We posted a blog entry about this recently. Basically, RC1 can be considered "safe" to use in that your forum won't implode or anything :) but there could still be some bugs.

You could always wait a few days after we post RC1 to see if there are any reports of major bugs or problems and evaluate from there.

I've been waiting for quite a while for the final release, like everyone here as. My forum members have been expecting an upgrade for sometime now. My original plan was to just wait for the final version to release, but because it has already taken so long, an urgency has hit.

I'm thinking I am going to go ahead and upgrade my live forum with the RC1

Is that just stupid on my end? Or will it be alright. I'm fine with having a couple errors. I just want to be sure that I will be able to upgrade the RC's up until the final is released, and also be assured that there won't be a large error that wouldn't allow for me to do that...

    Any help is appreciated!

Thanks guys, go nuts and test it out as much as you can. Please don't be alarmed if we seem to take a minor step back with some stuff, I've fiddled with a few things, mostly:

Topic Marking CSS Caching Memory Debugging So let me know if you see anything odd with any of that.

I'll be honest, I am one of the ones upset with having to wait. But, I'd rather pay $150 for something that WORKS and WORKS WELL than something that doesn't.

I haven't beta tested since Beta 2, I didn't renew my support license because I figured I'd wait until IPB 3 is released, because, let's say I bought it in Feb, and IPB 3 wasn't released until October, that'd be a waste of $25, since I don't really use IPS' support too much.

So, while I'm upset, I'll be glad when 3 finally comes out, it'll work a LOT better and faster than it does now, and will hopefully be much better than 2.3.6, so thanks IPS, for all the hard work! :D

@ Lee, as far as I was told, its $25 regardless of when you renew, you're not forced to renew at the end of those 6 months, and I don't think it'd be fair to have to pay for something when you already bought it (IPB is owned, even after your 6 months is up, you're allowed to use the latest release infinately, but no future releases without renewing. vB does the leased option)

I'm not a beta-tester but merely a customer waiting for the upgrade of the product i'm subscribing to and still paying for. I'm a 'buy the finished product consumer' and leave the programming and testing to the actual people who work and get payed at IPB to make it happen. I don't think it's up to me or any other consumer to do IPB's work and feel my questioning of IPB's delays are valid, at least from my consumer perspective.

If those of you who have the time and gladly help IPB with testing that's fine, but i don't think the beta-testers are some sort of measure of the general consumers needs and expectations for this product. There are simply many of us who want IPB to do the work and hand over the finished product without ever knowing or contributing to the testing procedures. That's what we pay IPB for.

    I'm not a beta-tester and simply patiently wait for the 3.0 Final. I thought the beta would reach a maximum for 3 betas but no.. it seems to keep going on and on without an ending. Now up to 5 or 6 Betas and it's starting to bugg me. Well, better it buggs me now than the forum later huh? >_< Of course there is nothing i can do about this and nagging about it isn't helping anyone, so, i simply ask;

Is there an approximate deadline for the 3.0 Final... or at least targeted timeline? For those of you with technical expertize; do you see IPB 3.0 Final being released this year?

Personally I think they will just throw the RC to us as a gift, if not, will be after June  It's not like there won't be any more bugs, there will ALWAYS be something to fix.

Bashers...I'd recommend you just wait for final if you can't handle there being bugs in the software. Even then, I don't know that you'll be pleased, because I can guarantee that 3.0.0 final will have bugs in it. As will 3.0.1. As will 3.0.2. And 3.1.0. And every other release.

We are putting in all our efforts to ensure that the 3.0.0 final release is as stable as humanly possible. There are more code changes in this release than virtually any other release we've ever put out (definitely more code changes than any release I've personally been involved with) so we've been taking our time to make sure we get things right. If this bothers you, and you'd really we just rushed it, then I can only recommend you step back and just wait for the final release. We will publicly announce it when final is available.

To see this incorporated with IPB or to see IPS create something much like it to purchase as an additional IPS component would be a dream come true!

Would be really nice if there was a way to incorporate a chatroom into v3. I'm also interested in offering my members a way to establish a live IM session (outside of the chatroom), instead of always having to PM each other. For instance, they would click "IM" on their profile, and it would wait up to 3 min for the other party to accept.

Even if these two features were considered add-ons, I would definitely pay for them.

    Please consider it...

After the "quality" of the 4th beta, I have decided to dump all my IPS software, and will not be using them after 4 years of support. I am tired of them adding new features now, and breaking things so that a board is inoperable (can't edit members, can't multi-moderate, can't change a few board settings) ... yet being told there's hardly any bugs. In my experience with software development, betas are generally feature locked, and virtually bug free, but here they are at the 4th beta still adding features. I've run out of patience trying to develop skins with things not working. I have re-downloaded and re-installed the betas probably well over 10 times each, tried 3 different dedicated servers, and still these bugs are there, but can't be replicated by staff. So, for now, this is au revoir from me.

P.S. The "Edit" button STILL doesn't work in FireFox.

Uh, you misread my post. I said before June, not in June.

Additionally, we absolutely cannot release the forum upgrade without the components. Customers have purchased these components from us and it is our responsibility to ensure there are compatible versions available for the new version of the forums.

nooo, june is too late allowing vb to catch up.

Should have stuck to the core forum rather than running off with all the plugins

yes that is exactly what it is and vb and other forum software do use this feature, which I think is brillient and could really be effective in IPB. It's a way to allow users to join groups themselves as set by the forum admin. So if one wants to join a group called 'Premium Members' which would allow them access to certain forums after reaching 500 posts not allowable to Standard Members they could join this group and be approved by a Moderator or be auto-approved based on the admin's setting. This is a very nice way to upgrade members without having to manually switch them to another group as this would do it upon approval automaticly.

Definately a needed feature! +1

there is a mod from compguy11.com that allows to create groups and users can join this groups and so on. phpbb and vb have this functionality in base distributive will you add this functions to 3rd version ?
