Why two skins after upgrade?

After upgrading to 4.2.7 there are now two skins in the ACP

Default

4.2

Which is the actual default IPB skin and which one should be deleted or do they both keep coming back after each upgrade?

You've presumably upgraded from below 4.2.

"Default" is the previous default. "4.2" is the new default for the 4.2. IPS made some heavy changes to the menu, so I think they created a second default theme to be used with 4.2 rather than risk templates not being updated in the previous default theme.

So the one that is the true 4.2 skin is the 4.2 skin which I would make a copy of and then modify if I wanted? Yes, I did upgrade from 3.1.4 to 4.1.9 and then to 4.2.7. Safe to delete the :"Default" skin then I take it?

Should be, especially if the 4.2 skin is functional.

Both the default and the 4.2 look exactly the same and both are functional

You need to use 4.2. A few things won’t work in Default, which was your theme in 4.1.
