More useful 'mini profile' fields
by Guest //Nathan- 1 reply
Honestly, who cares about member number? Some people care about join date and post count, but how important are these really? Why not trade them for age, gender, and country (reserving the Location for something more local). I realize there are mods to do this, but I think forums with these mods installed look and feel better. The mini profile should tell you a little more about the person, at a glance, than they do now. I think, at least, country should be a required field. Knowing some people here are from the UK greatly explains some posts that don't make any sense to me as an American. I see they're British - OK, that answers it. I don't mean to sound preju…

RSS import as single topic AND "select all" for moderator
by Guest squidfish- 0 replies
- 1.6k views
Hi there, I have 2 suggestions for the next version: 1) RSS Import as single topic What I am finding with my imported feeds is that the text is very brief...perhaps 3 lines of text and a link. It is very slow opening each topic and reading them one by one! Honestly who can be bothered when there is so little text? So my idea is that you be given the option to import each RSS feed as a single topic....and, if you go for this option, then each new feed entry is simply appended to the exisiting topic as if it was a "reply". There are different ways this can be done. A extra cool way (which would be more work of course for Matt) would be so that the title of the to…

Change skin colors, per user
by Guest //Nathan- 0 replies
- 1.5k views
What if the default skin didn't have color values, but user-inputted values? I don't understand what makes a skin a skin, but I'm looking at IPB from a user perspective, and I don't see why, for example this light blue around the posting window, couldn't be, rather than a reference to a hexadecimal color, be a reference to a variable set by default by the admin but changeable by each user. Same with the headers, it's just one color gradient to the other... why not define two colors or one color and "lighter" or "darker"? I think it would be great for each user to be able to choose what colors the board shows up in. And it sure beats having a skin for each color someo…

A New Installer
by Guest SnakEyez- 16 replies

Personally I have been very happy with Invision Board as a product, but the ugprading procedures are about as bad as they come. The instructions users see is: "Upload all the files contained in the "upload" folder of the download distribution EXCEPT conf_global.php" I hate to sound like this but this is something I really expect from a free product and not a paid one. I mean is it really necessary to update every single file, images included, every single time there is an update from one version to the next (ie: 2.1.3->2.1.4). I just think there could be something done to make the process run a little smoother and easier.

Safe HTML
by Guest shazam521- 1 reply
- 1.8k views
I would like to say that this suggestion is to allow HTML to be enabled, but to deny HTML that hasn't been accepted by the Administration as 'SAFE'. If I rember rightly, phpBB (free software) has a feature that is very much the same as this request. I would like to see however that it would be even better if the HTML was able to be set by member group/Permission Masks. So for exameple say that the admin's allow all members to use the <b> - <i> - <center> - <img> tags, that would appear in a area that allows "All members to post using these tags". In another area, you set that only Administration members can post using (ONLY FOR EXAMPLE) <…

Bad Behavior
by Guest Ipstenu- 4 replies
- 2.6k views
I've spent a couple days fighting spam on a wiki and a blog and finally came up with using Bad Behavior to stop the dipsticks from bot-spamming. Then after reading about someone's DDoS recently, I wondered if this would be applicable for IPB. The basic concept of Bad Behavior is that it's a PHP script to prevent spambots from getting to your site based on their HTTP requests. On top of that, it's designed to stop any malicious software, be it spam, a a search bot or system crackers. And at first blush, I think that may be helpful for some people. The 'generic' version takes away the logging ability, but it's still possibly helpful. I've hesitated at installing it …

[REQ] Completely change skin caching/reversion behaviour on upgrade
by Guest rct2·com- 0 replies
- 1.6k views
There seems to be many people struggling with upgrades in the skinning domain. They lose customizations when they choose 'revert' on the upgrade pages. I really don't understand at all why that is offered as an option on upgrade! They don't revert, but then report bugs after upgrading because they don't have some necessary upgraded skin bits. They cannot fix this because they don't have a default skin to use instead. They produced their custom skin by editing the default and/or have deleted it. Long ago, they moved boards about in their filespace (or between servers), and folder permissions stop the any of the skins from recaching properly. I'd like to suggest the followi…

[REQ] Optimize the CSS cache
by Guest rct2·com- 0 replies
- 1.7k views
THere are an awful lot of blank lines and /* */ comments in the default .css cache files. This is all inherited from the database version. In addition, in Skin Manager, I like to add my own comments when skinning so I can see where I have changed default CSS. It would be good if these files were optimized when they are produced so that they have any 'bloat' removed. There is code in v2.1.4 that isn't called as far as I can see which *almost* does the job. It optimizes the database versions rather than the files, but I don't see any buttons in AdminCP to make it run.

Calendar Title Breadcrumb
by Guest MixPix- 1 reply

Hi all, I have a forum with about 10 different calendars, It would be really like to be able to see which calendar I'm in by looking at the navigation breadcrumb. It's kinda annoying having to scroll down to the bottom to make sure I'm in the right calendar. Example: Forum > Calendar > "Calendar Title" > January 2006

Okay I don't know if I am going to make any sense, I was racking my brain to even remember this Suggestion. But anyways, I would love to see a "Export Document" feature added. I like to be able to have things easy at my finger tips, and would love to be able to download a members group and have it at my finger tips if a member ask's "Why wont you let me to this"... I would love to see a exportable verison of having settings exported to something like HTML, or a Excel Document. It would be great to have it at my finger-tips, instead of me having to type it up

"All Topics" View
by Guest //Nathan- 3 replies

Yeah, multiple forums are great for organization, but it's often said that a new board should not have too many forums, so as to appear busier than it is. But if you do that, when the forum takes off, the admin has quite a task on their hands, organizing everything. Why not make all the forums from the get-go, as I did... and then have a view where the member can just see all the topics from all the forums in one place? Kind of like "Today's Active Topics" but not just limited to "Today" - it would go ALL the way back. EITHER... The admin could decide what forums' topics appear in this view. Or multipe views could be set up, so one could view all topics from a th…

Member's Last Post icon
by Guest • Jay •- 0 replies
- 1.5k views
It would be quite helpful if there was an link next to topics that a member posted in which would take them directly to their last post in a topic. I find the icon which goes to the last read post doesn't work overly great for me for some reason, whether it's because the feature doesn't like members who are using several different computers, or the fact that I lose my train of thought over a topic (given the amount of topics I read & correspond in over various boards, this is a common occurance, and makes "catching up" a pain in the butt when I can't locate my last remark). Edit: Oh, I know! link it to the # in the replies pop-up window that one clicks to see w…

Increase security on next version(s) IPB 2.1.x
by Guest aymelek- 22 replies
- 7.4k views
I think that since version 1.3 i am applying third party patches to enhance security on the forum software. Some are simple sollutions and some require a bit more. Therefore i would like to make the following suggestions and comments.. First of all , the greatest danger to IPB is the board admin him or herself. It easy to be sloppy on security and post your password or sent admin passwords in PM sytem to new admins for example or post the FTP codes in admin lounge, After all it was postedn in a PM or posted in an adminlounge so who can see? You could be suprised who sees :) Treat your search engine bots as admins and u can read back on google...or else. Also man…

I downloaded the file, but I didn't upload anything besides the stuf in the upgrade folder. Is this upgrade complete? :charles:

Chargeback protection
by Guest Baxter_jb- 5 replies
- 2.4k views
Hey I just wanted to throw this idea out there. In the past 3 years since accepting subscriptions I've had a fair number of chargebacks through paypal. What I'd like to see implemented is if the customer subscribes using an email other then the one they signed up with that it makes them verify there purchased email before activating the subscription. Of course this would be settable via the acp per gateway.

Tools and Settings -> Search -> Where is it
by Guest Stuart Elliott- 1 reply
- 1.7k views
When you're in Tools and Settings looking for that illusive configuration option, you type in your little keyword as normal, and it brings up a list of config options that hopefully match your request, a-la: What I would like is for it to tell me WHERE those options are, so I don't have to go through that rigmarole again, a-la It took me over half an hour to find just those five items, because they were shown in the wrong order in the list as they appear in the various configuration screens.

IP Link
by Guest Michael P- 4 replies

In posts the posters IP address is a link, however this is not the case in the users online list, which means having to copy an IP and paste it into the ModCP via UserCP, which is a bit of a trail just to lookup an IP. Suggestion: Make it a link as it is in the posts. :)

Skin / Mod Patching System
by Guest InvisionCube- 0 replies
- 1.7k views
Since IPB moved from files to db bits for skins, it's no longer a viable option if a skinner makes an error in a skin or a modder makes an error in a particular piece of code to just make another file available for download. So, I'm thinking a skin / mod patch system where a skinner could export only x, y, and z skin bits into a single XML file. The user would download the patch xml file and apply it via a Patch page in the ACP, with perhaps a drop-down listing the skins, to select the relevant skin from. Not sure I've explained it that well, but it made sense when I conceived it!

"Hot" replication....
by Guest jethro- 5 replies

Any chance of having a look at possible real time db backup to a second "hot" board, i.e one that sits there and doesn't get used unless the production site goes down through whatever errors? This would just add a touch of the warm fuzzies for commercial companies.

It would be nice if you could force certain ip ranges or domains to go to manual approval where all else register using the email response.
