I want to set up  group of VIP members and assign the group to a different skin than the rest of the members and guests.

Is that possible and how?

There is no way in which to automatically assign a group a theme. You can give permissions to use a theme to that group, but not automatically change it

The only difference will be advertising. The VIP group should not see advertising. Is there a way to do this?

I assume you figured out that individual ads can be configured to only be shown for some groups, but for the future it would be very helpful to post the actual solution, not only that the issue was solved.
