IP.Chat Service Testing

We are investigating the possibility of offering a chat service for IPB directly from IPS.

This chat service would run inside of your IPB install much like Gallery or Blog however the actual exchange of chat messages would be handled by IPS servers. The high volume of transactions needed for a chat room would probably get you banned from most web hosting providers and, even if you have high-end hosting, it requires a specially tuned server to perform well. You can forget that headache and let us handle the transactions. Chat room statistics and access to log archives will of course be available for owners.

Testing

For the time being, we will only have the chat room open here on our company forums when an IPS staff member opens it. We are looking to test both the interface you use for chatting and the back-end server performance so we need online staff to monitor both sides of the exchange. So keep an eye for the chat link to appear in the top navigation or a "who's chatting" area to show up on the home page under statistics. When you see this then you know the room is available for testing :)

Please post bugs in the bug tracker under the IP.Chat category. You can post feedback here in the feedback forum or just reply to this topic. Please keep in mind this would be a version 1.0.0 so, although we can add all sorts of cool stuff over time, we are focusing on a nice, stable chat room right now. Things like private conversations, multiple rooms, and more are on our list but we must perfect the base chat room before adding on all the extras.

Please note that this is the first test of many users in the chat room so there will probably be issues. We will also be doing server-level testing so you might get kicked out now and again or the service may abruptly close so don't take it personally ;). Your feedback on all areas of the chat from features through usability down to speed of chat responses is appreciated.

Pricing

The pricing of the chat service is yet to be announced and will be based on how many people you have in your chat room at one time. Details of the package levels and pricing will be made available at a later date. The good news is that the first chat package level will be free for active IPB license holders. We hope you enjoy that extra benefit to being a license holder.

When you say active license holder, do you mean active license holder with service enhancement package?

The details haven't been finalised yet, so let's not get too hung up over pricing and technicalities. Right now we want to make sure that the system will work under heavy load, and see how many users a single server can take, etc. before we can give specifics on pricing.

[quote name='Charles' date='16 October 2009 - 07:31 PM' timestamp='1255728707' post='1867725']Right now only those with Active Customer status here on the forums can access the chat (if you can read this topic then you're all set).
Where is it ? http://community.invisionpower.com/index.php?app=chat ?

I got:

[#1093] You do not have access to our chat room.

I definitely like the sound of this so far. :)

...just hope it's not all AJAX'd to the point of loss of functionality like the Facebook chat is.

So this is a larger scale shoutbox with more features?

Seems like a slap in the face to the Community Team.

No, it's not comparable to the Shoutbox, the Shoutbox will still be actively developed as they are two different products.

Damn. IPB gets more and more appealing. Even though I am not interested in a chat service, I am definitely interested in an advance chat application.

I have some great ideas for features. Here they are:

1. In the online users list, the user names should be linked to the user's profile and in the color of their member group.
2. Users with administrator access or users with chat mod access should be in a separate area on the top of the list. This way, they are publicly marked as chat moderators so everyone knows who's who.
3. Chat mods should be able to login to the chat and remain invisible until they choose to show themselves.
4. Mods can "mute" a user by preventing them from chatting for a certain amount of time or indefinitely.
5. Mods can ban a user from the room once or for any amount of time.
6. Moderator features and options can be viewed in an ajax box.
7. Users can private message others inside the chat. This is simply a private conversation (it can be recorded of the user ops for it) between two users.
8. On the sidebar on the forums, there should be a list of everyone currently in the chat room. (Admins can turn on or off this feature)
9. Admins should be able to set a title for the chat room, a general message that users see upon entering it, and send messages at any time during the chat.
10. Admins can setup multiple chat rooms. The chat rooms can have a cap on the number of users inside of it and can be password protected.

These are all the feature suggestions I have at the moment. I'll post more when I think of some.

All good ideas - the ability to have a 'who's chatting' on the sidebar would really encourage chatters. If the admin has multiple rooms then, it would be good if a user could pick their favourite room and see who is chatting in their favourite room.

I agree with you.

11. touch TAB option like on IRC script to call member and not write entire name each time :P (or by clicking on name in discussion area)
12. Links which are posted on tchat must be opened in new window by default to not quit chat
13. Possibility to resize chat window (+ opening in popup system and or new window)

Would also like to see the chat itself being able to be run in a new window - this will enable users to keep it to one side whilst doing other work ;)

I originally said the same thing about chat running in new window I must admit :)

I then realized that I could just open a new window myself.
