Wake up and respect your customers!!!

This lesson is only learned when there are no more customers to respect.

I have lost my respect for all software companies. They seem to think that there is a never ending supply of money to support their increasingly dodgy (and seldom reliable) creations.

  2. I have done the update and nothing has changed regarding the guests seeing the flags. This is an important thing because my forum is very international and I want people to see this when they look at the home page (forum index).

    New Feature:

    • Guests now are able to view Member's Country.

I have this ticked but guests are not seeing country flag. My version is 1.3.6.

Not sure how long this has been the case but pretty sure it was working before.

  4. I see the discussion got closed down about 5 years ago. Looking through Lindy's remarks there I can't help but feel that the world has changed from considered replies to short messaging so substantially in those 5 years that it seems like forum-like flat views are now considered antiquated by the next generation.

This is the extinction risk that us old timers in the forum game have to be aware of - what worked for us doesn't seem to work for the next group of internet users. They want brevity and unless you are guiding them by the hand when it comes to following an online discussion, your outlet is just never going to gain favour with them.

@FZare you running the latest version of IPS because there was a bug whenever they released 4.6.6, and they have released a patch to fix that issue.

Yes, I got that advice from Support a little earlier. All sorted now. :) Initially I thought it might have been a template thing on the theme that needed to be done, but fortunately not.

  6. Over on Dpreview.com the forums have the option of showing topics with a threaded or flat view. The threaded view is very reminiscent of the way I used to read usenet groups on a reader who's name I have long forgotten.

It would be nice if IPS could develop a similar thing so that people could follow branches of discussions within the same topic.

  7. Well colour me confused, or amused, or both.

I just got one of my IPS license renewal invoices and I see that it is for 6 months and not the ridiculous, almost 3x the price I was expecting after the last email I got from IPS. Huh? So I come here to try and find out what's going on and I see that 6 month licenses have been restored. Great!

Question: why didn't you send out an email advising your customers of this reversal?

can you please take a screenshot or tell me how to reproducer the issue to check 🙂

I've just seen another person asking the same thing on the support forum so I don't think it is theme related. Looks like IPS has broken something in the latest update. I have now had to turn off all those fields so I can't really show a screen shot of the issue anymore.

Basically all the custom fields that I had created and was showing in the topic view under the user profile have lost their titles and custom formatting. It just shows the content of the field, not what that field is. Eg, one of the fields I added is "Website" which formats like this for the topic view:

    <div align="left"><span class='row_title'><a href="{$content}" target="new">🌍 Visit My {$title} </a></span></div>

...but all that shows under the user's avatar is a dead url (non-clickable). It is ignoring the {$title} and the emoji.

I will see what (or if) support comes back with an answer. Sorry if I rang the wrong bell here. :)

  9. I just noticed this same thing happening. All the custom fields I have created with custom formatting in the topic view are missing their titles (and associated formatting). Example below:

    <div align="left"><span class='row_title'><a href="{$content}" target="new">🌍 Visit My {$title} </a></span></div>

This is the custom formatting, but all that shows is a dead URL (can't be clicked).

  10. Logic is logic. It has nothing to do with incorrect keystrokes from the creator of the logic. Either the logic is faulty or the creator made it faulty on purpose.

But yes, I'm not obtuse enough to state that a massive application won't have problems in logic, especially if there are multiple authors, but in reality those problems are often caused by developers who are "fixing" what ain't broke to begin with. Invision are becoming more and more culpable in this regard as we go deeper into version 4.x. So much so that I am actively looking for a replacement.

Really??  You gotta be kidding me. That is the most outlandish statement I’ve read in a while. Every single major software company issues security updates. What is not known today may be known tomorrow and need to be fixed.

I don't think it's outlandish at all. Software developers are always using security flaws to ensure their own future, that's all. If that isn't true then basically we are just being handed a new flawed product every time they release an update.

  12. Just got the email telling me that my pricing is going up for my 2 licenses (and not by an insignificant amount). I do like the products but for me it's not worth over $500 a year on the small communities I still have. So I have to make a plan.

In my Client Area I can't see an option to remove certain products from my licenses. For instance, on one of them I definitely don't need forums, commerce or gallery, so those can go, plus on the other I could probably dispense with Downloads. A small saving, but a saving nonetheless.

How do I modify my license to exclude them?

I'll answer this, and hopefully it'll get the other question answered as well, at least to some degree.

The Discover feed, in my (and a big chunk of our users) opinion, is too overwhelming and throws too much information at you. Posts or threads alone are ok, both - that's a bit too much, and then adding in reactions just makes it a bit, well, much. Moreover, if one thread has a few posts posted in it in close proximity - it takes over the feed and if you're not interested in this particular topic, you may find yourself feeling like "I've got nothing to read".

For that reason, we've set up two more pages in addition to the discover feed - one that shows new posts, and another that shows new threads - that way you see every thread only once, and you don't get flooded with multiple instances of the same thread. This is where the "Thread feed" widget lived, basically alone (together with the hot topics widget and another unrelated one) and acting as pretty much it's one page. seeing which threads were updated since your last visit is obviously useful if you visit that page often.

Couldn’t agree more about the nature of the feed. It’s confusing and in my opinion it’s not conducive to good community flow.

I’ve been involved with forums since I first discovered them on usenet in 1997. Maybe I’m old and cranky, but the simpler they are the better they become for their users. I moved to IPS from Simple Machines about 10 years ago and it was great at first, but honestly I don’t think it’s so wonderful anymore, mainly because of things like this. IPS needs to leave good enough alone.

As with many feature requests, the “why” is usually more interesting than the “what”. How were you using these widgets? On what pages? For what purpose?
On all my (three) IPS communities, I make sure that the Discovery page is in the main navigation and the main place to check for new content. On two out of the three sites it’s even the homepage. So no member would need to rely on feed blocks to know what has and hasn’t been read. It would be a rather poor way to discover unread content. If your use cases differ, it would help to explain or show it.

What is your "discovery page"? Mine was the home page of the site with a block that displayed the last 20 topics of discussion. The ones in bold type were unread. Now it appears that when a member returns to the site there are no unread topics for them. This is not a good thing.

The default feed that IPS has is not consolidated and to my mind isn't useful at all. I really don't need to see multiple entries into the same topic appearing on the same list. It never been the way I have read any online forum. You go onto the topic and all the unread posts will be there for you to see, one after another.

  15. My blocks had the cache set to 1 minute, so unless it was a very boring post the block would have updated by the time the reader got back to it.

But alas, logic is not being applied to the reasons for removing this most useful feature.

  16. 4 minutes ago, Daniel F said:

It didn't because of the cache.
Let's say the first visitor after the widget cache was truncated has all topics shown as unread.Since he's the first visitor his output will be cached and returned to literally any visitor having the same theme, language and groups and even if these members have no unread topics, the widget would show them as unread!

I have never seen that happening.

And FWIW when most users are going through the community's new posts they use the next unread topic or default feed link. Well that's at least the way i have been doing it since becoming an IPS customer over a decade ago.
