I want the overall look to use as an option at my own board. :P

The new IPS avatar (minus the IPS logo of course) would totally rock. I mean as far as the rule against using avatars with the IPS logo, if someone was really out to do it, they could easily do it (not that it makes it okay or anything). Just I like the overall look. :)

I'm more interested in the general design. Keep the logo out of it. It's not the logo that would be of use anyway. :)

The new IPS staff avatars look rather nice. Also looks nice on Alex (albeit green because he's a community developer).

Any chance of a GDK/PSD being released for those who want to have similar avatar styles for different boards? :D

Something that vB has that IPB doesn't.. "Smart" marking of read topics. If you read a topic that has new posts but you don't read the last page of the topic, then it's still marked as unread (because really, you have unread posts in that topic). If you happen to start reading the topic (say the first of 5 pages) and your first unread marker is in page 3, then it'll take you to that first unread post on page 3. If you go to page 3 and then look at the topic list again, I believe it'll take you to the first post on page 4 (since you didn't look at it or the last page yet). Basically only marks all the posts read that you might have actually read, instead of the entire topic.

Sometimes the error messages thrown by IPB can be a little bit abrupt and not very user friendly. Particularly those that involve viewing permissions. Perhaps these could be made to be a bit more helpful to the end user in a future version? For example instead of the current "[#103139] You do not have permission to view this forum." how about offering up some reasons as to why this might be the case. e.g "not logged in" followed by links to register or log in. etc.

Wolfie got a reaction from vesperala in Include fixes in the bug tracker
If this has been asked before then ummm.. Oops.

Anyway... It would be nice if fixes made were to be documented as part of a fix in the bug tracker. I'm not talking about complex fixes, but more of simple or of elevated severity/importance.

If it's a small typo in the php code or if it's something else that only takes a couple of minutes to do, then it'd be nice to know so that members can apply the fix themselves.

If it's got a more than average severity level, that fix would be appreciated as well, at least if it's something that is severe because of the amount of functionality it affects, etc. I know that security issues are always made available via announcements, so that's not really a concern (kudos to IPS for always making those available in a very timely fashion).

Obviously if it gets complex, requiring an edit in multiple files, SQL queries, etc, then it's best for us to just wait as the instructions would take up quite a bit of time to include. But simple fixes could help us not only do minor 'upgrades' while we wait for the next release, but also if that bug fix causes another issue or isn't working quite the way it's supposed to, then it can be addressed again and another attempt made before the next release.

I'm also not talking about nightly releases or anything. Just something we we customers can do fixes to our installs if we want (and we could even pick and choose the fixes to install until the next release). When a fix isn't made available, something that explains what was happening or what was changed would be nice to.

Sometimes a fix or an explanation is included and that's very much appreciated, as it's usually done in a way that helps us to understand (in concept at least) what was wrong and what was done to correct it. Just would be nice if this was done more as a standard.

Just in case there's any misunderstanding, I'm not dogging on IPS in any way. Just that I noticed a bug in which the fix was included and it was nice to see it. I know that it'd be next to impossible to do it for every single bug reported, but if it's a simple enough fix (and I do mean simple) or if it's an important enough fix, just be nice to be able to apply it without having to wait. Obviously, all bugs reported and fixed up to this point should just be left as is. Just some feedback as 'food for thought'.

Wolfie got a reaction from RobertMidd in Bulk Mail alternative
The mail-per-hour should be a board wide setting. If set to 0, unlimited. Otherwise the number if the maximum number of mails allowed per hour. This way if bulk mail is being sent out and at the same time notifications or validation emails are being sent out, it will count everything so that limits aren't bypassed by mistake. I would imagine that it'd be possible to just put a timestamp with the number of mails sent out at that moment, then when the board needs to send out another piece of mail, it simply sees how many were sent in the last 3600 seconds and see how many it may send out.

Would be nice if we could also change the default number of mails sent out per cycle for bulk mails. But since bulk mail shouldn't be used but so often, it's understandable if it's left up to being a code edit if the person wants to change it bad enough.

I think he was kidding with the crying bit.

Don't you have a full backup of your board somewhere? Anywhere? Because you could always extract the favicon.ico from that backup to restore your current site.

Also, to add onto what bfarber said, when you request an upgrade to be done to your board, make a backup of your data/board before you submit the request. That way if something gets overwritten that you wanted to keep, it's easy enough to recover. Doing that in addition to the permission settings (of 444 on the images you want to protect) will ensure fewer problems in the future.

    :)

Unfortunately, this isn't logical or possible. To upgrade your forums we *have* to replace the files. Our technicians are inundated with requests as it is, and don't really have time to be picking apart individual directories to determine which files should we upload and which ones shouldn't we upload.

At the end of the day, as Charles said, we simply take the entire installation and upload it. When upgrade packs are available, we will use those as appropriate. I would agree with Charles that if you make a small note when you request an upgrade stating "please don't overwrite my custom favicon" the technician will surely see that and do his best not to do so. :) It's just a little thing to do on both our parts.

Should be. So long as it is 4 or 4+1 (and not 4+2 or 4+2+1). 4 is read, 2 is write, 1 is execute. But since you don't need to execute a picture, no need for the 1 so 444 should be perfect.

I have a simple enough solution. Remove the write permissions from all images that you don't want to have overwritten. favicon.ico (in root and admin folders), emoticons and anything else.

That's my solution to the problem and it works beautifully. :D

Wolfie got a reaction from FLARCHES in Feature suggestions requests
I know that v3.0.0 is feature locked so not requesting it for that.

Hopefully these are simple enough that they can make it into v3.1.0 though.

    * When you are on someone's profile and click to send them a PM, if you will not be able to complete that PM for some reason (user has their PM turned off for example), notify the user then instead of when they click the "send" button. If they do it from their own messenger, where they have to type in the name, then that's different.

    * Made this request back in the v2.2.x days. In the ACP, for the listing of bans (IP/username/email), have each in a separate tab. That way the admin can view only the list they want to see.

    * For bans, allow option to use regular expressions, per ban. Default would be as it is now, but when adding a ban, admin to select to say that the ban is using a regular expression. For those who know how to use it, it would provide greater power for banning multiple objects in a single line instead of adding multiple lines.

    * For bans, allow multiple lines to be entered at the same time (via option to add multiple filters at one time). Could only be one filter type at a time, such as IP or email, but could enter one ban per line, then submit all at one time.

    * Some way of detecting if the board is on an IPS server or not. If not, give the admin the option to not honor a members choice to not receive bulk emails. I don't know if IPS hosting customers can modify their own source but if not, then perhaps include a line to edit in a specific file that would enable the option.

    * If last item is not possible, then some option for being able to send out an email to everyone in the selected user groups in an effort to test email addresses. Way I see it, if someone doesn't have a valid email address, I don't want them to have access on the board. Wouldn't have to be a big email and could be something internal that can't be easily altered. Something small like "Account status checking" for the topic and inside a brief explanation letting the member know that no action is necessary, it's just checking for expired accounts and to please not mark it as spam. Also restricting how often it can be used would be a nice idea, to prevent abuse.

    * Facebook: Be able to prohibit the creation of new accounts using FBC, but allow members to associate accounts with Facebook.

    * Facebook: Allow admin access to view/edit a members Facebook information (including a link to view the members profile).

    * Custom profile fields: Include 2 lines that the admin can use, both optional of course. First line would be a URL/link line. Second would be a display format. Both would replace {content} with the members input. This would be useful when external services are made into fields, such as Twitter or Photobucket, etc. Also could be used to replace all the if/then and else-if statements in the skin to cover things like AIM, MSN, etc.

As I said before, I know that it's too late for v3.0.0 so please consider for v3.1.0 or v3.2.0 (if there will be such a version). For those who feel compelled to tell me that v3.0.0 is feature locked, please read this post again.

Wolfie got a reaction from Ahtuba in Ticket Prioritizing
Lindy, what about something where the user can check off a list of things that match their problem..

Please choose from the list what best matches the issue you are having. ( ) Is your board offline, inaccessible or giving errors? ( ) Are you having a problem getting into the AdminCP? ( ) Has your board been hacked, attacked or in some other way compromised? ( ) etc ( ) None of the above. Picking the wrong item from the list can cause delays in your ticket. If you are unsure of what to pick, then pick none of the above.

A few like there where the person can choose what best matches their problem (similar to the list you have but could be after they have submitted the ticket the first time and before the final submit. "None of the above" could be pre-selected and would cover things like low priority items. Obviously it's hard to cover all high priority items, but if there are 3 for high priority that are generic enough to cover a wide range (but specific enough to eliminate false positives) then that could potentially help prioritize some of the tickets.

Obviously the ones marked "None" might benefit from a fast review by a staff member to see if it's a high priority so it can be bumped up in importance, while leaving the rest of the tickets alone, but no system is perfect.

Hope something in this post is of some use, be nice if it helped to improve the ticket times, even if only a little bit. I've generally never needed to submit a ticket for problems on my boards before, but I can imagine how the customer must feel when it is an important issue and every minute seems like forever.
