  1. Working on that now, first an Admin CP setting and then a User setting: ..Al
  2. On my test 3.0.0 forum, it sometimes takes 250+ seconds (over four minutes!) to get the results from "View New Content". I can't even imagine what would happen if I tried to convert my live forum to IP 3.0.0 right now, it would be disastrous. I'd like to use Sphinx (I use it on my 2.3.6 forum with great results), but it has some issues that need to be addressed (there's a thread somewhere else discussing this). ..Al
  3. What? Seriously? How the heck can you come to such a conclusion? The people who liked the feature (as it was) never submitted tickets about it. I'd really love to see some of these tickets. Even with some people complaining about the way it works in 2.3.x, an option should have been provided to allow admins (or users) to decide how this should work. This is naivety on Invision's part if they didn't think such a change was going to net them some negative feedback. They were well within their power to make this change in such a fashion to keep everyone happy. And again, this is just one facet of the changes that were made. I don't agree. If it's a feature many of your users use frequently, and is the primary means they use to hunt down new posts they may be interested in viewing, then it could easily sour your users to your forum with the switch to 3.0.0. ..Al
  4. Here's a recent post of mine in yet-another-thread complaining about this feature, where I detail my issues with "View New Content": I've been beating this drum for a while, and on the old preview board there was a long running thread I started about "View New Content". My initial post in that thread was one of the highest voted posts I'd seen on the preview forum. Yet the "majority" of customers found the old "View New Content" confusing and wanted it changed? ..Al
  5. Sorry, I have to call BS on this. I have nearly 20,000 members on my forum and nobody has EVER complained to me that "View New Posts" is confusing. Seriously, what the heck is confusing about it? It shows topics with new posts since your last visit! If someone finds that confusing, then it's amazing they were even able to create an account on your forum in the first place. This is only one aspect of "View New Posts" that was changed, and I will certainly make the above change and test it to see how it compares to "View New Posts" in terms of the results being returned (topics with new posts since your last visit as opposed to "unread" topics). The display of the "View New Content" page (for the "Forums" tab) as well as the amount of information returned is still quite a bit different even with the above change. Sure, things get changed over time and that's fine, when they are well thought out. Please, "not everyone is going to love these changes", talk about sugar coating it. Again, I can't believe that a majority of your customers requested this change. At the very least, the method by which results are returned should have been made an ACP (or perhaps user CP) option, and the display of the results shouldn't have been so drastically changed with less information. ..Al
  6. Same here, I have large site (1.6 million posts) and the "View New Content" issues are going to be a nightmare for me. I love most of what has been done with 3.0.0, but this one issue just boggles my mind as far as the changes made. I've posted extensively on this in the past, but Invision has been very resistant on making significant changes. Some improvements were made to the "View New Content" output to add in some of the information that was removed, but overall it's still a far cry from the 2.3.6 "View New Posts" feature and it's just going to aggravate the heck out of my userbase. I just want it to work like it did with 2.3.6--show me any new posts since my last visit, and show the same amount of information in a tabular format as before. I am not adverse to change by any means, but the changes that were made just seem like they were done so without being well thought out. This is such an important feature of forum software that it really has me looking at alternatives to IP.Board. Yeah, this really dumbfounds me. I can't even imagine how the heck people would get confused about the old "View New Posts". I'd love to see some of those tickets. The old format is not too dissimilar from the Topics view. The new format is vastly different. I understand from one perspective what Invision was trying to do with "View New Content" in that they wanted to blend search results from each of the different application modules. That's a noble goal, but when the search index feature was removed, the reason for having these dumbed-down search results was negated. Now that people are converting their 2.3.x boards to 3.0.0, I've seen many Invision customers complaining about "View New Content" for various reasons. I really hope Invision finally listens to their customer base and makes the necessary changes to fix this important feature. And by "fix" I mean at minimum at least revert it to the previous functionality. Wholeheartedly agreed. ..Al
  7. Perhaps you could write this up and submit it as a mod for the Resources site? I'm sure many people would like to take advantage of this. ..Al
  8. Thank you for this, I will try it out. :) ..Al
  9. I agree, that white skin does look quite good just from that one screenshot. If Invision does not release a completed white skin of that nature (which I assume will not happen), would be nice to see someone else create a skin in that same style. :) ..Al
  10. Came right up for me as well. Impressive given there are over 1400 people using the board (although amusingly, only 45 of those are logged in!!) ..Al
  11. I get this all the time with PM notification emails. :) ..Al
  12. Great! :) I haven't used the Subscription Manager before, but now I have a reason to use it and I'm looking forward to its release.. ..Al
  13. The new website looks fantastic and has considerably more information than before. Great job!!! ..Al
  14. Some comments, I will not be upgrading my forum to 3.0.0 yet as there are a few elements that are not yet in place: - Alternative view for the search results to make them more in line with 2.3.x (bfarber said he is going to tackle this). - Some Sphinx issues need to be addressed. - Can't yet run the rebuildPosts script as it consumes mass quantities of resources on my large database and brings the rest of my site to a halt. Once these issues are addressed, you can bet I'll be upgrading. To address some of your concerns: While this is a bit inconvenient, the new underlying architecture is going to allow authors considerably more power and flexibility in designing modifications for the forum. I really look forward to what people dream up, and I have a long list of mods I want to code myself. You're right, there will always be people who are resistant to change. I've gone through several iterations of forum software now, as my site's been online since early 2001. Started with UltimateBB, then migrated to phpBB at some point, and then ultimately to Invision, which I've been running for four or five years now. Each time has been a significant change for the userbase, although I have managed to convert all the message content (and that has not been a trivial task! I had to do a lot of work to the phpBB->IPB converter to add attachment support, among other things, when first moving to IPB). Some people will bitch and moan, but sorry, that's the price for progress. Yes, this is a pain, but in my limited experience thus far it's going to be easier to skin than 2.3 was. This will probably be the one area I have to invest the most amount of time in before I can upgrade my forum. ..Al
  15. Where on the vBulletin site are they posting these screenshots? Thanks, ..Al
  16. Will be interesting to compare the two.. ..Al
  17. What happens if you are running Sphinx? ..Al
  18. I just did several searches here since I was looking for information on third-party chat software. Each time I had to manually click "Sort by Date" after the initial results came up, since the "Relevant" results were worthless, mostly because they were five freaking years old. Annoying, there definitely needs to be a way for the forum to remember your preference. ..Al
  19. Sure, if you can't even get into the ACP then you'll have to look at the files some other way. Nobody's suggesting modifying how those files are written to disk. But most of the time I'm looking around at errors in those files, I can get into my ACP just fine, and having easy access to the files (to download and delete) would make things a bit easier. ..Al
  20. I have to agree about the search results not showing enough of the post. You don't see the relevant section of the post that matches the keywords you searched for, which makes the search results much less useful. You'll have to spend considerably more time clicking each result to find what you're hunting for. Also, the search terms do not appear to be highlighted as they were before. ..Al
  21. I also want to see results by date instead of relevance as the default. I'd really like to see this added to the search form, and use either a global ACP setting or user setting to set the default value. ..Al
  22. Will post this in the bug tracker if it turns out to be a bug, just want to get confirmation first yes or no. ..Al
  23. When I click "View New Content", it often shows me threads that were new to me when I arrived at the forum, but have since read (or even posted in). Is this the correct behavior? I was under the impression that "View New Content" is only supposed to show Unread topics. For instance, In this image, you can see that the third and fourth topics show that there are no unread posts in them, yet they are still showing up in "View New Content". ..Al
