Meddysong reacted to opentype in Proud to Present: An interview with Invision Community President Charles Warner
That’s a rather misleading claim at best. Just because some people manage to get something like a certain version of a certain Adobe app (for example) running on a certain Linux distribution with Wine + third-party scripts and command-line actions, doesn’t mean that this matches in any way what millions of users can rely on with a permanent official support for an app on Windows or Mac OS. And funnily enough, we could have the same discussion about community software. My oldest site once ran with phpBB and MediaWiki, both free and open source. But I still deliberately chose to “upgrade” to a proprietary subscription-based product called Invision Community, because a product being “free, open source and almost as good paid competitors” isn’t necessarily my main concern. I knew what I did when I chose IPS and I know what I did when I chose my desktop operating system. It’s fine that you are happy with Linux, but just because we don’t share your passion doesn’t mean that we are too “set in our ways” or just don’t know enough about Linux. But that’s exactly the picture you are trying to paint here. And I find it somewhat annoying (since you assert false things about our knowledge and motivations) and it might even be counter-productive, when it’s this kind of “preaching” with questionable claims (such as “everything can be installed on Linux”.).

I generally appreciate the thoughtfulness the development team has placed into coming up with this new feature. I am honestly looking forward to 4.6 and the many improved enhancement. 😎

I'm disappointed that there was no deadline presented, jair101's request about what it was went unanswered, and now applications aren't being accepted. I suspect that I'm not the only person who would've worked on putting together a CV over the holidays instead of starting it this past weekend had it been made clear that applications would be closing today. A notification of some kind (announcement, comment, edit within the article...) that there was one day remaining to get applications in would've been helpful compared to just closing applications.
Perhaps you might consider welcoming applications again for a period of, say, two days to give those other people who were taking the same break over the holidays that IPS staff were a chance to apply too. Had we left it too late knowing what the deadline was, then that would be on us, of course, but a total lack of notice does seem unfair, and might have cost IPS some worthwhile candidates. Opening them up again for a short, named period at least means that a failure to submit is clearly the fault of the applicant rather than partially of the firm for not stating it not only in the first place but also when asked subsequently by an interested party.

There’s something in the pipeline for this.. 😉
I can’t promise that it will be interesting for everybody, but there were some huge improvements in the background which should make it easier.

Meddysong reacted to Adriano Faria in 4.5: Language System Updates
We (those who make/update translations) need a tool that can tell us which new language bits was added between versions so we can update our translations easily and faster.
The UNTRANSLATED filter isn't practical in this case because there are hundred of language bits that I (and a lot of people here) didn't translate (like countries, emoticons, etc) and they are there so it's a "false" positive in this case.

This will go an awfully long way to making life a bit simpler for those of us with multilingual communities. Thank you for investing time into helping us.

These changes are welcome but you guys have a lot more work ahead of you to make significant improvements to localization of IPS. 🙂 Perhaps in IPS 5..

Meddysong reacted to Ehren in 4.5: ACP Dark Mode
The theme system simply isn't built to support automatic light/dark colour schemes yet. It would likely require a complete rebuild of the entire frontend theme, which is far too much of an undertaking for a smaller update such as 4.5. With that said, it's simple enough to offer your visitors a choice of light and dark themes which they can select using the "Theme" menu at the bottom of your site. 🙂

Next time anybody suggests that the Invision Community team doesn't listen, send them to this article. There's so much here that I've seen people bring up over the past year. What an amazing product. You lovely, lovely people.

Meddysong got a reaction from Matt in Why I try and avoid the F word in public
I'm in just that situation now. New site about to launch and the menu is ready to go. Yes, I have Articles, Resources and even a Community item. But what to call the item under that last heading which points to the Forums app? In the absence of anything better, it's reading Forums. It's bothering me but I can't think of anything else, so it's staying, at least for now.

Helen and I recently had this discussion for her new site too. In the end we went with the old school forums. Everything else seemed wishy-washy. There is still a "community" but forums is a focussed part of that and I think it lends a seriousness to the section. Memes are fine and still posted but we don't want to lose the serious long-lasting discussion, Facebook can keep the noise. It's tempting to move with the latest fads and terminology but ultimately it's all about the content and if it is valuable to your users. The terminology is secondary.

Thanks for the kind words! That's how it should be. Let us research and work on the tools, like SEO and you just focus on running your community. A perfect partnership!

Meddysong reacted to Davyc in The incredible power of anonymity when growing your community
Top notch statement of facts regarding privacy and anonymity on forums vs social media platforms. This is one of the issues that I promote to people when they consider joining; THEY are in control of what is and is not seen.
This is why I prefer forums to any other kind of social interaction between people; the opportunities of flexibility are almost endless with forums, whereas social media is rigid and contrived.
I believe that this is an important and relevant statement in a world where privacy almost often comes with a price, but not on forums; it's been there since day one and remains today - it's a shame that more people out there do not realise and appreciate this simple fact.
Great article and one which I will happily link to and promote from my own site. Thanks Matt, job done!

Meddysong got a reaction from Ramsesx in Team Talk: Where in the world would you like to live?
This is all quite topical for us because we've just passed one year of a five-year plan to get our affairs in order such that we can move to the hills of Slovenia. We need to feel that we'in the middle of nowhere and the fact that Slovenia is a mini Europe (Alpine mountains, lakes, coast on the Adriatic) means that we can always drive to a "holiday destination". And it snows in winter, which is perfect!
This is the house we saw which made us think "let's do it!" OK, it will have sold by the time we're ready to move but it's more than whetted the appetite! Look at all that isolation!
We did a bit more searching on a holiday last summer between Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia and realised that property on the Croatian side of the border seems ridiculously cheap. Since my better half is already very good at Croatian (she watches Croatian comedies and laughs at all the right parts), we may revise the plan and go to the north of Croatia instead.
We're on course with all the goals we've set ourselves to make it possible. The one important thing is that I need to have a job where I can work remotely once we go there, since she'll be giving up work after 20 years of stress, so if you're looking to expand the support team ... 😉
