  1. This would be like taking a jack hammer to crack a nut as opposed to a simple 'reinstall' link. I wouldn't want to take my site offline, download my database, uninstall the app, reinstall the app and then overwrite the database, make sure all was OK and then put my site back online. Hitting reinstall to overwrite potentially corrupted files (not necessarily the database) would be so much simpler 🙂 You do now, that's exactly what I had to do with my theme. I contacted the author, he didn't know what the issue could be - puzzled he was. I did the only other thing I could think of, uninstall, and reinstall - that fixed it.
  2. The only thing I would ask is to be able to reinstall an app without having to delete it first and thereby losing all of the data associated with the app. This ability to reinstall could be for a multitude of reasons, but mostly if something untoward happens and the app files are corrupted. At present this is not possible, so the ability to 'reinstall' over the top of the existing installation to correct any mishaps, errors or corruption would be a boon. This is what we were able to do when we had a hard copy of the app files. So, I would put this forward as a suggestion to @Charles @Lindy @Matt @bfarber as a future update to the marketplace. I'm bringing this to the attention of staff, because recently one of my themes was throwing a wobbler and would not allow me to save block positions or to access a database in Pages. My only resolution to this was to uninstall the theme and reinstall it, losing all of my customisations. It wasn't something fatal to me, but it was a damned inconvenience to have to go in and redo all those changes. A simple reinstall would have solved the issue. So, under Installed have a link to reinstall. This would save a lot of heartache 🙂

Unfortunately, that's the way the API draws the data from TMDB and there's nothing that can be done. When a movie is added, the first language is always required and if the submitter adds it as Chinese, Spanish, German or whatever then the API will draw that data into the app. The upside is that the Invision system allows us to change that in the title, but that's down to the Invision app and not the API. Sometimes it takes a while to get to grips with what the API can draw and the limitations it imposes. I've looked at the API info on the TMDB site and it's less than clear to the uninitiated. However, when you delve deeper into it, certain things become clearer over time - it's getting your mindset into what developers see and not we, as end users, see it and that's not always easy lol. I would just ignore it, as I'm sure your users will - the uptick is that if you have Chinese visitors and users, they will be very pleased to see the title in its original language 🙂
  4. Some simple steps to try if you haven't already tried them: 1) Check all permissions for groups 2) Check all permissions for the apps 3) Run the support tool to clear the cache 4) File a ticket with support if all the above do not help Without more information it becomes difficult to track down 🙂

When I hit that little niggle I found out that despite your language choice, TMDB always asks for the language that a movie is created in first when it's added to their database. To overcome this search for your movie and when you 'Add this movie' (you must add first) you can manually change the title into English or any other language that you use. I get this a lot with martial arts movies, but it's easily remedied 🙂
  6. Looking back over the replies to this topic you appear to have purchased another version from the developer's own site, if that is the case then why are you posting here about it? You should be posting on the developer's site and, as he has said, he works on the default theme, which most developers do, and by using a third-party theme any issues you have will be with the theme. I've highlighted in bold the above portion of the quoted reply from the developer. What more do you want? Absolutely not the case - I am attempting to discover what your gripe is and what you expect to achieve by posting what you have posted. It's been stated over and over that you cannot achieve your expectations by continually posting the same issue you have already outlined because the answers will always be the same. The app will be updated when it's updated, period. Any issues you are having with your third-party theme should be addressed to the theme developer. Having said that if the issues are CSS based, then I am more than happy to help you resolve them, but I will need a link to your site where the issue is displayed.
  7. I believe that most people do understand that you're not disagreeing with what the responses are to your situation, but you don't seem to appreciate that there is nothing you can do and there is nothing to be gained by continuing with this line of response. There's nothing you can do, nothing Invision can do and nothing that anyone else can do. So rather than keep rehashing your disappointment and asking other developers what their stance is, just accept that the developer of this app has said it will be updated as and when time permits. Just let it go and be patient or look elsewhere to fulfil your needs.
  8. The version I have is the last one released which is not compatible with 4.5 and is the version of Invision I am running. As this was a one-time purchase with no renewals, I cannot say that I have not had my money's worth of use from the product. If you purchased this product just prior to updating to 4.5 then I can understand your disappointment, but there was no indication that it was compatible with 4.5 or that it would be updated so, there were two things you could have done: 1) hold off updating to 4.5 until the app was compatible, or 2) do without the use of the app if you were intent on updating to 4.5 knowing that the app was not compatible and wait for an update.. There's no obligation on any developer to update an app to work on the latest version of Invision. Is it disappointing? Indeed, it is, but then life is filled with such disappointments. The good news is that the developer has said he will update this app, but has given no indication of when, just that it will be updated. Even with that indication, if it proves too troublesome then there is still no obligation for the developer to make good on what he said. I understand you're not after a refund, just a version that works with 4.5 so your only option is to either wait or look elsewhere.
  9. Expectation, like anticipation, quite often leads to disappointment. The only real expectation is that the product works for the version of Invision you are using, bugs aside. The new method of submitting apps/plugins to the Invision marketplace has been upped in terms of what is expected from the developer; for some, this has caused delays in apps/plugins being updated. You can view this as being both good and bad. The good is that your expectation of an app/plugin working is heightened, the bad is that you may have to wait longer for an app/plugin to be updated or brace yourself for the disappointment of an app/plugin being either delayed or abandoned. Many things can change in a developer's life, just as it can in yours, on a personal level; extra responsibility at work, ill-health, the arrival of a newborn, or even just a change of interests; all of these can influence expectations. I do agree that if a developer is to abandon an app/plugin, it would be the moral thing to advise his/her clients of such an event, but sometimes people just drift away; that is a human failing. I would look for an alternative, or ask for a developer to undertake custom work on your behalf if this app is essential to your site, but the Jackal has said it will be updated, so there is hope 🙂
  10. How can they when it's the developer's product? It's up to the developer whether they update or not, or even continue with any kind of development. I know this is not what you want to hear, but that's the way it is. If the developer decides to drop a product, paid or not, then that's the developer's choice not Invisons. That's the price we pay, in more ways than one, when we become dependent on 3rd party apps 🙂
  11. I don't believe it's a question of adapting, rather one of acceptance. The only way to adapt is to rebuild the software from the bottom up aimed at mobile users, it then becomes something likened to other SM outlets aimed at those who prefer and use mobiles. I would hang my hat on wanting to use something other than IPS if my target audience was mobile users - the IPS software is useable on mobiles, but it's not the software that is in question, rather it's the content and how it's displayed. It often makes it unwieldy for mobile users and a generation that's not really interested in learning something new or understanding concepts beyond the puerile. It's a shame, but that's the world we live in now.
  12. If the IPS software is not fulfilling your needs then you need to explore elsewhere - IPS is a community suite, it's not FB or Twitter and heaven forbid it ever turns into that, we don't need any more clones; there are clones out there so if IPS is not a good fit for you try them, just do a Google search for FB/Twitter clones. I doubt that the development team for IPS will move closer to the likes of FB and Twitter and become another version of them. I do believe that the IPS team have their finger on the pulse, as it were, but they can only do so much to leverage a closeness to FB/Twitter and they have done so quite succinctly over the last few upgrades. The instant gratification that people crave is not in articles; I would quickly lose interest in an article if I had to read it on a mobile phone. Likes, thumbs up/down, smiley's and the like are all they want. Serious users will use forums or other such websites where reading on a larger screen is much more comfortable. What I do, in order to reduce clicks/taps, is to send a link to a post/article to Twitter (I don't use FB and never will) and that will take users to that specific point with no further clicks and when they get there the post is short enough to hold their attention span 🙂
  13. I don't believe that today's users don't have the time - they have as much time now as they did in 2000. The differences between then and now are threefold; 1) Most users now rely on mobile phones for Internet access, this makes it difficult to enjoy the full-on effect of a forum platform. 2) The Internet is dominated by the likes of Facebook and Twitter which are wholly mobile phone friendly. 3) People are lazier today and want instant gratification and can't be bothered (not that they don't have the time) to work through a system of menus. IPS is never going to be able to fully compete with FB and Twitter et-al, when their system is not really suited to mobile phone use - it is useable, but people are lazy and lack the motives to use the menu systems - which are very easy to use when it all comes down to it. It's sad, because the very people that IPS customers want to attract are missing out on so much because they can't be bothered to navigate a menu system. So, the question is whether it's IPS or people that are at fault. My money is on people. Sure, there is more than can be done to streamline 'some' areas, but it is what it is, and you can't make a square peg fit into a round hole (unless you take to brute force lol). This is really a circular argument because there is no quantifiable answer to the people problem. In order for IPS to mitigate the people problem, they would have to completely redesign their software and it would no longer be a community suite, rather it would be more of a FB or Twitter clone and another like that would be one too many. The simple answer would be not to use IPS if it doesn't fulfill your needs. 🙂
  14. I believe you need to measure the responses you are seeing on your forum; for example, are you seeing an increase in disrespectful responses in your content areas? If you are, then use the tools you have, to rein in the offenders. If not, then your idea becomes a moot point as it negates the need for such a tool. I understand where you are coming from, but if this is because of a few members not following the rules, why think of putting such a block to posting into place rather than just dealing with minority offenders? For example, let's assume you have this check box in place, and someone decides to ignore the 'kindness' aspect and post a really nasty response to someone else's comment or post. What would you do? Warn the offender? Ban him/her? Penalise them in some way? Do you see the redundancy of this application? You would need to use the tools that are already at hand. Just look at what is currently available, report post, warning system, reactions, post moderation - and some I can't think of right now. You just need to remind people that they are guests on your site and should follow whatever rules or guidelines you put in place. If they don't want to play by your rules kick them out. 🙂
  15. There will be some CSS with specific fonts assigned to an element - if you use the browser console to discover these you will find the elements affected and you can change the CSS to whatever font you want and add it to your custom CSS file. An example would be on this site - your user name, as below: The font can be changed using: .ipsType_break { word-wrap: break-word; word-break: break-word; font-family: "tahoma"; } And makes it into this: You can drill this right down to a specific element on a specific page if you find the right combination of elements to group. The trick is not to allow one change to affect other elements, which can happen if you're not careful. Playing with CSS can be both fun and frustrating, but have a go 🙂
  16. Therein lies your problem. 'you think it would enhance your forum' - have you asked your members what they think of this solution towards politeness? After all, asking on here is one thing and you have had your responses from a few who have taken the time to respond, but what about your members? They are the ones who are going to have to live with this if you are able to implement it. I believe their feedback would be more valuable to you than any on here. As for this idea to stop people in their tracks and make them think before they post, it has the potential to stifle their desire to respond; emotions and passion are essential to good debate, these elements are what 'make people think' - this doesn't mean they have to be offensive, that's what your rules are there for, to remind them what is and isn't permissible. If anyone steps over the line, then you and your moderators are there to step in and do the job you're there for. You have an inbuilt warning system, use that instead of penalising the many for the transgressions of the few. Personally, if this was implemented in the core and it was not optional, I would go elsewhere for my community software. I would not impose this on my members, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, it's your site, your forum, you do as you think best, but this is definitely not for the core, ask a developer to make this plugin/app for you, but I really would ask your members first if they believe this to be a good idea. Do a poll, so they don't even have to say what they think 🙂
  17. I reckon you are looking to create a Utopian type site where all negativity is banned regardless of whether it's warranted or not. It akin to "I like your point of view, as long as it's my view too". Good debate is rarely polite or kind, the essence of rationalised negativity promotes thought and often refers people to re-evaluate their stance in whatever the debate is about. If you remove that element, then you will just have a site full of sheep with no room for the occasional bad egg and everyone who has a different point of view will be barred from asserting their views. I doubt that I would appreciate being a member of such as site and this opinion would most likely see me being penalised as it could be viewed as being unkind 😉 On the process of asking for such a plugin, this topic would be better placed in the Marketplace Customisation Requests forum. This not something I believe would sit well in the core whether it was optional or not; there are more imaginative ideas for core features.
  18. @SC36DC sent you a PM 🙂
  19. Remove the requirement to review when someone just wants to rate. People are more likely to rate if they are not required to review but will not write a review just so they can rate. This is for the pages app - or anywhere else where rating takes place that requires anything other than just giving a rating. I managed to negate this, but had to jump through hoops to do it, whereas as simple option in the settings would negate the need to do this. My members can now rate without having to review. With thanks
  20. You've kind of lost me here - if members have to agree that a comment is kind before it's posted, how can they do that if the comment hasn't been posted for them to see whether it's kind or not - fuzzy? Unless you mean that the member posting the comment has to agree that what they are posting is kind before they can post it; if so, then they could do that whether they believe it to be kind or not just to get it posted. Different people can have dissimilar views as to what they believe to be kind. I would say let them post what they want and let the members decide by their reactions or comments whether they believe a post is kind or not. Seems like you're aiming to make a lot of work for your community and yourself. However, it's your site, your forum you do as you think best, but I doubt if anyone will make a plugin for this, unless they do so for the hell of it and make it free 🙂
  21. Why not add a reaction to symbolise the 'kindness' of people - that's what the reactions are for, basically to gauge someone's reaction 🙂

Agreed the template is nice - just waiting for any clean up @Jimi Wikman performs to see how things change. One question to ask Jimi - the rating circle, is that your own rating or is it the rating taken from TMDB? If it's your own, is there a way in your template that it could be pulled from TMDB? I reckon you could work well with @Adriano Faria in terms of styling. Great work @Adriano Faria for making such a sweet app and to @Jimi Wikman for doing some restyling for those of us who like movies and want to share with others 🙂
  23. That's great I hope he has a solution for you - that 'more' button is a real pain lol. Let me know how you get on 🙂
  24. How strange, usually when something works in the browser console it works when added to the custom CSS file; the 'important' part ensures that those commands take precedence over any other commands that would counteract them. I had the same issues in my own site when I used these apps and managed to correct everything that was wrong. The only other way that I can help you is to have admin access to your site and I'll go in and sort it for you, but that's something you have to decide if you want me to do that. There are several template edits that need to be done to get rid of that 'more' button, I know I hated it as it looks ugly. Let me know via PM if you want me to sort this for you, I'm always happy to help 🙂
  25. Remove all the previous commands and add all of these. It's been a while since I had to do this but I remember that there were quite a few commands to add and some template changes and since the introduction of the core app things have changed again, but all of the below works fine in the browser console so should work in real time when added 🙂 .threadStarterMoreContainer { background: #f7fafc !important; } .threadStarterMoreSmall { background-color: #f7fafc !important; } .threadStarterMoreSmall:before { background: none !important; } End result is this: More button clicked:
