Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
Jimi Wikman Posted September 23 Posted September 23 I was so excited for V5, but now that is dampened a bit since the changes comes with removal of functionality I have been relying on, so instead of finding that out one by one, is there a list of features that are not available in V5 so we can evaluate the impact on our current setup? From what I have discovered so far, these are removed: Star Ratings (but not in Pages, but we can no longer edit after we add a value) - we must use reviews for any form of ratings. Database Relations - No way to customize the link output anymore. What else is gone in V5? Not hating this, just want to make sure I can take a proper decision since these are kind of important for some of the features I currently have on my website and if they are not there in V5, then I might have to rethink my entire setup and design to work around that.

We're still actually going through this on your topic. Its worth going through that first before ascertaining you have something missing 🙂
Jimi Wikman Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 Just now, Marc said: This is actually a bug, as mentioned in your topic For pages, yes, but the functionality is removed for all other products, correct? I can no longer set this for forums, blogs or gallery for example?
Jimi Wikman Posted September 23 Author Posted September 23 Then this would be a bug for the other products as well, then since you can't change those either? Sorry if I misunderstood you regarding the ratings.
David N. Posted September 23 Posted September 23 No HTML in the text editor (this is a huge bummer for me) Revamped horizontal navigation no longer has a submenu displayed below the main menu, and when the main item is a dropdown, you can no longer make the main item a link (clicking it just opens the dropdown) sound, Claudia999, Omri Amos and 2 others 4 1

If you log into another device, it will actually force you to confirm via email. So you still have to know the email to log in. Instagram - Also solves this the same way as above I dont actually have a login for reddit to check. It is worth noting however, that being the biggest, does not make you correct. I mean, if you want to go off size, just ask yourself how many times you see "If you get a message off me, its not me, I've been hacked!". So I guess on this one, not only will security always win over preference, it will also always win over just doing what someone else does. abobader, Jim M and Mike G. 1 2

Instagram actually has a service you can pay now for account recovery assistance if your account gets hacked, that is how much of an issue it has become. Reddit has username and email available. I would guess they are soon going to get rid of username.
All Astronauts Posted October 17 Posted October 17 Pretty sure we've had a two year (or longer) runway on this change. Was noted a loooong time ago this was coming. I've routinely pushed out messaging to users for just as long warning them. Jim M 1

Management Matt Posted October 17 Management Posted October 17 We added a deprecation notice to the ACP for this in the November 2022 release. All Astronauts 1

You said you'd provide some sort of tool to help with the change but never did. I had to pay for the email confirmation app instead which I've had on the site for over a year but I'm sure the majority just click yes to get rid of the notice. With active accounts dating back to 2004, quite alot will be using outdated email addresses and won't be able to log in once username login is no longer possible Edited October 17 by marklcfc sound 1

You wouldn't want to do an email blast, the risk of high bounce rates and increase in volume will just blacklist your email server.

Suggestion to IPS: Move "basicRelationship" into the Pages Template section and make it selectable per database. It was always a bit weird to have that set up as a theme template. Not only would it solve the problem that Jimi and I are having and allow us to convert existing installations to 5.x, it would actually be a cleaner solution (separate Pages and theme templates) and make things easier, as we wouldn’t have to fill that template with tons of IF statements to only apply to certain databases. If you really want to show off, add some nice stock templates yourself. Not just the existing CSV type, but “grid with record-image” and things like that. Jimi Wikman 1

Once V5 comes out, maybe we should compile a list of suggestions for how Pages could improve. V5 is a huge step forward, but I think there are still scaling issues when you really start working with the templates and databases. I also think taking advantage of the new templating system is something worth exploring, as it is bare bone now (as it should be for a first release). I also agree with your suggestion Ralf, but since we might want to have different designs based on the link itself, perhaps it is better to instead add the templates to the field itself? One for incoming and one for outgoing links if we add dual direction for links? I still think it is good to have it on database and then an override on the field if we want to customize? If anyone want, I could probably do a design mockup or two for things like this as a starting point for discussing improvements? Chris59 1

"We're not ripping out display name logins tomorrow and will have a whole plan in place to phase them out." Right, so our plan was: inform, give people notice, add a deprecation on the username/email log in settings in the ACP and then phase it out in v5. This is the transition process we put into action in the November release (the posts quoted were from September). We kept our word that we were not going to remove it any time soon. Here we are two years later and you're still pointing it out instead of doing something about it. If you want to keep logging in with usernames, then feel free to stick with v4. It'll be supported for a while alongside v5. I'm not really sure what else we can do. I'd suggest that you let people know you're switching to email log ins, so check your email addresses are still valid. Give a date to make the switch so people are aware of the change. Perhaps look through your email provider's bounce list to check on email addresses that regularly bounce and then DM the owner. It's pretty much all part of running a community. We can only do so much. SeNioR- and Jim M 2
