Can it be a link directory or link manager, please?

Having a directory is a great way to show important resources. That being an important resource for many forums.

Needs permissions, moderator like features, and of course descriptions.

+1 and +1 for me working on it. :D. I prefer working on components such as a link system a lot more then a shoutbox. Tough i have no problem in doing both.

i'm rooting for a community supported universal installer mod, micheals one is good but needs key features adding and its xml isn't ipb standard. Also would like some official mod documentation template to come out of it too. :D.

Woot! Vadim even volunteered to do it! I agree. I love the Links Directory and will be sad when it doesn't work for 3.0 and will wait for it before upgrade. :D

What key features is the UMI missing? Personally, I'd like to see a custom pages mod as the next community project. ;)

I think this should be something in default IPB. You shouldn't have to work around the source coding to get a custom page to work. ;) Just my two cents on that.

 We do have plans for a few more community projects, one of which is a links system. But lets just get Tracker and Shoutbox into stable releases before we think about something else

That's good to know that it is on the list. I would like custom pages to be part of IPB :)

It may be a while though, we have to release more betas of Shoutbox and Tracker when the IPB3 versions are done, so at the moment, its twice the workload! I doubt we will be starting anymore community projects until IP.Board3 is actually released though, not much point.

A community custom page component with SEO links rather than the long winded ones they usually produce (without enabling mod rewrite) would be extremely useful... especially with inline/iframe options etc. making it sit seemless with IPB and its group permissions.

Well firstly it doesn't use default ipb xml which means hours spent constructing the xml. I would also like to see options to only reinstall a certain part ( e.g. skins, db, settings ). Also with the db reinstall all the data from the table is grabbed, stored in an array and then the table is dropped and remade, this is really not a secure way of doing it as if a error occurs all the data is lost. I think a feature like ipb's db checker should be added and for the reinstall maybe think about renaming the db to a temp db rather than the current method or just do a comparison check ( e.g. if field x is missing run query to add it, might be a bit complicated but possible while i'm thinking about it now).

Actually UMI already do that in the latest version released some days ago :P (added in 2.6.1 version and fixed a bug in 2.6.2)

The only thing non-standard about the UMI's XML structure is how it works with settings, and even then 90% of that XML is standard. The components and templates sections are IPB standard, and none of the other sections have IPB counterparts to them. It's as standard as I can make it, apart from building a tool that will scan your whole database for the changes your custom mod made to it.

We're getting a little off-topic here, but I believe the reason I did the changes to the settings XML was because IPB offers no way to export individual settings, just whole settings groups, and a mod may want to just add a few settings into an existing section.

When a link system project is made, can it use links already from Links System 3.0.0? That way everyone doesn't have to copy everything over.

Yeah that was the plan :) If that is the one Brandon made, I think we were using that as a base (think thats the only link system there is out there anyway?)

I'll sponsor you ;)

That should be built into IPB regardless or made available as a hook / plug in thats available along with board, maybe not standard built in. I think a directory would be a lot nicer then a links based system though... or depending on how you can change the views.

But it's not now, so what's the problem with doing it as a community project so that it's actually available?

i've done a invite system before and its not really that much work, in fact its more of a mod than a project. In fact if someone holla's me when ipb3 comes out i'll make it and post it up, shouldn't take longer than a day.
