  1. Whether I am right or wrong isn't actually the issue. The point I am hoping to make is that running an IPS platform is not a friendly experience anymore and based on the update policies here it ends up becoming an expensive exercise to keep abreast.

In these difficult times frivolous expenses such as these constant software subscriptions are not going to keep on working as a business model for very much longer. There is no benefit to be had here and pretty soon people like me are just going to unplug the things that are constantly leeching off us.

That's it. I've said what I have to say.

  2. You don't get it.

Here I am with a problem that you say you will only look at if I update to your latest release. This is regardless of the fact that I have a paid up license for this platform. You now say you are not going to help unless I keep my products up to date.

If I do this update to the latest release I will have to re-purchase an app that I already bought, otherwise it will not work on my website.

    THIS IS WRONG!

And it seems to be happening all the time now. I am not a piggy bank. Your software should not be designed in such a way that it is requiring monthly updates that break other things.

    Two things are becoming clear to me here;

    1. I will NEVER purchase anything from your marketplace again.

    2. I no longer have any trust in the goodwill of IPS as a worthy developer of solutions.

If you can't get new business for your products at a reasonable rate know that draining your existing client base with these constant updates is only going to last you so long.

Can nobody answer this question?  Would like to install the latest Invision update but don't want to screw up my forum.

No, I'm holding off because of the warnings. I spent the whole weekend last week updating everything only to find myself back to square one a couple of days later.

I am not amused with IPS right now.

A couple of important things to call out here...

IPS is not the developer of that resource and is not selling that resource.  They don't make decisions about how much third party resource developers sell their work for and they don't dictate if/when any sort of renewal costs would apply.

Keeping the software updated is critically important.  Not only for when something goes wrong and you come looking to IPS for technical support but also for the safety of your site and the protection of your user's data.  You're welcome to ignore upgrading, but it's very dangerous to do so.

Now... if you don't want to see those messages frequently, simply create two logins for yourself.  One that is an Admin and gives you access to the ACP.  Only login to that if you implicitly need to access the ACP.  The other as a Global Moderator.  It would not see the upgrade notifications.  (They're shown only to admins.)

Who created the Marketplace? Indie developers?

I manage well over 50 WordPress driven websites with multiple plugins, free and paid, and I never have as much hassle upgrading anything on those sites as I have with the 2 IPS driven sites I have (one being my own, the other a church site). It's a constant drama that I can live without.

Just last week I spent the entire Saturday and Sunday getting my photography community back up to speed only to find that I am out of date again a couple of days later and must now buy the friggin' plugins again. What kind of BS is this?

No man, this won't go on for too much longer, I can promise you all that.

  5. I have reduced the customisations on my website to the Behemoth theme by @TAMAN, who's dedication to keeping it working I am happy to support, @opentype's templates which I bought years ago and who continues to keep working at no additional cost to me. I have removed the Enhanced Clubs app which did nothing but confuse my community, and the only other one I have in place is the Member's Country flag, which I am now told I have to pay for again if I want it to work with your latest release. That makes me angry because I already paid for it and now I must pay again for the same damn thing with no additional benefit to me, simply because you guys keep shifting the goal posts? This is wrong on so many levels.

Honestly, I understand that software developers need to earn a living but seriously, the last 5 years on IPS has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. You constantly put these annoying pop-up messages on the front end of the website for reminders to update this or update that. We then do the updates and chaos ensues. You must think that we have nothing better to do than work on these websites? Maybe some forum owners do, but I'm sure that many of us simply keep the forums as a benefit to our communities with similar interests in the hope that soon social media will finally be dead.

Yes, IPS has become a frustration in my life and to make it worse the extortion that goes with it makes me want to go back to using good old Simple Machines Forum.

  6. I spent the whole of last weekend getting my site updated with software and the theme I use. Now you bring out another update and once again it's telling me that my theme is going to break and that another application I have is going to require an update or it too won't work. All of which means that I must probably spend another entire weekend working on this website that doesn't actually make me any money.

    This is ridiculous.

You software developers ought to know that your clients are not your piggy banks. Your job is to produce things that work. That is what we pay for. I am not going to keep on paying for things that constantly break and require me to fork out money for other bits that are no longer compatible with whatever unnecessary changes you have made to the thing that once worked.

I feel like I am being extorted.

  7. Now that I have my block looking the way it is supposed to look, something else that is not normal seems to be at play.

So the block is set to pull and display at random ONE photo from a category that contains over 700 images (not stored in any albums). I've been watching the behaviour of this block since I got it looking the way I want it and it seems to only pick from about 10 of the 700+ images stored in the category.

I know that there is some caching going on somewhere, not sure how to stop the block from doing that, but surely it should pick randomly from the entire category? Is there a setting I am missing somewhere?

  8. When I turned off the square thumbnails setting (which weren't square but rectangular), I asked the system to re-build the gallery, which it said it was doing. There are some 3000 images in the gallery in total. I'm assuming that this "re-build" means it is re-building thumbnails? If not then what is it re-building?

I haven't used the gallery in a long time. Starting to remember why.

  9. The biggest issue is that when I turn on the "Dark Mode" option (which is all I want to have active) the Editor in the default mode can't be seen unless mousing over the options. Also the hover text on the switcher seems to be reversed. When you are in dark mode it says switch to dark mode and when in default mode it says to switch to default.

  10. Taman, I have somehow screwed up my theme colours and I can't figure out how to get everything back to default. Is there an easy way to do this? I don't want to use the palette feature anymore but switching this off has not had the intended results. I am seeing strange colours on my theme. Help!

Hi, only globalTemplate and navBar template is modifed in this theme, and theres are no template diffrrences to update this theme  https://invisioncommunity.com/index.php?app=core&module=system&controller=plugins&do=diff

everything should be the same... if things are broken on your side after updating to recent ips version, then go here ACP --> System --> Support --> error logs and see if something is new there and if its related to the theme... or just exaplain whats broken! 🙂

    Not seeing anything in ACP

I have a few variations of Behemoth that the members can chose from. There is the default Behemoth theme (which appears to be working) but the variations (fluid width and colour options for subscribers) are completely messed up. I will PM you a screen shot. This hasn't happened on previous updates so it's weird that it happened now.

invisioncommunity should develop a system that monitors emails and moves the user to a new group called "to be validated" for example if the email sent comes back ...

I don't know how they would be able to do that short of integrating with the mail carrier's systems.

When I send a mass email with the forum, is MailGun able to understand the inactive emails to which not to send further emails?

    Thank you

No, it will require you to set your filters correctly when sending them the instruction to email. I don't know how you would do that, but in my case I got rid of all members who had not logged into the system for more than 3 years. You could also use a similar filter in the bulk mail tool without purging your old members, I suppose.

    by google I mean gmail.

how do you keep track of who has an active email?

I'm not an expert in this stuff, but if you get a bounce via MailGun they will show up in the logs. I suppose you could manually remove the bounces from your IPS database if you were so inclined.

I'd suggest getting in touch with their sales people and asking questions.
