I remember a Brandon saying a few months ago that he had customized the warn system for TWOP and in the future he'd like to expand upon what is offered by default in IPB. IMO the Warn System should be the primary medium for discipline for my community. In its current state, I feel as though it is fairly useless -- essentially a notepad that each user may or may not choose to view. What are some of your suggestions for the warn system?

How about when a warning is issued, forcing the user to acknowledge it before proceeding with any further activity on the board? Sure, you could send the user a PM via the warn panel, however that is fairly cumbersome and not connected to the actual warning whatsoever.

I don't remember how else Brandon said he customized TWOP's warn system, however I'd curious to hear what improvements others think could be made to the warn system.

Obviously. But that's not what I was asking, so your post isn't particularly helpful.

Thanks, I'll have to dig through old forum posts to see if I can find the original discussion(s) about this.

Perhaps instead of automatically sending the person to an answering service, a recording could come online every minute saying to the effect of being able to continue holding or to press 8675309 if they would prefer to be forwarded to an answering service so that they can stop being on hold on the phone but have their call returned if necessary.

Brett B reacted to AtariAge in Suggeston: Way to jump to "Full Editor" for PM popup
Would it be possible to add a button to the PM popup that takes you to the "Full Editor"? I needed to send someone a file via PM, so initially I clicked on the "Send PM" icon under their name in a topic. That brings up the popup, of course. So I cancel, go to the user's profile and then click that same button. Same thing. Arrgh! So I then had to go into the messenger, copy their username and then start a message that way. It would have been much easier if there was a "Use Full Editor" or some similar button on the PM popup (similar to what you see when editing a post).

    Thanks,

    ..Al

Sometimes the error messages thrown by IPB can be a little bit abrupt and not very user friendly. Particularly those that involve viewing permissions. Perhaps these could be made to be a bit more helpful to the end user in a future version? For example instead of the current "[#103139] You do not have permission to view this forum." how about offering up some reasons as to why this might be the case. e.g "not logged in" followed by links to register or log in. etc.

Something that vB has that IPB doesn't.. "Smart" marking of read topics. If you read a topic that has new posts but you don't read the last page of the topic, then it's still marked as unread (because really, you have unread posts in that topic). If you happen to start reading the topic (say the first of 5 pages) and your first unread marker is in page 3, then it'll take you to that first unread post on page 3. If you go to page 3 and then look at the topic list again, I believe it'll take you to the first post on page 4 (since you didn't look at it or the last page yet). Basically only marks all the posts read that you might have actually read, instead of the entire topic.

People complained because the text wrapped on the breadcrumbs.

The search should be in the tab bar, and the functions should be put back up with the logo, I think.

Ideally I think if at all possible the error messages displayed should be changed to reflect the fact that Performance Mode is enabled, not just that the user doesn't have permission.

In the meantime, there is inline help throughout the majority of the ACP that answers questions about each individual page. I'd urge you to make use of it, as I think it will help you with most of the new stuff.

The detailed PDF was done by a third party, as I recall. I am not positive when an updated copy will be available.

Brandon D got it to export last night. But there are problems with some of it that I need to go through. I'm hopeful I can get things cleaned up and maybe have a copy of the phpdocs up next week, or the week after.

I've been around here for a very long time. I've been watching IPS evolve as a company for even longer.

I have to say I am very impressed with the way things have turned out over the years. You guys make occasional mistakes, but they are honest mistakes and you resolve them quickly. You don't take shortcuts and you have the good practice to be fair and polite to your customers no matter what. You have shown yourselves to be the kind of company I will stand behind.

Matt & Charles (and the rest of the contributing staff) you guys have made something really great here. I know sometimes managing a business can be demanding and stressful. I also know that it's alot easier to manage if you know what you are doing matters to others. Well, I'm telling you your software has made life easier for myself and many others, it matters to us!

No one knows what the future holds, but I can guarantee if you keep to your honest business practices customers like myself won't let anything happen to IPS. Not even if the whole world falls to this economic recession.

    Sincerely,
    Aaron

Brett B reacted to TrixieTang in Quick PM should have a "Use Full Editor" link
Currently if you go to someone's profile and try to send them a PM, if you decide you need all the editor options you don't have them, and there isn't a way to get to them short of copying what you typed so far, going to your messenger, typing in the name of the member, and pasting what you had written...

There really needs to be a link on the "Quick PM" popup like their is on the fast reply, "Use Full Editor" which keeps what you'd written, who you're sending it to, and takes you to your messenger to send a PM with access to all the editor options.

Will there be some way for it to be able to deal with false reports? Say someone goes to a bunch of sites I'm a member at and reports me as a spammer on those sites. Will the system be able to detect that that's bogus?

I've been using IPB since the 2.0 days. In this time, I've had about 3 or 4 different licenses, and I've had my current one since 2.3.

The last time I had to actually use IPS's support was in the 2.3.0-2.3.4 phase, because...well, we all know how many bugs 2.3.0 had . Apparently, I've forgotten what it's like. Of course, with 3.0 and its immaturity, more issues have come up, and I've needed to submit a few tickets since then. Most recently were two I sent in yesterday, one about registrations not working and the other about a problem with the language files.

I figured I'd have to wait until Monday, at least, with it being the weekend, and was fine with that. An hour or so ago, my phone vibrated, and it was the ticket response e-mail. Both of my problems were resolved within an hour of that. What's more, I had typed the ACP password wrong, so they didn't actually have what they needed. They were still able to solve the problems within an hour or so. And it's 3AM EST.

In short: The support is (still) amazing, and I am very pleased. :)
