Sadly, it will also mean some developers will simply not bother continuing. This was perhaps supposed to be something easy enough to do on the side for them. They are not interested in making life more complex for themselves nor interested in starting their own webshops.
I can already see some devs abandoning things even now...

Marketplace was really good option to find everything in one spot. Now i need to register on 20 different sites and half I don't even remember. 
It's like Apple telling to it's customer, here take iPhone. You want apps? Go on developers site and install from their. Jeez, what a nightmare. 
Take care of your health. Rest everything will go on. 
PS I am one of the customers who is unhappy because support/ticket system is gone and have to deal with broken donation system in store. 

It is really starting to become more effort than it is worth. Not to mention costlier still. Useful feature after useful feature that makes a community a community slowly gets taken away eg chat and marketplace. So what is the point? Great for corporations sure.
 
What are the best modern alternatives to IPS now? Any that support easy conversions?

sounds weird to me, App store, Google play store, Wordpress plugins depository, it makes sense to find all apps / plugins at the same place, rather than to have to check all devs websites...

I've been using IPB since 2006 with the MSSQL driver.   I was always attracted to the flexibility of the platform with minimal programming.
Recently tech support has become more difficult.  It's harder to find code examples and removing the marketplace killed a creativity source for me.   I had a stroke a few years ago, so my development skills are retarded, but still I believe this is one of the poorer organized forms in regards to technical documentation.
A wiki, kept up to date by your community, would really help in development IMHO.

It will be more incentive still to move away from Invision and will likely dissuade new users looking to easily,  cheaply and rapidly implement Invision with some customized functions.
 
Now you'll need to pay out of ear for custom development and be held in by the very limited devs experienced with this platform.
 
You'll also need to verify them yourself, somehow and you'll need accounts on countless sites to even try to facilitate those modules, coming from all different devs.

That include no check of the sourcecode by an expert team. So malicious code can be added in it. 
It was the reason for me to purchase content only on invision marketplace. 

I like the IPS 5 alpha preview, but IPS is here at this state also with all devs who worked for 3rd plugins/app.

Has this been done yet?  Critically important feature.  

You guys should try listening to what your customers are actually asking for!

Any chance to select by application in the future? (eg forums, pages, gallery, blogs). :)
