So the answer is no as there is no HOOKS tab anymore. So resources from now on will extend only official apps that I have in my license. If the user has another 3rd-party resource, it wonāt work anymore because I donāt have all the marketplace resources out there to add listeners since it checks for the class.Ā
Great improvement.Ā

They will be there for a couple of years for those who wonāt jump in V5 right away.
File edits will be back with resources being sold in devās board. And for those who use marketplace and canāt use FTP, will get limited resources.
But thereās no doubt it will be the end of this marketplace and I truly believe thatās what IPS is after for a while now.
I havenāt decided yet if I will keep developing for IPS, as I told somewhere elseā¦ and I must confess the answer its getting clear at every blog entry.Ā
Anyway, if I remain, certainly will reduce from 300 to 50 maximum, due toā¦ framework limitations. š

Matt, could you clarify exactly what you mean with ālessā. As far as we can see, there wonāt be ways to use hooks anymore. Is that right? I donāt see the Hooks tab in dev center.
What youāre calling listeners that is fired in specific events canāt be called hooks at all, so I guess thatās the reason for such confusion. At least to me.Ā
Once and for all, will we be able to hook in class?
Thank you.

I really don't know what to say except I hope that all these modifications are full of good intentions towards customers and developers as well, which allow many of us to stay in this community rather than seeing other similar products.
I think that you can't have everything without anything, and that you have to have to give up accepting many things, even difficult for a better future product.
for the developers it will surely be a lot of work to update but I hope that afterwards there will be less work to update their applications for future versions which will then give them more time to improve them
I can understand that you close your system as much as possible in order to have a bug-free product, but I hope that you do it for the purpose of improvement and not of exclusivity
there are plenty of paid products better than yours but limited and sold by number of users. and your very strong point of the cloud it must be said is that you do not limit the number of users and views etc.
the developers can help us to have products similar to others for a very competitive price and where the cloud could then be interesting to be taken if we can have what we need without limit.
do what you have to do but be careful that the choices are not only about money because I don't think that makes a community, social product successful... we could see it a little with twitter.. .

Iāll try.
Plugins donāt. Applications will. Everything you could do with a plugin, you always could with an application because both used hooks; itĀ was powerful and you could do basically everything. Hooks are removed in V5. It wonāt be possible anymore and itās been replaced by a hook-points system (a.k.a. Listeners) and a UIExtension, which we donāt know as they didnāt blog about it yet. It will be more limited/restricted, no doubt. Ā Matt said, you can do a lot, but you canāt do everything you could before. The doubt now is how much limited it is compared to hooks.
Translating to marketplace resources: my guess is that a few (compared to the totality) applications/plugins will be fully upgraded to V5. Some will be upgraded but will lost some functionalities (due to hooks it may have today) but vast majority donāt, at least in first moment; improvements will be necessary along the way.
I guess weāll have to wait and see. Get your popcorn and have a seat. Only time will tell.
Marketplace rules will change for V5. 3rd-party devs probably will be allowed to create similar resources.Ā

Me too. Anything we say won't have any effect. As you said yesterday, I hoped we would be heard before it started.
Hoping the UIExtension will be a game-changer. š

Still, remove the ability to hook is a huge step back and will make marketplace even worse and smaller but I guess thatās the point after all. A massive number of resources are dead.
Weāre basically back to IP.Board 2 (file edits will be required for custom jobs as we canāt hook) and IP.BoardĀ 3 (back to hook points era).Ā
Anyway, just my feedback. Not trying to annoy anyone; just my honest feedback.
Tks.

Probably... and due to that, the devs get tired of releasing new stuff and it gets a couple of purchases. There is certainly more to it than that.

I think it's because you are not interested in developing the market.Ā I see a trend to close the community in the future in the cloud with paying customers, they are more profitable.Ā IMHO.Ā One of the advantages of IPS was its good extensibility and variety of applications and extensions.

So regarding this assumed 80% of plugins being lost, the main questions I have are:
Can similar results (i.e. a client wants X added/enhanced to any part of the suite) be achieved with whatever IPS is developing for v5?Ā Maybe in a different way, but the same end result/solution for a client? If so, will the solutionsĀ be Marketplace sellable assets for developers? If not, how does IPS plan on addressing this clear gap in providing functionality to clients that Marketplace devs previously filled in v4? I can't imagine IPS removing the ability for devs to enhance the IPS suite in ways that IPS isn't willing to invest in doing themselves.Ā That would be detrimental to all parties involved.Ā And history (per the number of Marketplace assets) shows there are A LOT of assets/resources clients want and use that aren't part of the suite.

Wow... Things went to the wrong side. It will be too bad if Ips loses Adriano.
I have more installed, but i basically only use 2 plugins.
One from Zayed, theĀ External Link Rich Embed. I think a thing like this plugin should've come with the base suit, but it doesn't. Hope this one doesn't belong to the list of the 80% of plugins that will die because of framework limitations.
And the other one is from Nathan,Ā oembedServices Manager, so we can oembed services that do not come with IPS. Another one i think it should come with the base suit, but it doesn't come.
I only really need those 2 plugins, so i think i'm more or less safe. Let's see what the future brings.

I can think of other ways to accomplish this, but we're not at a point where I can get into how without causing confusion. Suffice it to say, I do think it's still possible.Ā

This can be handled with a Member listener onProfileUpdate (change to pp_last_visitors)
This as well. (members_disable_pm)
This one I'll add to the list for discussion.

Maybe. Someone say yes, other no. I have plenty private custom mods (hooks) and I can take responsible and all consequences. Now it won't be possible.
~ 85-90% I think.
I prefer to wait for more dev blog entries before I'll be more critical, but I feel close to certainty that more than 80% of my projects will not be possible on v5.
Ā
Nope, disagree. Hooks are powerfull.

Seriously, I have several apps and plugins extending classes in the /system folder. That means they're all dead for v5. So far, I don't like the direction v5 is taking at all. No matter what awesome tools you may have in place, being unable to overload (almost) all classes like before is a huge issue.
Ā
Well, that's it for me for now. I won't say anything further until there is more info about those "awesome tools" you mentioned. But I don't have much hope for them.
