  1. I have quite a few PMs in my inbox on my forum (over 20,000). When I search my inbox using the search field in the messenger, it takes a fair bit for it to respond. Would it be possible to add Sphinx support for this query? :D Thanks, ..Al
  2. The change required to my.cnf is only a single line. You then need to rebuild the FULLTEXT index, which may take a while but it only has to be done once. I don't recall how long it took on my site (this was years ago) but I know I did it late at night. :) I ran this setup on my server for some time. I never did any performance evaluations when I made the switch, but at the time I didn't notice any changes in terms of server resources consumed or the length of time it took to do searches. I don't have as many people using my forum simultaneously as compared to your forum (daily max active users is between 300 and 400 on my forum), but the posts table is significantly larger. A search on performance penalties regarding lowering the ft_min_word_len didn't turn up anything substantial either way. I saw people state that selects would be about the same speed but inserts may be slower. How much slower, I don't know, as I didn't see anything definitive in terms of benchmarks. It would be interesting to investigate since the benefits of allowing three character searches would be nice. Trying to get meaningful search results here is often a lesson in frustration. ..Al
  3. I filed that bug report you're referring to: http://forums.invisionpower.com/tracker/issue-16654-recieving-duplicate-new-reply-notification-emails/ That's a different issue, where I'm getting more than one copy of the same email for various forum notification emails. This includes Tracker emails, PM emails, and so forth--not just "New Reply Notification" emails, so I don't really think it's related. This looks like intentional behavior that perhaps needs to be changed. ..Al
  4. Fixing these two issues would be a big improvement. Can you at least change the minimum search term to three characters? I know I was able to do this with MySQL before I switched to Sphinx. Time and time again I need to search for a three character keyword on your forum and it's aggravating that it cannot be done. This applies to the Tracker as well, since I'm often searching in there. Using Google as a crutch only goes so far when many of the forums/features are hidden if you aren't logged in. ..Al
  5. Bump -- can someone from Invision comment on this before I go file a bug? :) ..Al
  6. The "View New Content" based on your last post visit seems to work fine. I haven't gone through it carefully, but it seems to be picking up all unread posts since your last visit (same as the "View New Posts" query on 2.3.6). I've been using it here and on my site extensively. None of my users have said anything about missing posts. So it looks like it only afflicts the "Show All Unread Content" version. ..Al
  7. It sure is, I wish you guys would install it here so I could actually find things I'm looking for when searching.. ..Al
  8. I agree this would be a nice feature to have standard. Such a feature should just disable the login for the account and perhaps hide it from the memberlist, but I would not want any of the posts deleted. ..Al
  9. There is an open bug I filed about this a while back: http://forums.invisionpower.com/tracker/issue-16592-view-new-content-not-working/ ..Al
  10. Awesome! I'll be putting that to good use!! Thanks, ..Al
  11. I agree, searching on this forum is very lacking. Searching for multiple terms is pretty much a waste of time. You also cannot search for terms less than four characters, which gets in the way quite often when I'm trying to search for something here. I've also had to resort to Google to find items on this forum. I wish Invision would install Sphinx here to allow for two character searches. ..Al
  12. Yeah, it can be a pain. :) ..Al
  13. I don't have an additional password on my admin directory, but I do have it restricted to the IP addresses I use. Why is that excessive? Yes, you can easily rename the directory. ..Al
  14. That as well as renaming your admin directory and restricting it to valid IP addresses through the .htaccess. ..Al
  15. I personally like the conversation-based private threads much better than simply individual PMs. Here are two improvements I'd love to see: 1) An "advanced" search page. Yes, you can search now (and that is a godsend compared to before), but I'd really like to be able to search the title (versus post text), users included in the conversation, and for messages with attachments. A date range would be helpful also (I have PMs on my forum going back to 2002). 2) When viewing a list of conversations, the ability to sort on the various columns would make finding conversations easier. Sorting on the Starter, Topic, To, and date of Last Message would be helpful. And clicking again on the column to reverse the sort, icing on the cake. I'd actually like to see this in other places on the forum as well, but starting here would be nice. Oddly, you can sort on the "To" column now, but none of the others. Hmmmm, that doesn't actually seem to work. ..Al
  16. Yeah, I'd like to use HTTPS for all ACP activity. I already have HTTPS login enabled on my forum. .Al
  17. I pretty much have the same thing--a hidden Moderators forum, and there is sometimes overlap between discussions that take place in the Report Center and in the Moderators forum. Just like there is a special "Trash" forum for deleted messages (if you are using that feature), a special "Moderators" forum that the Report Center uses for discussions would be spiffarific. ..Al
  18. I do agree that being able to forward an individual message would be nice. You may not want to include someone in an entire conversation, but perhaps start a tangent conversation based on a single message. Also, I would very much like the ability to re-open a conversation that has been closed (because the other user deleted it) as well as being able to forward a message from a "closed" conversation. These abilities would make the conversation system a bit more flexible and user-friendly than it is now. Thanks, ..Al
  19. That would be fantastic. :) Thanks, ..Al
  20. I was wondering this as well.. ..Al
  21. I email/admin validate new accounts on my forum. My normal workflow involves searching Google and StopForumSpam.com for the username (if fairly unique), email address and IP address. I also do a location looking on the IP address. Based on this information, I can almost always catch spammers before they are validated. However, the options at the bottom of the "Member Validating Queue" do not include, "Mark accounts as Spammers". What I typically do is outright delete the accounts. This does not help Invision's new spam system since no information is passed along to Invision. Presumably I would have to click on each individual account and then click the "Flag Member as Spam" and then delete the account (please correct me if I'm wrong). Can you please add a "Mark Accounts as Spammers" option to the dropdown on the "Member Validating Queue" page? And whatever logic is necessary to make sure that those flagged accounts are sent to Invision as spammers? Thanks, ..Al
  22. These are great suggestions, and I'm running into some of these issues myself. Especially trying to figure out which reports have new comments I haven't read yet, as well as which reports I haven't even looked at. I like the idea of creating a special hidden forum, rather than duplicating all the work of essentially creating a topic view. It's bad enough having to skin each of these topic-like views so they look like a normal topic-view. :) Yes, please, also make it easier to restore posts/topics that have been deleted. A "Restore" button would be absolutely freaking terrific. :D ..Al
  23. Ahhh, good call, I didn't think about that! Just tested it and you are absolutely correct. Thank you. ..Al PS: The issue with the delete button still stands, though. :D
