Ryo Saeba Posted November 23 Posted November 23 hello IPS, we have our forum hosted with Informanik in Switzerland and our DB is MySQL version 5.6 and you recommend to upgrade to version 8 or higher for the next IVP update. Informanik recommend we migrate our MySQL 5.6 DB to MariaDB version 10, can we upgrade to that DB and have no problems with your update soon please ? I understand that MarieDB is recommended for for speed, but I don't know if IVP software is compatible because it is on MySQL. Or is there no difference between the two types of DB for our forum to function correctly ? Also our database has InnoDB Compact tables and we want to make them Dynamic if possible without worrying about memory space. Can you update it or tell me how to proceed please ? thank you for your help and attention, anthony
Jim M Posted November 23 Posted November 23 We recommend MySQL 8 over MariaDB but MariaDB is a drop in replacement for MySQL. So long as you're running a compatible version MariaDB to MySQL. You would need to have your hosting provider convert the tables from InnoDB compact to Dynamic. This is a hosting provider responsibility to manage row formats like this.
Ryo Saeba Posted November 23 Author Posted November 23 thanks for the fast reply jim, so your recommended option is 1 but 2 works fine ? 1. i will ask if possible to run MySQL but upgrade to v8 or higher. 2. if not possible optin 1 i will ask to migrate to MariaDB 10. when the DB is updated complet the update for our IVP forum. i will ask them to sort the tables out as well. thanks, anthony
Jim M Posted November 23 Posted November 23 At this time we only support MySQL 8 (or the MariaDB compatible version of that). Any future releases would be assessed at that time.
Marc Posted November 24 Posted November 24 The software is optimised to work efficiently on mysql 8.0. There are many people who use mariadb and use it fine. There are others who are using it (particularly in a recent topic) who are finding that not to be the case. What I would do is to ask yourself, if you arent using what we specifically optimise for, why would you be doing that? Of course you may have good reason 🙂
bearback Posted November 25 Posted November 25 Recommending to use MySQL over mariadb seems to have changed, i clearly remember mariadb being recommended.

Ryo Saeba Posted November 25 Author Posted November 25 thanks for all the advice and ill ask for MySQL 8 update if possible. if not we will have to go with MariaDB 10 and take it from there. cheers, anthony

MariaDB is undoubtedly more effective. Google, Amazon and Microsoft are using this fork and these are not small companies 👀 https://mariadb.org/how-mariadb-and-mysql-performance-changed-over-releases/
