Disk Space - any tips?
by Guest andyfair- 9 replies

I am running at about 65-70% of my server disk space used solely for my forum. Does anyone have any tips for reducing the disk space used? We have about a 3 year history of posts stored, I wondered if there was any way of 'condensing' old posts or other tips to enable me to save some space?

Modifying my.cnf to make my board and server work better
by Guest SecondSight- 3 replies

Hello ! I've made modifications to my.cnf and then restarted mysql. At the same time I was looking at the server status and I noticed that : - before I restarted the server, the "Memory used" value was 20 % (with 80 users online), the "Server load" value was about 0.30/0.70, and the "Swap used" value was 5 %. - after I restarted the server, the "Memory used" value was between 8 and 9 % and the "Swap used" value was 0.28 %. Now (45 minutes after I restarted the server), I have 280 users online and the values are about the same (the "Memory used" value is now between 9 and 10 %). As for the "memory used" value, what can explain the difference ? It was 20 % with o…

Need to Move MySQL/Databases to Another Drive
by Guest dutton2- 4 replies
We operate a Windows 2003 dedicated server and have two quite busy forum installs on them. Over the past few weeks, we have noticed the server is slowing at times. Our managed server support staff ran some tests and foudn that the MySQL is using up a lot of the IO and recommended that we move the MySQL to our E drive (which is pretty much empty right now). I have never done this and am concerned about downtime or the loss of any data. Can someone recommend a process to follow to ensure all goes correctly? Thanks.

A full backup is really everything?
by Guest WarRockShop- 20 replies

Hi! I'm scared of hackers, but also that I may delete something important so I'll start doing weekly full backups through the Control Panel -> Files -> BackUp Wizrd -> Backup -> Full BackUp. But I would like to know if, for example, I delete everything in my server then use the backup option and restore with the backup I made, EVERYTHING will be exactlly back like it was? It's as easy as that? Thanks!

My server restarted
by Guest SecondSight- 6 replies

Hello ! :) I've noticed a "high" server load (5) and slowness on my board. Then the board no longer responded and I got a 404 error page. Then I could reach the board again. Wondering if this was normal or not, I went in WHM and looked at Apache status and I saw this : Does it mean the server restarted ? Thank you ! :)

Forum loads very slow when mails have to be sent
by Guest WinFuture- 4 replies
We have our own SMTP-Mailserver and it is not very fast. So, when am member registers or a post is written, where a notification-mail has to be sent, it takes a lot of seconds to load the next page. Is there a way to send the mails "in the background", so that the forum can go on with the redirect to the next page?

Whats the best way to speed and opimise the sysytem for my IPB board which has 7500 members and around 200 guest. 250 members online at peak times...Also 370876 posts, and a couple of mods... How would I go about this, and what sort of server load is good for what I'm running.... Thanks

Just curious to see what control panel people use these days. As of right now I plan on using Lxadmin because it comes with lighttpd. I'm the only person using my dedicated server so no need for reselling features and etc.

Split mysql reads/writes to different servers
by Guest Deco20- 5 replies
By the way that's my case. I've got a sports related website hosted in 5 servers. On of the future problems I will have is that I do load balancing with the static content, the scripts, etc. but the database of the forum is in a "big" server and I'm afraid I will not be available to use mysql cluster to make load balance because no software forum seems to be ready to split writes and reads.

Server Resource Issues
by Guest DrumCorpsFan- 5 replies

I've been having a number of issues recently on my server which normally result in the system (RHES Rel 4 - dedicated) starting to swap pretty heavily - then down that slippery slope into oblivion. Watching 'top' shows me that before this happens, it appears that mysqld is running at >100% CPU and multiple httpd processes have stacked-up. We were able to catch a snapshot of the mySQL process list during a couple of these incidents and they've all looked very similar. Here's one example: 73333 dcp_forumdb localhost dcp_dcpforum Query 35 Locked UPDATE main_topics SET posts=8,topic_queuedposts=0,last_poster_id=19738,last_poster_name='drummerdud 73335 dcp_f…

Topic prune tips please
by Guest fineline- 2 replies
For reasons I won't bother you with, we have a very large database with 100,000 topics and well over a million posts. Can't really see any benefit in that and presumably makes the CPU work harder during searches. I found that using the topic prune takes an age, about 1 sec per topic. I zapped just 2000 topics last week and took over 30mins so to half our db would probably take around 14 hours at best. Was wondering what others have found the optimum number of posts per cycle was, I used 50, and could keeping the forums running during a prune cause any problems? Would it make sense to start the prune at say midnight when traffic is light, go to bed and forget it? W…

Yes, I did ensure that I got the right path down and yes UDG is a supported transport protocol... any ideas?

Linux or Windows for server?
by Guest 3DKiwi- 7 replies
Hi. I'm looking to change hosts for a number of reasons. I currently have my site / forum running on a dedicated Linux server with PHP3 and MySQL 3.23. I want to change hosts and are looking at a host offering either a Linux server or a Windows server. Both with the current versions of PHP and MySQL. I'm more comfortable working in a Windows environment but are there any pitfalls running on Windows? Any issues moving my db? Thanks Nigel

Very slow queries causing IPS Driver Errors
by Guest PePiPoo- 6 replies
Recently my board has been getting increasing numbers of IPS Driver Errors, to the point where it's virtually unusable for hours in the middle of the day. The problem appears to be that (some) search queries are taking extremely long times to complete, and all the other queries coming in are just backing up. I turned on MySQL slow query logging and a couple of examples are shown below. Can anyone suggest where the problem is and what I can do to fix it? # Time: 080123 13:48:39 # User@Host: pepipoo[pepipoo] @ localhost [] # Query_time: 392 Lock_time: 0 Rows_sent: 409 Rows_examined: 134607 SELECT p.pid, p.queued, t.approved, t.forum_id FROM ibf_post…
