Honestly, the process was fantastic, and the discussions were numerous. While IPS does want the CIC product to be their primary product, they see the value in being the best self-hosted product on the market as well.
But as they've said for a while, the self-hosted market is changing.  Sites that are "just forums" are not likely to survive long going forward, which is a position I've held for years back when I added IP.Content/Pages as the article management system on my site.  As such, it doesn't make sense to keep the apps as individual products anymore and instead sell the suite as a whole.  It allows IPS to integrate the apps even tighter. 
In my view, site owners who run "just a forum" need to sit back and reflect on where the world is today and if such a site makes sense to continue self-host, or just migrate it to Reddit instead. If you are a "just forums" site owner, I would encourage you to look at this change as a chance to grow in new ways with the new apps that you didn't have access to before.  The only limit is your imagination.
IPS published several drafts of the upgrade language to us in the group and we all took turns making suggestions and modifying the language.  While IPS certainly set the guidelines, it was a very collaborative effort between IPS and those of us in the customer focus group. I think every person in the focus group submitted a modification suggestion to IPS and IPS was very receptive towards them. 
With regard to how the licensing changes work, especially regarding renewals, it's clear that in order to make sure the self-hosted product is a viable, ongoing product, people who use the software need to chip in. The pool of self-hosted customers has shrunk dramatically over the last years. Making the renewals and catch up fees mandatory was the only way to do that in a fair manner but IPS counters that with lower renewal fees for any site with 2 or more apps.
My relationship with IPS over the last 20-ish years has been strained from time to time, but I have to say that this has been a fantastic experience for me personally.

Yes, I understand. I was just venting here (sorry) to see if I'm the only one with this issue or if everyone goes through this app review process. 
I just received a new email from them saying that they were able to access the platform (same email as before). These seem like a bunch of semi-automated emails Let's hope this was just a glitch in their systems.

I’ve tried both and messed around with several different flows. This is the fastest way for me. It aligns with other industry standards for project development as well and I can spin up a dev environment in a few key strokes. Not to mention I’ll configure it to the dev container spec as well so it can be used in any dev environment including remote. 

To stop people's fear and hopefully stop the private message questions:

1. Yes, this application is going to be ported to v5. I'm not sure yet if all the features will work or if some will have to be removed but to stop the fear => YES, it's going to be available for v5
2. More important: Everybody who purchased this for v4, will also gain access to the v5 version as long as the purchase hasn't expired AKA you'll not need to purchase it again, but you'll probably have to pay the renewal price.

Unfortunately our Zapier integration doesn’t support custom fields yet, but you could use the Zapier Webhook feature to send a POST request to your community’s REST API to update the created member.

I have that option for years through a third-party solution. Get ready to be insulted. 😉 People who leave a community in anger (e.g. after moderator actions) will love the opportunity vent their anger one last time, blaming and insulting you. I can’t remember a single time a text-based option to give reasons to delete an account was actually useful. If anything, I would suggest a checkbox list with admin-defined options.

That's already happening once the "Hide content submitted already" or "Delete content submitted already" option is enabled

Like show images from a gallery album in the topic or pages database record sidebar or header, link to records or downloads files from a topic (which will show the featured image in the sidebar)
 
It's coded way too limited for my own needs, I may release it for v5 because it's going to require a complete rewrite then.

The reference is only stored in the cms_custom_database_x database tables inside the record_topicid field.
