This chat bites. After uploading the files to the directories required, there is no option to install this in the ACP. There are no settings in ACP. And nowhere to enter in the chat key. This was just a waste of time.

    OK guys,
I am currently running a vbulletin forum with a professional design set. My first and foremost worry about moving over to invision was the design of my forum. My thought behind this is that it is going to be a big enough move over to invision as it stands without the fact that the forum will look completely different.

NOW, bare in mind I only purchased invision less than 24 hours ago. I have almost managed to duplicate the look of my forum with only a very very basic knowledge of CSS and some knowledge of photoshop. How have I done this? I would seriously urge you to have a good read through the topic on this forum http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/index.php?showtopic=37422

This tutorial, I would print out and have at the side of you throughout your transition. Its simple, and it works...... Dont worry about your skinning guys. IMO its easier than vbulletin 3.8 and at the end of the day, you would have to learn 4.0 anyways.

We are investigating the possibility of offering a chat service for IPB directly from IPS.

This chat service would run inside of your IPB install much like Gallery or Blog however the actual exchange of chat messages would be handled by IPS servers. The high volume of transactions needed for a chat room would probably get you banned from most web hosting providers and, even if you have high-end hosting, it requires a specially tuned server to perform well. You can forget that headache and let us handle the transactions. Chat room statistics and access to log archives will of course be available for owners.

    Testing

For the time being, we will only have the chat room open here on our company forums when an IPS staff member opens it. We are looking to test both the interface you use for chatting and the back-end server performance so we need online staff to monitor both sides of the exchange. So keep an eye for the chat link to appear in the top navigation or a "who's chatting" area to show up on the home page under statistics. When you see this then you know the room is available for testing :)

Please post bugs in the bug tracker under the IP.Chat category. You can post feedback here in the feedback forum or just reply to this topic. Please keep in mind this would be a version 1.0.0 so, although we can add all sorts of cool stuff over time, we are focusing on a nice, stable chat room right now. Things like private conversations, multiple rooms, and more are on our list but we must perfect the base chat room before adding on all the extras.

Please note that this is the first test of many users in the chat room so there will probably be issues. We will also be doing server-level testing so you might get kicked out now and again or the service may abruptly close so don't take it personally ;). Your feedback on all areas of the chat from features through usability down to speed of chat responses is appreciated.

    Pricing

The pricing of the chat service is yet to be announced and will be based on how many people you have in your chat room at one time. Details of the package levels and pricing will be made available at a later date. The good news is that the first chat package level will be free for active IPB license holders. We hope you enjoy that extra benefit to being a license holder.

Well if you guys are serious about getting market share from vbulletin and migrating boards from vbulletin to IPB, you should at least prvide the option to duplicate the most basic Vbulletin user experience paradigms.

So can we get this as an option? Soon?

Personally, I greatly prefer to view results as posts than as topics. My typical search experience on other forums is to search for a keyword, realize that topic view was default, click back change it to posts, wait for search flood limit to pass, and then search again. To me getting a list of topics back isn't very useful because you don't know the context of the result, seeing the post lets me figure out if it's even related to what I'm looking for, before I click into the topic.

Again, that's just my personal view, if we find that most people prefer a topic listing, we'll change it or introduce a setting perhaps.

Displaying results by topic rather than by post would be much better - with the option to display by post if people preferred.

Can't think of any situation where for the majority of users they would need to see the same word repeated 20 times in the one thread. And so had to look at the 21st result to see the next thread.

Dealing with searches, I recall seeing that when you use +word +word +word it's supposed to return posts that contain all the words (ie, + is must-include) and using quotes lets you search for a phrase, however as an example, if you do a search for "When It's Ready" with the quotes, it returns results of the words individually.

I'd also like to point out that returning posts as results for a "topic search" makes perfect sense and to have the default forum search return results as a combination of topic and thread searches not only reduces the utility of regular search, but it to a certain degree reproduces functionality in the topic search.

I think what is important is that the most fundamental default behaviors of the IPB board conforms to what the bulk of your customers want and need. I also think that as per my example, returning posts as results really doesn't make as much sense as returning threads.

My users have been complaining that since switching from Vbulletin, searching for specific threads has become much more difficult. I believe that the problem is that when I search for "chains" for example, rather than returning threads that contain chains, it instead returns posts that contain chains. So page one of the results might look like this:

    Thread 123
    Thread 123
    Thread 123
    Thread 123
    Thread 345
    Thread 345
    Thread 678
    Thread 678
    Thread 678
    Thread 678

Where the first 4 results are 4 posts from the same thread. The next two are from another thread, and the final four are all from a third thread. So the first 10 search results just represented three threads and 10 posts within those three threads. Whats worse is the first four results are from a thread that was just created 30 minutes ago complaining about how hard it was to find that thread about "chains" that people remember.

I'm not sure it makes sense to return every post that contains the search phrase within the thread because - well if the thread is about chains we just might be mentioning it in every post.......

    1. I don't believe that returning posts should be the default behavior
    2. Is there anyway to change it?
    3. If the answer to #2 is know can we get some improvements here? The default behavior should be to return threads as results, not posts.

Skins should continue to function so long as you apply the changes in the skin difference report we provide.

Point changes are only bug fixes - we don't "change our minds every twenty seconds" - if there is a bug in the skin... we have to fix it ;)

What is breaking about your skins? There shouldn't be anything that causes them to stop working properly outright.

before tell "it can't be faster" show me at least one board running on ipb 3 which is as fast as 2.6 versions. For me it stills a little bit slow, and everybody who was on ipb 1, 2 or other forums (vbulletin, phpbb...) will be agree with me.

Given most issues are upgrade problems and possibly mods I suppose the logical step would be stop upgrading or making any changes and thus not renewing.

To get into the peer-to-peer forums, you need to either have an active support contract or be listed as an alternate contact of someone who does. We can't give support here, you'll have to use the peer-to-peer forums.

If the owner of the license doesn't have an active support contract, you aren't allowed to get upgrades, and shouldn't be asking about them.
