Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
broni Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I wouldn't notice since I don't care about number of my posts but some of my members are upset. This is taken from wayback machine snapshot, March 15th, 2015: If I look at my board now my post count is at 18,152 posts (36,889 posts above). I checked other members from the above list and same issue exists. I'm now with 4.0.10.2 and I'm not sure which upgrade caused it. Possibly the initial one from 3.4 to 4.x
broni Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 Since no replies here I assumed it must be something wrong about my board so I created a ticket.
Izaya Orihara Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Has all your stuff finished doing it's thing? Like the reindexing of posts and all that stuff. I find that strange based on my own experience as it seemed my post count actually increased after upgrading. Never knew why though.Would love to hear what the resolution is.
Nathan Explosion Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 A few possibilities to mull over.....Stuff has been deleted.Stuff has been moved to a forum that doesn't contribute to post count.....and then the post count has been rebuilt.
Management Lindy Posted July 18, 2015 Management Posted July 18, 2015 Please stop posting support topics in the feedback forum. Thank you.You can recount a specific member (or all members) by viewing a member profile in the AdminCP. It's quite likely the counts in v3 weren't accurate -- IPB was pretty lax.
broni Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 Recounting didn't change anything.I'd understand some difference but not half of my posts. Some other members:JRam 1,506 posts vs 24,531PeggyB 1,388 posts vs 22,040Those are just examples. Stuff has been deleted.Could be a reason.Once in a while we prune some old non-important topics.Question here then...If some topic is deleted do all members who posted there have their post count decreased?
3DKiwi Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 My post count dropped from about 40,000 to 20,000 after upgrading to ver 4. That 40,000 included pruned topics. Have to say I was a little bit miffed that my count went down. I would have expected it to stay the same.
Nathan Explosion Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 If some topic is deleted do all members who posted there have their post count decreased? If a recount is done, yes.
Marcher Technologies Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 It is most likely you never actually did a recount of posts at any point on 3.x. As alluded to above, any time a recount is performed only active posts, that is to say, posts that are still contained in the database, will be counted.... such is a limitation of the technology. In 3.x, if topics or posts had been deleted, or forums pruned, and member post counts never recounted, the post count displayed would continue to count such deleted items, in what one could argue was false inflation of the post count. Upgrading to 4 forces a post recount, and this is very likely the result of that.
broni Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 That would explain. Thanks On the other hand... Upgrading to 4 forces a post recount Some members who care about their post number would say it's unfair. Even if some of their posts had been deleted they still would like to see their real post number. Otherwise having posts number in user panel doesn't make sense at all.
Marcher Technologies Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 As Lindy stated above, 3 was amazingly lax in this regard. 4 is not. I cannot blame the software for correcting an inaccurate statistic to be accurate. You could not have avoided a recount forever, it was going to happen eventually.
ctrlbrk Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 Please stop posting support topics in the feedback forum. Thank you. You can recount a specific member (or all members) by viewing a member profile in the AdminCP. It's quite likely the counts in v3 weren't accurate -- IPB was pretty lax. I have an IPB 4 test forum. The only post that exists is the default one created during installation. I've made a few additional posts for testing, and deleted all but one of them along the way. My post count for my admin user is shown as 5. It should be shown as 2. Do I need to file a bug report? In addition, when using "find content", only two posts are shown.
broni Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 My post count for my admin user is shown as 5. It should be shown as 2From what I gather it won't change until you run recount from ACP.
Rhett Posted July 18, 2015 Posted July 18, 2015 I have an IPB 4 test forum. The only post that exists is the default one created during installation. I've made a few additional posts for testing, and deleted all but one of them along the way. My post count for my admin user is shown as 5. It should be shown as 2. Do I need to file a bug report? ctrlbrk Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 No there isn't a bug here, so no need to file a report. OK please explain it to me. There are only 2 posts, yet it says 5 posts. How is this a good idea?
Rhett Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Content counts go up as new content is posted, if you delete something it doesn't subtract from the count, you would need to re-count for that user if needed. In addition your "content" count is many different items, gallery images, replies to comments, posts and more, your "post" count is only "posts"
chilihead Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 In addition your "content" count is many different items, gallery images, replies to comments, posts and more, your "post" count is only "posts" <--- Postbit is content count but says "posts." That should be addressed it causes confusion.
Rhett Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 You're right, it does, I was referring to the post count in his image though in this case.
ctrlbrk Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Would it be possible for a mod to display the correct number of posts? To me, anything other than the correct number is confusing. So long as I can hire a mod/plug-in to get the behavior I want it's fine, otherwise this is a major issue for me.
broni Posted July 20, 2015 Author Posted July 20, 2015 I have to kind of agree with ctrlbrk. If the number is not real what's the purpose of it?
