You are currently using a legacy package. In your client area, under your licence, you will have the option to convert to community classic. This allows version 5.

Thank you all good :)

Good to see how it evolved the last ...looking at my profile... gosh: 23+ years

Great work! 🤩

Congratulations to the Invision Team!

With 5.0 we are going to start evaluating hosting our entire site on 5.0, removing WordPress and a need for any type of bridge - this would be amazing if possible!

Would Invision allow us to schedule the upgrade process? I assume currently it would be on a queue basis, for those who click first, and they would need to be ready.

If clients are rushing to upgrade and the demand is high, it might be better to have a more thought-out upgrade process, to upgrade when people are ready and when third-party resources are available. Meaning Invision wouldn't be hit with requests, but site owners can work on what's needed within a timeframe better suited for upgrading their sites.

I appreciate that an upgrade is on offer, especially when historically clients were promised one free upgrade (something I have never used).

I won't be rushing to upgrade, or causing further work for Invision. There are certain resources I would like in place, but my suggestion would only work if the demand creates a vaccum of problems from people rushing and therefore delays the process for everyone.

I'm sorry for any confusion, however, we haven't performed upgrades on Classic/self-hosted in years... perhaps a decade. It's fairly straightforward -- simply download, upload and run /admin/upgrade. Or, we would be happy to help migrate you to cloud. 😉

It's okay, I mistook the "request upgrade" though I should have read the image. No wonder I couldn't find it. 🤣

When I upgrade, can I escalate issues to a ticket? On my dev site, using Beta 13, I think. I have no end of theme-related issues; some I have resolved by removing traces of plugins from within my database. Most I haven't been able to resolve, despite disabling and uninstalling apps/plugins when upgrading from 4.7.

I'm aware that tickets are generally discouraged in favour of posting in the forum, but I am still mindful of the hacker(s) who took my site down. So, when I do finally upgrade, which won't be for a while, I think there will be many problems with which I will need support. I'd much rather avoid anything publicly displayed, especially upgrading to a new major version. If I can't, I'll find some other means. 👍

That's great to hear, and I need at least a day off before starting v6. 😅

No no no… don’t you dare to slack off now.

You will need to download the v5 files and apply them manually before running the admin/upgrade upgrader.

If we used the delta upgrade system, it would pull all the v5 files and then throw an error as the code is very different.

Do you recommend deleting all the files first with the exception of the upload folder and the conf_global.php, and only then upload the new files?

There is really no need

Pardon my ignorance but I don't even know what "Community Classic" is. I am self hosted and I stay current with my renewals. What am I doing wrong?
Thank you in advance.

EDIT: never mind, I see the link to it in my client area. I will read up on what it is over there. (sorry)

Classic is a change in our license terms for version 5 and beyond to ensure self-hosted remains viable for both our customers and us for the foreseeable future. You can check the new terms, offering and pricing in your Client Area -> Manage Purchases -> click your license -> Upgrade.

If I switch to the new license, will my $500 one-time branding removal still apply, or will I have to pay for branding removal separately under the new terms?

It is an upgrade, not a new license so yes.

Congrats on the launch! 👏

🙏

It would be the same as any other manual upgrade. So upload a fresh set of v5 files over what you have, and then run the upgrader from /admin/upgrade.

Of course, you should fully backup database and files before you begin

Ahh thank you. Of course. All looks OK (but won't upload the Uploads directory as it would wipe what's already in there).

@Matt We are still on the "legacy" licensing for our board. When I log into the client area I dont see the option to request upgrade to get access to the v5 software. Do we need to move to
"Change your license to new Invision Community Classic terms"

Or will we eventually get access to it? Thanks.

Yes, you need to change the license terms to access v5. Once you do that, you can go through the upgrade process. (Downloading the v5 files, uploading them, and then running the upgrader.)

Thanks for the info, need to figure out if its worth almost double my yearly licensing fees, just to try it and see if its worth the upgrade.

I'm not sure if I would recommend this approach, to be honest. Deleting plugins means you wipe any settings that the 3rd party author might transfer to an app. It's not necessary to disable applications, as the upgrader will do that automatically (and it will lock them as well).

I'm also not sure that I would delete Pages templates. You may want them for reference.

Deleting themes is probably a good idea, though.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to write a blog article about how users with plugins, apps and theme customizations can best proceed before upgrading. Something like “Reset all Pages databases to default templates”, “Delete old themes” (or not), “Delete plugins you are sure you don't need anymore”... So that at the end we have the cleanest possible IPS5 when we upgrade.

Great news, our agency has been following the development closely and are keen to start working with our client on their community with V5.

A question relating to this is when can we expect to see updated developer documentation? Currently it is still referencing only IPS4:

Appreciate that you are all very busy and deserve a bit of a break after getting the release over the line :)

You should always be doing "merge". So overwriting only files which already exist. It shouldnt be deleting any files/folders

They will come eventually, but in the meantime, you may find these helpful in getting started
