Hi there. I am a newbie with web administration and such, and need some help optimizing my site if at all possible. I have VPS from Dreamhost guaranteed at 1410 MB. I dont have a ton of traffic, and am running into issues every once and a while with a slow site, or a 500 internal server error. Dreamhost tells me it is because I am reaching the max clients? They have told me: Your total RAM is displayed in the chart, it's the orange line that peaks to about 800MB. Though what is not displayed is your total max clients allowed for you Apache service and the value is linked to how much memory you have allowed your server. Your server is currently set to 1410MB and in…

so I am looking around at tuning sql, this is my.cnf on CPANEL server (centos 6.2 64bit) located in /etc [mysqld] # safe-show-database log-slow-queries max_connections=500 default-storage-engine=MyISAM innodb_file_per_table=1 lol seems a bit bare. I should be able to drop those max connections right?

My current server uses an AMD Phenom II 3.20ghz X4 840 Processor. I have been told that this is a desktop processor. I am considering moving onto a server that uses an Intel i7 2.67ghz. Is this a server processor? My site gets 500+ online members daily, I notice a decrease in ghz but I have been told that it will handle my site better as it is a better processor. I know literally nothing about this so can anyone confirm that it is a better option?

Hi - How complicated is it to change from a hosting service to a dedicated server? We have all kinds of different installations for our website: static pages, 4images, joomla, phplist, ip board, wordpress ... The proposed new server has sent us a migration document but just so nervous ... Don't want to crash our website! Thanks, Brian

Hi :) i have a problem, whenever i turn new user activation through email the reload page after i press "Register" takes for ever to reload and say that administrator needs you to activate account through email. On the other hand when i turn that option off it works just fine. I own a VPS and i configured it my self, is there a posiable chance that i reconfigured something and now sending the activation email takes for ever because of that? If yes than please help.

Well, it's more complicated than that, but I can't come up with a good title. So. This past Sunday, our forum at http://asoiaf.westeros.org/ received unprecedented levels of traffic thanks to the latest episode of the TV show based on the novels our site is about. Big, big load. And for the most part, our set up -- lighttpd+php-fpm, with Varnish set up for guests -- handled it okay. Note the server also hosts a popular Mediawiki which draws more visitors than the forum does. But after Sunday... things got weird. I'm going to quote our valiant server host and admin: So... any ideas as to what might have happened to start leading to this memory-chewing problem? I'…

We suffered a major crash without a conscise all-in-one-place backup, and had to rebuild a new server from scratch. In the process, we upgraded to the latest stable production versions of PHP and MySQL. Here's a heads up to folks in similar situations. The latest MySQL msi installer defaults to UTF8 charsets and collations, which causes an "illegal mix of collations" error when IPB attempts to display post content. When building from scratch, make sure MySQL builds its install with the connection/collation default to latin1/latin1_swedish_ci. If you don't, all is not lost, you can launch the reconfigure wizard to change it, as long as you've loaded the backed up datab…

Since I upgraded from IP.Board 2 to IP.Board 3 my page load times have significantly increased. Average page load time in Google Webmaster Tools went from 1.5-2 seconds to 6 (and rising). In Google Analytics the increase wasn't that bad, but still noticeable. It seems like the page is reasonably fast most of the time (Page Load Time <.3s according to the footer) but sometimes it stalls for several seconds. I already had APC installed to try and improve the situation a bit, but so far it does not appear to have done much good. Unfortunately I don't have root access to the server, so it's hard to run any proper diagnostics. I did manage to obtain some data though - s…

Hi everybody, I'd like to move to a dedicated platform, given that the mutualized / shared server my board is on cannot host us any longer, because of a too important traffic. There are several offers I looked up to, but I do not really know whether these servers will be enough to fit to my board. That is why I came here, hoping that maybe some of you could help me with that! Here are some of the main statistics of my board : - 18k members - 973k posts - Max 1k members online / 15 minutes (usually 200-600) And here are the offers that I'm interested in (these pages show the main informations about each server) : - Deewiojfsfx SC : http://www.online.net/serveur-d…

Hello, we were recently hacked by the following: http://forums.oscommerce.com/topic/345957-evalbase64-decode-hack/ as we us invision boards as our source CMS but we use WP for the frontend of the site. My system adminstrator was curious what security and permissions items should be have in place to insure that we don't have this issue again. We have put in a ticket to invision as well as we are looking for documentation on security for invision. Thanks

I did the "locate php.ini" command and there was a list in different location, so I tired to edit this one: /usr/lib64/kloxophp/zend/etc/php.ini I changed the max upload limit allowed to 5M and now my forum isn't loading. It seems like php isn't working at all. Is there anything I can do to correct this? EDIT: This is the output after I ran this command: [root@server ~]# php --ini PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/modules/curl.so' - /usr/lib/php/modules/curl.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0 Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php/modules…

Hey guys, So we got hacked the other day. Actually, it was just a member who somehow got an admins password, and went in ACP and started deleting members. So I restored the members table from the backup from the previous night. Everything is fine now except the server is being weird. Right after I restored the backup table, the server load was going over 50 and causing the site to be inaccessible for 10-15 minutes out of every hour. Since then, our tech support company has made tweaks to MySQL, and the server load averages from 2-5 (it used to be 0.2 to 0.7 before the incident), occasionally going over 5 and making the community inaccessible due to the ACP settin…

this weekend i have been playing with Zabbix for do some stats/monitoring...to be honest its kinda harsh in the GUI are, but very powerfull, so after playing a bit i made this simple template to also monitor IPB along with CPU/HD/SQL... it has 3 stats: new topics, threads and members, and one graph for those stats, i had not setup any triggers, but its very easy, a good use for triggers is to have an alert if there are no new members or posts in X time Template: UserParameters (in IPB server agent config file) UserParameter=ipbGA.posts, echo 'SELECT COUNT(*) from DDBB.PREFIX_posts where post_date > UNIX_TIMESTAMP( ) -3600;'| mysql -s -r -uUSER -pPasswD Use…

I've been having some problems with the my forum lately (slow loading times, server services failing (spamd specifically)) so I was going through this forum looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot this.
