My Sharona Posted November 26 Posted November 26 I upgraded yesterday to the latest greatest and now every time a thread is posted to, the "Hot! "x" replies" button is displayed. I originally thought that maybe it was a plugin or app that was causing the issue so I disabled them all and when it persisted, I thought to check my other website that has none of the same apps, plugins and sure enough, it is happening there as well. I should also mention that I tried turning it off completely in the ACP, and, again, it persists. Wasn't there once a setting where you could stipulate how many posts determined whether or not it was popular?
Marc Posted November 26 Posted November 26 There is indeed a setting for this. Take a look in System>Settings>Posting.

Adriano Faria Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Unless it has changed on IPS5, it’s a Forums app settings.

Adriano Faria Posted November 26 Posted November 26 (edited) Forums settings = ACP -> Community -> Forums -> Settings. Edited November 26 by Adriano Faria
Daniel F Posted November 26 Posted November 26 You could also use the ACP livesearch and search for popular or hot 🙂
My Sharona Posted November 26 Author Posted November 26 (edited) 8 minutes ago, Adriano Faria said: Forums settings = ACP -> Community -> Forums -> Settings. Yep, I turned that off and they still show. Also, nothing there about the ability to stipulate how many posts make a thread popular. 4 minutes ago, Daniel F said: You could also use the ACP livesearch and search for popular or hot 🙂 See above Also, can't set a Trending aspect because that is for plans above mine apparently. My Sharona Posted November 26 Author Posted November 26 (edited) Additionally, the button shows for anything within the last hour, even though, again, I turned the function off and cleared caches. Edited November 26 by My Sharona
Daniel F Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Thanks, I just noticed a few issues while testing this, which I have reported to our bug tracker. My Sharona 1

Is there going to be a fix for this soon or am I going to have to live with the Hot! button till the next release? Also, why has not this been reported by someone else before? I'm quite sure I'm not the first to upgrade to X.x.19, and I'm sure it is not solely relegated to my sites. Had I seen such a posting like this, I probably wouldn't have upgraded. My Sharona Posted November 26 Author Posted November 26 (edited) @Daniel F One last observation here to maybe help your debugging be thorough... Yesterday when I thought it was probably a caching issue (I couldn't get to the backend to clear them), I noticed that it wasn't occurring to every thread that was being posted to. In other words, the display of the button wasn't uniform. It didn't dawn on me at the time that that didn't make sense, until now. Edited November 26 by My Sharona

To illustrate the above, here is the IPS forum, showing that my Thread is not hot while the two under it are, and were last posted to over 40 minutes ago.
My Sharona Posted November 26 Author Posted November 26 (edited) One last observation here... Setting the, "Popular Now" setting to "Never" does stop new posts to threads from showing the "Hot!" button on said threads. It just took an hour for it to propagate through the system of threads already displaying the button. This however does not fix the issue, it only stops the display from showing, what is apparently, randomly. Edited November 26 by My Sharona
Stuart Silvester Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Hot topics works by storing a timestamp of when the topic is popular. When you disable the feature, that timestamp is still stored and referenced so eventually (based on what the setting previously was) the badge will get removed. We can look at making it remove much quicker when you change the setting, but that's how it's worked for years.

My memory tells me that there was a setting where one could delineate what number of posts were required to make a topic Hot. Of course I set that setting back when and can't be sure my memory is correct or not but... Before the upgrade to 4.7.19, a topic only went Hot after "x" number of replies (10 maybe?), within a certain time period. Now, every single thread that gets a reply becomes Hot (not sure that makes a topic hot, and which then, defeats the purpose of whether or not a topic is Hot). As I stated in my OP, now, it appears that the only way to set the Hot/Trending aspect is in a plan that is not within my plan anymore. So, while I may be wrong in my perception, it appears that the ability to determine how many posts make a topic Hot has been taken away from me. Edited December 5 by My Sharona

You should actually see that again in .19. This should be in Community->Forums->Settings

This should be in Community->Forums->Settings Yes, @Adriano Faria pointed that out earlier in this thread, to which I responded by posting a screen shot of what shows for me. For ease I will repost the image again: Nowhere in there is the ability to set the number of posts that determine whether or not a topic is Hot/Trending. Timeframe, yes... Number of posts, no. Now if I do a search for "Trending" in the ACP, it returns, [Platform] Smart Community Features and [Platform] Enable Trending Content. The first is not enabled for my plan and the second says essentially the same thing. Edited December 5 by My Sharona
Daniel F Posted December 5 Posted December 5 We have made an adjustment for the next release, so when one disables it, the hot badge will disappear immediately My Sharona 1

Stuart Silvester Posted December 5 Posted December 5 With Cloud plans it works a little differently. It uses Trending data to determine when something is popular. Trending data uses many more variables than just the number of replies such as the number of reactions, number of views etc.

Not every thread went hot with a single reply before the upgrade from 4.7.18. Again, if every thread that gets a single reply goes Hot, that kind of nullifies the distinction, doesn't it?

Right, there were changes (as detailed in the change log). In 4.7.18 this feature didn't work for you because it relied on Trending data that wasn't available for your legacy plan. In 4.7.19 we made some changes so plans without the real-time trending features could still utilize the hot/popular topic badge, this also included adding the setting you're screenshotting to control the time period where the topic is marked HOT if it has trended in the last X minutes. Topics that are less than an hour old or have less than 3 posts are completely excluded. I hope that clears up any confusion! Daniel F and Marc 2
