You can vote the question up and down, and you can vote answers within the questions up and down. In the listing there, the votes represent the questions being voted on. This is the small arrow next to the question title at the top of the page, not votes on individual answers within the question.

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply, but I'm afraid I don't understand. If you look at the screenshot I posted above, each post with a question shows that it has "0 Votes". But actually each did receive votes. Shouldn't this number reflect the amount of votes each question received?

If not, what does "0 Votes" represent? What must be done in order for this number to change?

Thank you @bfarber for the reply.

Update: I reread what you wrote, and I tried it myself on my forum, and I understand now, I can vote each question either +1 or -1. Is the purpose of this function for people to vote if they thought the question was a good one or not? If a question gets a lot of negative votes, wouldn't that discourage someone from asking any further questions or possibly encourage them to ask better ones next time? Is that this functions purpose?

On the main page, as I posted the screenshot for above, it really does seem like that column of "0 Votes" should represent how man votes in total, positive or negative were submitted for each answer within that particular question. Just as another way to show activity within that question. Not everyone will leave a answer, but they might vote on a answer. I think showing activity is more important than seeing if people think the question asked was good or bad. Each person will make up their mind on that the second they read the question.

Just my thoughts. Thanks again for explaining. I really do appreciate it.

  2. I'm also using Mike John's Auto Welcome app. Works great for what it does. I am still setting up a Help Guide section breaking down how to use features on the forum, once that's done, I will include a link for them to check out all the features. 😉

I think it's pretty interesting how on Reddit, you can follow a chain of replies. Whereas in IPB, it's a long list of thread. I imagine for someone casually browsing they'd be overwhelmed with the amount of replies to sort through. I would love to explore options on how to display comments so that things are simplified.

    1702466824_ScreenShot2020-05-11at1_24_26PM.thumb.png.e3dab5540531e8daeb0b40d7e9dc7ce9.png

I was actually going to post about this same thing a while ago, this is similar to FB replies. I only want to use this sort of idea on one section of the forum, the 'Introduction' section (which I don't currently have, it's just a thread in a section)

But let's say someone joins the forum, a thread is auto generated to go into the 'Introduction' section, which will have their name first, so it can be sorted alphabetically if needed, but defaults sort by join date, so the title would be something like, 'breatheheavy - Welcome to IPB'. Then there could be custom auto generated content just saying 'Welcome breatheheavy to IPB. If you'd like, please share a little bit about yourself  ....." Then the person has the opportunity to leave a reply in that thread. But let's say others on the forum start leaving replies before he gets a chance to, those replies ONLY show under the 'breatheheavy' thread, and are even closed when looking at this section. So you basically only see a bunch of blocks/threads with each persons name. There would be a 'Read replies' link to click to expand all replies for the 'breatheheavy' thread.

So now after 10 people leave a comment welcoming breatheheavy to the forum, breatheheavy finally leaves a comment sharing some details about himself. His post would be automatically placed directly underneath the first initial 'Welcome' thread with his name. Maybe slightly highlighted like the Q&A section where the most voted answer gets placed at the top and highlighted.

So again, I would love to see replies implemented this way but for this custom section of the forum.

to have a floating reply button or even reply box, available on a topic page at all times, so you can start working on your reply wherever you happen to be in the topic.

This is a great idea, love it. I do hope to see this added at some point.

  4. Anything that can be done to personalize the Profile page would be an added bonus to the what is already an incredible system with what IPB offers.

We do go to forums to discuss topics, but once I've read a comment I like, especially from a new member, I do want to know more about them. This is where I could get ...

    instantly taken into their world

if once I visited their profile page, I could get a better understanding of who they are, what they like, their passions, interests, and more. But most importantly presented to me in style, their style. Each profile page could be unique, as unique as each individual on a forum is.

    A Couple Suggestions.

Integrate the BLOG application in a limited state for the Forum. The new default tab on a profile page instead of being Activity, could be Blog. Members would be able to create content-rich blogs to any length, that would be displayed in condensed, truncated blocks, so they are all the same size, and could include pagination in case they have a lot. Once you click on one of these blog entries, it either opens in a new page, or opens in full right there on their profile page.

Just as we as admins can Manage Blocks on the forum, pages, etc, make it so members can Manage Blocks designated for them. NO HTML ones of course. Have "Profile Builder Widgets" similar to these:

These could be custom widget blocks made only for Profile pages. This way they set up their profile page and display things they like, how they want, in whichever colors they'd like, etc.

Maybe place a Video Block on the left, they can add a title to it, color the title, change font, size, etc. Have a Image block, where they can place a single image with a header maybe, have the image show in full size with lightbox, if they want, they get some control settings too. Give them the option to link to their Album in the Gallery. Have a slider showing thumbnails of their other photos, when they click one it shows in the main box, in a bigger size.

Have a text widget block so they can give it a title and say anything they'd like.

My Favorite TV Show at the Moment

    Book I Last Read

Movie I'm Looking Forward To Seeing

Instead of us creating custom Profile fields, let me them basically show/display what they would like to express.

A Recent Posts widget, or basically let them highlight posts, instead of Our Picks, give them a My Picks block. They can either highlight some posts they've created or posts from others they have participated in and want others to know about.

    --------------------------------

@TheJackal84 definitely understands how to give a profile page some unique customization, he is offering some GREAT plugins:

    Profile Backgrounds
    Profile Songs
    Profile Video

    --------------------------------

I can go on and on, but basically an integrated Blog style feature for Profile pages with modular blocks they can arrange and manage and completely customize to their liking. It's funny because instead of calling it their Profile page, they could call it *MySpace, which is exactly what it would be. Their own personal space to set up as they wish.

*That name does sound familiar. 😉

If you open your acp > look & feel tab > videos > front > widgets > videosComments

    Find and change:

    data-ipsTruncate-size='6 lines'

    Save.

Perfect. Easy fix. Thanks again Mike.

I did reply to the last private message you sent me, when you get a chance I'd appreciate if you could check it out. Thank you!!!

Is this for the sidebar widget? There should already be something to truncate longer text after 6 lines.

Yes, for the sidebar widget. And yes you are correct. I just checked. I have one comment that is truncated at 6 lines. I didn't know that this was already in there. Is it possible to explain how/which file to edit to change the amount of 6 to maybe 3 or 4? Many thanks Mike!

I am not sure I completely understand how to use this plugin, is it possible someone could provide an example, explain how this works. I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

  8. If someones leave a question on a advert, shouldn't the seller receive a notification that someone left a question for them? I checked the Notification Settings, and I do not see the option to turn on for this. There definitely should be a setting for, 'An advert has received a question'.

If I am missing something please let me know. I just found out today that someone left a question on one of my adverts back on April 15. If this not a feature/setting, could you PLEASE consider adding this, as not answering a question in a timely manner could mean the difference between sale or no sale.

    Thank you so much!!

  9. Feature Request:

Is it possible to add the ability to set a character or word limit for the comments shown in the 'Video Comments' block. Just in case someone (has happened to me) leaves a long comment. This way the size of the block will stay consistent when displayed.

    Thank you.

You created a new group and wanted that to be your "new members" group instead of editing the default group and creating a new group for your "full members".

When you put it this way, this is something I can understand. Thank you for all your help with this. I hope others see this that may be struggling with the same thing and can use the info you've provided.

    Thanks again Morrigan.

  11. I am not getting a notification that someone clicked to Buy an item.

I went into a category listing today to look around, and saw 2 items I listed as "Pending". I never received a notification within the forum of  this. I did check my notification settings, and everything is set correctly.

On the advert itself, there was no way to find out who had clicked to buy the advert, until I clicked on Advert Actions > Advert History, then it showed the user plus 'Clicked in the BUY button in the advert'. (Which btw should probably say 'Clicked on the BUY button for this advert')

Could you please help me resolve why no notification is sent when someone clicks to BUY an item?

UPDATE: After I created a new account and clicked BUY on a item I was selling on my main account, it took me to the cart, then to Paypal.

Is it possible that it DOES NOT go to the cart, and the BUYER and SELLER work out payment on their own.

I thought this setting here did that?
    Classifieds-.jpg.96e298b6a4418c0108eb0402131a9948.jpg

If I disable 'ENABLE TRANSACTIONS', what exactly does that mean?

Also, did it go to the cart and was going to allow me to pay via Paypal because the person I was trying to buy from was the Admin of the forum? If I tried to BUY something from someone else, would it still go directly to the cart and allow payment?

Thank you for your help. I really want to get this set up right.

UPDATE - UPDATE: After some testing, I'm pretty sure if I don't want the forum to be the middle man, and handle any payments from buyer to sellers, then in the Commerce Integration tab, I need to disable 'Enable Transactions' and 'Enable Offers', is this correct? Then the only button someone can click on if they want to buy, is 'Contact Advertiser'. Is this correct?

If you look at the conf_global.php file in your FTP, there is a line member_group that defines the default registration member group (usually group ID 3). Effectively what you want to do is

    1. Set conf_global.php member_group to be the group you want all newly registered users in (in your example "NEW").
    2. Set up a group promotion rule so that after 10 posts, the user is moved into the better member group ("Members" in your example)

    That's it.

Finally!!!! It worked. Such an easy fix, but again, something very different than what's in the guide. Not sure what the issue was with that. But I am very thankful for you taking the time to provide assistance and a solution for my issue. Many thanks!!!

If you don't want them in your base member group you need to enable admin approval.

Do you mean under the Registration tab, here?

IF you want something where they upgrade after X posts you need to create a secondary member group that is the "true members" group. That is promoted after X posts.

It's so funny cause following the Help Guide that I linked too, it makes it seem so straightforward, but it's not.

    Group Promotion Rules

You would set up group promotion rules within the following area of the ACP

Members -> Members -> Group Promotions

From here you can add any number of criteria in which to use for promoting members. In this example I have set up to move members who have done 1000 posts . Whilst the example below is quite simple, you can see from the options available, you can set up some quite complex options, should you wish to do so.

There is no mention of even using a Secondary Group at all in the guide. I just want to achieve what the guide is going over. I set up a group let's say named "NEW", when someone first signs up and activates their account, they would be placed in "NEW" under their name on the forum it would show them in the group "NEW". I would limit this groups permissions, disabling signatures, animated profile pics, amount of conversations they could send a day, etc, once they've reached 10 Posts, then they would move to the 'MEMBER' group. That simple.

What you've suggested to do, I'm not even sure what to do with that info, following the guide did not work. If there is anyway you could actually break it down, step by step what each setting needs to be in order to achieve this, I would be forever grateful. If it's too time consuming, no worries, I understand. Thanks anyway for the reply. I do appreciate the effort to help.

  15. I'm basically trying to set up Group Promotions to where when someone joins the forum, they are placed in a group with limited capabilities until they reach 10 posts. Then they will be moved to my 'Members' group.

In Group Promotions I've set up the group, followed this guide:

Just like the Guide, under Filters, for Groups I left it set to 'All Groups'. Everything else I left settings to 'All', for Content Count I set it to 'More than' - 9. Under Actions I set 'Move to group' to Member. In this group at the top, I do have 'Enabled' turned on.

in Groups, I have this groups setting, 'Enable Group Promotions' turned on.

Now, people are registering, but they are put in my 'Member' group, and not this new group I've made. Does anyone know why this would happen? I would really appreciate any help with this.

    Thank you.

That's currently a technical limitation of IPB because I'm using the "Key Value" field. Hopefully IPB 4.5 will allow me to add my own custom language bits and I can fix this then.

That's understandable. Thanks for letting me know. At least I was able to change the text within the fields.

This is what freaks me out 😅

I imagine it'll be a few weeks or months after 4.5 officially debuts before I can upgrade because of the third-party apps and plugins.

Also don't forget, just because the update is out, does not mean we have to upgrade to it right away. I will probably wait until some of the minor tweak, bug fix updates get released, and for the plugins I use to all get updated for 4.5, then at that point, I will clone my site (Cloudways makes this extremely easy to do) and test things out on a test installation. Hopefully I can do it this way. 😕 Good luck with everything moving forward though, exciting times for sure. 4.5!!

It should work. However I do not use it any more. The approval process from FB for the feature was a way to long and too complicated for me.

I know what you mean, I spent some time trying to set it up and it just got too complicated so I gave up.

I do not share tons of posts in FB only some that can potentially bring users. I create my shares several times a week manually as described above.

Same here. I will try out the method you posted, thanks for sharing the guide. 👍

    Hello,

Does it show up in mobile devices? I honestly don’t remember. I guess it shouldn’t as there is no much space for it.

It does and works perfectly on mobile too.

    Screenshot_20200503-105430_Chrome.thumb.jpg.5bafcbafbe871b3fd0243994fd86020e.jpg

I guess the layout isn't that bad. At least the letters are still big enough to tap.

  20. @Sonya* Does the social media promotion option not work anymore? I was never able to set it up.

Also @Patrick Ewing with that plugin, it only uses images that we're attached to a post, not ones you may have posted directly in a post.

"This plugin will use the first image uploaded as attachment in a topic and set it as as Open Graph image (“og:image”), so social media sites (Facebook, Twitter and more) can use it as thumbnail image to represent the link."
