Keep saying I am going to rewatch this and never get around to it. Maybe on Monday I will 😄

Jim M reacted to Meddysong in Team Talk: Show us your workstation
It lacks the orderliness of everybody else's, I feel, but it's my attempt to look modern: two monitors with a laptop docked to them, etc. But yeah ... cables everywhere, shoved off to the side where they won't get in the way. And try not to notice that the main monitor is millimetres too tall for its location when connected to its own stand, so I've had to knock up a fairly rubbish wooden frame for it and wedge it in there. At least I have lighting, though! (It's a strip light, Matt, for added points!)

Jim M reacted to Meddysong in Team Talk: How did you first come across Invision Community?
Ha! Mine is the same story from the same time, @Jim M! My familiarity with those boards as a user until around 2007 was enough for me to know that I wanted to find a reason to use that same software myself one day. I got started when 3.4.x was around but held off on doing anything once I'd seen a blog about i18n from Mark for the forthcoming 4.x; my board needed to have two languages and this looked to be perfect. I've had tonnes of fun tweaking the CSS and templates; it's been a really good learning tool.

Jim M got a reaction from MeMaBlue in 7 ways to nurture new members and encourage more participation
For the t-shirts, we have our own. We have 2 different versions so we've given away 1 of each and have done that twice in the last year or so that we've had them.
The calendar is ours as well. It's a user-driven contest as well which generates it's own traffic. It's a pain and a lot of validating to ensure the photos are fit and legal to print but is worth it. Depending on sales of the calendar itself we will give a couple away in the new year. We have been doing this for quite some time and they love it.
Finally, we have vendors on our community that will contribute with free items. A t-shirt here, a coffee mug there or we'll get a free/discounted product to give away. These aren't branded for us but we'll throw in a "thank you" note with the item.
Overall, maybe 2-4 contests like this per year depending on what product we have and how things are going. Try not to over saturate it and keep the excitement.

Contests are actually a very affordable way to bribe people. I do this on my personal community. A calendar, a shirt, whatever it is can be cheap and gets them in the door/posting. People love a chance to win free stuff! Just need to ensure once you have your audience in you capitalize.

Jim M got a reaction from Matt in Team Talk: What is the geekiest thing you do in your spare time?
Mine is, showing it's age and I would not use it for any other means than having fun and letting off some steam.

And... here I am with 2. But! I also have a drum set, an alto saxophone and a Bb clarinet. Maybe I should have contributed to this article.

Jim M got a reaction from Mark H in QOTW: Let's talk about music
Forgot to respond this week and probably the biggest question for me as of late. Love music but Classic Rock is my favorite. Tom Petty is by far my favorite artist, RIP my friend. Tom's music for me is one that I can listen to album to album without skipping a song and often do while I work.

Jim M reacted to Ryan Ashbrook in QOTW: Name the one thing you cannot live without
Interestingly, I had a difficult time answering this one (which is why I didn’t actually answer), but as a musician I’m kind of ashamed I didn’t think of this lol
But yes, definitely music is a very important aspect of my life, and I can’t imagine day to day without it. It’s such an important aspect of my day to day, and something that just comes naturally, I often forget it’s there!

Jim M reacted to Ryan Ashbrook in QOTW: What was your first computing memory?
Number Crunchers was my jam back in grade school.

Actually that's a real cake that @Stuart Silvester's wife made for us for the release of 4.0.0.
