Getting a new OS, any thoughts on which is best?
by Guest Wondering Soul- 7 replies

Hey :) I've just recently bought another server for a business im running with a friend (plus a few other sites) and I decided to experiment with some of the different Operating Systems! In the past (and still on my main server) I have always ran Red Hat Linux and never really felt the need to change but with this new server im looking to do just that :) So, I narrowed it down to these: Ubuntu, CentOS, Gentoo, Debian, Fedora and Suse Im basically looking for some thoughts about which you prefer and why really, just so I know what's what about each :) Thanks =)

MySQL Causing a few problems...
by Guest Wondering Soul- 13 replies

Hi, recently I have been having a few problems with MySQL on my server. Before I go into the details, I thought I would post some server info as someone always asks for some specs :P Processor: Intel G5 Xeon 2830 Dual Quad Core (8 core) Memory: 8 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 PC2-5300 Hard Disks: 8 x 73 GB Pluggable SAS SFF 10,000 RPM UHD Running: Linux/CentOS 5 Final Ok, so the problem I had has now occurred on three separate occasions in the past two days. It seems to occur at times when my forums aren't particularly active ( 80 Guests, 200 Members online in past 15 mins). That amount drastically increases during my peak times and the problem has never occurred then. The last occu…

Editing post causes high iowait
by Guest TCWT- 2 replies

Anyone know why when editing a post with quick or full edit, the iowait jumps as high as 40%? This happens occassionally and even on a idle server. I've tested this many times, however when you post the message for the first time, this doesn't happen.

Apache behind WRT54G
by Guest Brandon D- 2 replies
Hi all, I'm back home after spending a year at college where they were nice enough to give us our own static external IP addresses. Showing people stuff on my internal development server then was incredibly easy. Now that I'm home and behind a Linksys WRT54G router on a residential cable account, I'm having issues. I assigned my server a static internal IP address, gave it the proper subnet and used the router's internal IP as the gateway. I used my ISP's DNS servers in the configuration. After configuring those properties I went into my router configuration and redirected port 80 to my static internal IP address. People can now see my server using my external IP add…

My server is running on LiteSpeed web server, it really kicks butt. The maker says PHP4 is faster than PHP5. Which is better to use for IPB? It's the only mysql/php site on my dedicated server. Also, is there a setting for APC opcode cache like eAccelerator does? Thanks in advance. :)

I need to create a limit of 4 image files per post. Also, I want to limit the total maximum allowable space for images per post of 120KB. How do I set these limits? Is there also a KB limit to the entire post including text and images? What should this be? Or is there a setting for text and one for attachments? Thanks for you help!

Help - server load through the roof since upgrade
by Guest JanetGeorge- 15 replies
My forum was upgraded last night from 2.1.7 to the latest version (very painlessly thanks to Josh :flowers: ) but since then server load has been through the roof and MySQL (too many connections) errors are occurring non-stop. I've turned off search (the usual hog) but it hasn't helped. Any thoughts?? I though that the main feature of the new version was extra speed - and it did seem faster this morning - but since lunch time it's been dire.

Board MySQL Optimization Tips
by Guest Solomon- 12 replies

Hello bfarber, Many thanks for this tutorial. I am however, having some difficulties implementing the procedures described therein. When I go into phpMyAdmin using cPanel, I see a thin panel on the left with some databases and one among them is the _ipb database. On the right I have two columns "Localhost" and "phpMyAdmin - 2.11.0" and both these show some options and info. I do not see the option "forum_sessions" or similar (considering different database names etc.). When I click the _ipb database it opens the list of tables in the panel on the left and structurally displays of these tables on the right. At the top of it there is a menu consisting of Structure | SQ…

Utilising dual drives
by Guest JanetGeorge- 2 replies

As my old server is dying under the load, I've just invested in a Conroe 3040 Dual Core 1.86GHz with 4 GB RAM and 2x 250GB SATA Drive RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 Having never dealt with 2 drives before, I'm wondering about the optimum way to use them to improve performance. My primary site has a very busy IPB forum - 200 users online most times - currently the database is about 1.2 GB In addition I have a dozen small sites - mainly static pages. Would I be best putting the big site on one drive and the small sites on the other? Or the database on one and the rest of IPB on the other? Or??????

Secure conf_global in shared hosting
by Guest Axel Wers- 17 replies
I read some info about security of conf_global.php, in bug report: conf_global.php file able to be included from anywhere. I have question: How can I get access to conf_global.php file via php skript? I remember that I used to know but I have forgotten it... At IPSBeyond was one topic about this. I had conf_global.php file in /home/forums/ directory and I uploaded php file with some skript to /home/test/. I ran it and I saw conf_global.php content. Then I tried Brandon's security fix: if(strpos($_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME'],"/my_path/main_forum/") === false) { echo "Configuration being called from the wrong area."; exit; } I put it to my conf_global.php file…

I am running at about 65-70% of my server disk space used solely for my forum. Does anyone have any tips for reducing the disk space used? We have about a 3 year history of posts stored, I wondered if there was any way of 'condensing' old posts or other tips to enable me to save some space?

Modifying my.cnf to make my board and server work better
by Guest SecondSight- 3 replies
Hello ! I've made modifications to my.cnf and then restarted mysql. At the same time I was looking at the server status and I noticed that : - before I restarted the server, the "Memory used" value was 20 % (with 80 users online), the "Server load" value was about 0.30/0.70, and the "Swap used" value was 5 %. - after I restarted the server, the "Memory used" value was between 8 and 9 % and the "Swap used" value was 0.28 %. Now (45 minutes after I restarted the server), I have 280 users online and the values are about the same (the "Memory used" value is now between 9 and 10 %). As for the "memory used" value, what can explain the difference ? It was 20 % with o…

Need to Move MySQL/Databases to Another Drive
by Guest dutton2- 4 replies
We operate a Windows 2003 dedicated server and have two quite busy forum installs on them. Over the past few weeks, we have noticed the server is slowing at times. Our managed server support staff ran some tests and foudn that the MySQL is using up a lot of the IO and recommended that we move the MySQL to our E drive (which is pretty much empty right now). I have never done this and am concerned about downtime or the loss of any data. Can someone recommend a process to follow to ensure all goes correctly? Thanks.

A full backup is really everything?
by Guest WarRockShop- 20 replies
Hi! I'm scared of hackers, but also that I may delete something important so I'll start doing weekly full backups through the Control Panel -> Files -> BackUp Wizrd -> Backup -> Full BackUp. But I would like to know if, for example, I delete everything in my server then use the backup option and restore with the backup I made, EVERYTHING will be exactlly back like it was? It's as easy as that? Thanks!

My server restarted
by Guest SecondSight- 6 replies

Hello ! :) I've noticed a "high" server load (5) and slowness on my board. Then the board no longer responded and I got a 404 error page. Then I could reach the board again. Wondering if this was normal or not, I went in WHM and looked at Apache status and I saw this : Does it mean the server restarted ? Thank you ! :)

Forum loads very slow when mails have to be sent
by Guest WinFuture- 4 replies
We have our own SMTP-Mailserver and it is not very fast. So, when am member registers or a post is written, where a notification-mail has to be sent, it takes a lot of seconds to load the next page. Is there a way to send the mails "in the background", so that the forum can go on with the redirect to the next page?
