It would be great if user able to create polls without filling out "Poll Title" and "Question Title" Fields Then Polls could be shown as follows which will improve polls UI/UX

I Hope IPB Team will includes this improvement in upcoming IPB 5

    Hello !
In future releases, will it be possible to display .avif images directly in messages ?

At the moment, the .avif file is displayed as an attachment, even though the system saves it perfectly and my browser (obviously) supports this format.
I think that allowing this format in the Gallery application (as well as in the others, I haven't checked) would be a good thing.
    That'll be all! 😜

Hi IPB Team & Community ^_^
As images are essential part of forum topic it would be great if uploading of topic images and resizing would be more optimal
Right now it is quite hassle for first time user of website.

As admin or Moderator we all know how to upload image and resize but for first time user  it is quite unfriendly.

As user i have to first "choose files" then click on insert then i have to double click to resize it, if i just single click it do nothing as shown below.

Even if user able to figure out how to resize image, putting numerical value is kinda odd procedure

However if we see at other forum software they made this process very user friendly as follows
Simple "insert image" button on editor that show upload option

Automatic Blue resizing border around image once it is uploaded  that user can use to resize the images easily

if there is any way we could customize editor to make image upload and resizing as above please also let me know.

We hope IPB team will take note on this and make it more optimized.

    Thanks

You can control maximum images size to store and to display independently within the AdminCP.  I set mine to display the maximum of what I want for desktop display, and anything smaller just displays smaller whether it's a smaller uploaded file or natively gets sized down for mobile.
It would be cool however to allow click and drag resizing behavior for the embedded image, but I'm not sure of your use case for this unless you wanted to do some side by side display and the default AdminCP settings didn't allow for that due to being too large.  My sites generally use an image per line in Forum topics and members have been good with that.  Can't say anyone has ever asked about doing the resize you mention, but I can think of display cases where it would be useful.

Gill reacted to Dreadknux in Restrict Uploads of Certain File Types/Extensions to Certain Usergroups
I might be missing something in the AdminCP, but it would be great to have the option to allow certain usergroups to upload particular file types/extensions to the community.
At present, there's a global option in ACP to allow users in general to upload files (and further set which filetypes they can upload). I use this to forbid regular users from uploading non-video/image files (like .zip or .exe files). But I would like the option for only Administrators to be able to upload .zip files to Downloads app (and other areas of the site), and there doesn't seem to be a way for me to do that. I trust the zip files I upload for my community, but I don't trust regular users with the same.
Can this be something that is added to V5 perhaps? Or if it's already a thing, please let me know! 😄

When creating custom fields, the ability to select a specific database entry or forum post, better yet filtered by the specific forum, would be appreciated.
Use case: I have a staff application form (forms provided by third party plugin) where there is a field requesting a link to their membership application. This field is a URL field. Using regex, I can filter this field to only accept entries from the current domain, and even filter it down to just forum links in general, but there is no mechanism to allow the selection of a specific thread or post.

Gill reacted to opentype in Feature request: better control of bulk mails per time
There is already the BULK_MAILS_PER_CYCLE constant to solve issues with hosts that have trouble with many emails at once.
Equally, if not more important, is how many emails are sent in a given timeframe. It’s normal for hosts and email services to have some kind of limit in that regard, but with the way IPS sends out bulk mail, it unpredictable when these limits are being hit and there is no way around this problem when the limits are hit.
I suggest a solution like a MAX_MAIL_CYCLES_PER_TASK constant or setting to limit the amount of cycles run each time a cron is being fired. So, for example, I could set 1 run of 100 emails with the cron running every minute resulting in 1000 mails in 10 minutes.
I understand that IPS isn’t all that focussed on features that would only help self-hosted customers, but it seems like an easy implementation which could help a lot of users. It’s actually the behaviour that people are already expecting.

I think the built-in Lightbox view falls short in some situations. To enhance the user experience, I propose the adoption of PhotoSwipe, which is a free and feature-rich alternative.
PhotoSwipe provides users with fast and smooth transitions between images, offering a more interactive experience. Additionally, features like zooming and dragging allow users to examine images in more detail. This change will make the visual content on our website more appealing and user-friendly.
With the IC 5 update, could there be an evaluation of replacing the built-in Lightbox view with PhotoSwipe?
    License
It comes with an MIT license, allowing free usage for personal or commercial projects. For more information and to explore the details of PhotoSwipe, you can visit the PhotoSwipe Official Website.

The "file" is what you are seeing there in your screenshot. "custom.css" is the custom.css file. These are all "virtual" files as it really is just stored in a database but I used the word "file" to simply relate it to a regular instance most people are familiar with.
Both themes you named these as "custom.css" (or used the default provided CSS file). This is why your CSS is overwriting as it is intended. You would want to create a new CSS file (scroll down to the bottom -> click new -> CSS File). Then name it something you'd recognize when in the child theme, I suggested "parent" to be in the parent theme and "child" to be in the child so you understand.
There is no need to include the CSS. Theme's CSS are automatically included on all pages.

Our community is REALLY enjoying the club feature. We have 15 and will launch more in the future. The list of clubs is now getting...long and a little confusing for our members to search through.
We have a few informal categories of clubs that we use and it would be amazing to be able to logically group those club categories in some way on the front of the club page...or even create separate top level pages for each category of club.

Gill reacted to WebCMS in Cross-posting of Articles into forums as topics, automatically
Cross-posting of articles as forum topics functionality currently has some issues -
The entire article body along with a link to the original article is cross-posted into topic (the link to article will show the exact same full body content). Cross-posting the entire article body may get penalties from search engines for duplicated content. It is perfectly fine to post a link+snippet to another content in SEO terms. The content in the forum topic can also go out of sync if the original article is modified which is not graceful. A new option may be provided to post just an excerpt/snippet OR the full article body (current default) along with the link to the article. If possible, the link may be embedded in the topic so it will include an excerpt in the embedded box.
If the article is posted by the Admin, it gets cross-posted as a forum topic automatically by the Admin user but the same Admin user is not able to edit the cross-posted forum topic (to convert its posted body content into an embedded link to the article). Cross-posted forum topic can only be edited if the original article was posted by a mod/user. However, this behavior of editability is inconsistent as it seems to be using some caching as it shows the Edit menu item at times but not always. Even if a user posted the article that got cross-posted to a forum as a topic, neither the user nor the admin are able edit the forum topic at times (but again, it works sometimes).
Currently, it can cross-post every article to only "one" specified forum which is not optimal. The article posting form should have a Forum dropdown option to select to which forum the article should be cross-posted into. If the optional forum to cross-post is not chosen on the Article form, it should preferably not get cross-posted (this approach makes the cross-posting option dynamic per-article and the forum to cross-post setting at Articles level in ACP obsolete). Alternatively, if the forum to cross-post the article into is not chosen (in the optional forum dropdown on the Article form), it should cross-post to the default forum set in the Articles in ACP. TIA

Google claims to not penalize duplicate content on a site but regardless, it can still hurt your SEO practices. The problem lies in the fact that IPS places a <link rel="canonical" ...../"  /> tag (which directs a search engine that this is the master copy) on both the page and the topic. You can easily see this by viewing the page source of both the page and topic. It should be line 171. You shouldn't have a canonical tag on both pages claiming to be the master.

I have reported this previously but never followed up on it by placing the topic in the Feedback sub.

I read the title as 3.4.6 at first. I've recently done 2 upgrades from 3.4.6 and 3.4.9. 😅

IPS doesn't provide older versions for download, so you can only upgrade directly to 4.7.14.
The steps mentioned in the post above are all you need. However, remember that you can't use the automatic upgrade option in ACP in this particular instance because you need to change the PHP version.
The only option is to perform a manual upgrade. Here's a link to the guide: https://invisioncommunity.com/4guides/advanced-options/server-management/install-and-upgrade-r259/#manualupgrade
