Kfir got a reaction from Split in IP.Board 3.1 Suggestions Thread
Now that version 3.0.2 is released with the Spam Monitoring Service, and CCS and IP.Subscriptions final are just around the corner, I'm guessing that you already got some resources to put for the sake of the next major IP.Board release (3.1).

So here are my top suggestions for the next major IP.Board release (Sorted by my own priority. Ease of implementing is considered as well):
    1. Improve multi-language support (also for RTL languages!!)
Since these 2 features are already implemented in the beta stage I put them as a top priority features request:
    2. Bring back the recently activity feature (from beta).
    3. Bring back the AJAX search (from beta).
    4. Better addo-ons integration with IP.Board.
    5. Show who repped the post.
    6. Show who repped the user (reps history such as display name history feature in user profile page) + who the user has repped (also fulfills this feature request: http://forums.invisi..._fromsearch__1)
    7. Quick ban in mini profile (have some suggestions if needed).
    8. Quick check box to qoute a post with the multi-quote button in the fast reply feature (like in vBulletin). A screeshot added:
    9. Quick sort listing function (like in vBulletin). A screenshot added:
    10. Let the user to see his own unaprroved posts same as the admin sees it.
    11. Tags System.
    12. Split the AJAX windows, and also fixes the problem of the X button being placed in the wrong side. A mockup added:
    13. And last but not least, add the CleanCut skin, fixed for all add-ons (if not already planned for a 3.0.X release).

Support me if you think these features are needed.

Also post your requests if you have any.

I like this idea. Avatars are the visual representation of the user. I find it inconsistent to sometimes see an avatar and sometimes see a picture.

Making 'date of birth' / 'birthday' an optional or required profile field on registration.

We are finding that many of our newest members since we converted do not have their birthday in the profile, and there is no way to give them a reminder to add it when registering.

A thing that would be very easy to realise is the member list to sort it by reputation points.
It would be great to have a list who is the "best". ;)

That is a stupid thing to do. Staff shouldn't have the ability to delete content from the board.

Kfir reacted to Elanor in Translation of default and selfmade Profile Fields
At this point, profile fields are not listed in translation menu. I guess that's because board admins can alter and add as much as they like. In the front end of the board however, this means that people choose a language, but when entering a profile, everything is in english (and there are many people in this world that do not speak english well enough to understand everything).

Off course Board Admins can translate these fields into the native language of their board, but then English people using the english language will be confronted with that native language. Translating therefor is only an option if you translate a board in your native language and only use one language throughout the entire board.

There is an option to add new profile fields, but that means new columns in database will be created, because one part uses english profile fields to enter data and the other users de fields of other languages. This makes it difficult to query data, cause same type data is spread in the database over various columns.

Then there is the possibility of altering the profile fields zo contents will be in both languages. That's an option for boards with few languages, but with more than 2 languages, profile field names will contain so much text that filling in a profile is not appealing to new users.

It would be nice if this important part of forums (after all it all starts with registration and creating a profile) would be in the translation bits.
It can start out with the primary profile fields, with the contents in english, that come with the installation. When translating through ACP it at least minimizes the need for entering custom profile fields with same data as the ones in english. That would allready be a big help for many I guess.

But above that it would be great if a feature was created that offered "instant" translation options when adding a custom profile field, like when you create a new custom profile field, you do so in default language, but after creating, you'll be offered a screen saying:
"You've added a custom profile field. We've located # other languages on your board, please fill in the language bits for each language" offering a list of boardlanguages, with empty strings for each profile field entry, (like in translation part of ACP). In that case adding a field means you add it in all available languages.
Don't know if thats possible, but I guess it would be a wonderfull solution for all foreign customers with a multi-language board. If this feature should be created, I'll do my part by translating the default profile fields in my native language, dutch.

Perhaps others, reading this topic, can give their opinion about this suggestion, maybe even improve the suggestion with other, more usefull ideas.

One more thing to add, though I'm not sure it'll help you any. As technology progresses, you'll find you simply need more resources to stay up to date. It's how computers and software work, I'm afraid.

2.0 uses more resources than 1.3
2.1 uses more resources than 2.0
2.3 uses more resources than 2.1
3.0 uses more resources than 2.3

Windows ME used more resources than Windows 98
Windows 2000 used more resources than NT/ME/98
Windows XP uses more resources than Win2K
Windows Vista uses more resources than Windows XP

Unfortunately you simply can't progress and add all the gee-whiz bells and whistles everyone wants without some sort of tradeoff in resource usage. I'm positive we could make IPB 3 just as efficient as IPB 2.3.....if we were working with the exact same feature set. i.e. get rid of friendly urls, get rid of the report center, get rid of personal conversations, get rid of the new skin. But then we'd be on 2.3, wouldn't we?

I'm afraid we don't have the resources to do that sort of thing. When a fix is simple we sometimes post a patch. When it's not so simple, it would be an extreme waste of our time to try to post instructions for every patch and then have our support department have access to every patch. Further to that, the patches have not yet undergone QA testing, so it's possible they could break other things.

While I'm sure when you are affected by an issue you want it fixed as soon as possible, we have to stick to some sort of organization that will benefit all of our customers in the most efficient manner. Fixing reported issues and then releasing an update to address those issues is pretty much the norm in this industry.

Sometimes the error messages thrown by IPB can be a little bit abrupt and not very user friendly. Particularly those that involve viewing permissions. Perhaps these could be made to be a bit more helpful to the end user in a future version? For example instead of the current "[#103139] You do not have permission to view this forum." how about offering up some reasons as to why this might be the case. e.g "not logged in" followed by links to register or log in. etc.
