  1. Hi,

    A suggestion:

It would be very helpful if buttons appearing in the header (specifically, the sign-in button) could have its own colour controlled separately to Primary Button Colour. It is common (almost standard) for backgrounds to be white (or a very pale colour). Whereas, headers are most often darker. I'd like to be able to place a white sign-in button in the header, but white buttons disappear against white backgrounds in other parts of the forum. Conversely,  a dark sign-in button looks crap in the header and is more easily missed.

Of course there are inevitable compromises to be made in these systems. But header buttons are quite different to other Important Buttons - they require their own styling. Yes, I could create my own header, but I'm trying to avoid this.

    Thanks.

Please let us know if you do find a bug of course 😄

Will do!🙃 I've not had time to go back and re-test, but I still do not have explanation for why the feature color would not copy across - I tried multiple times. And yes, with forums, not categories. I'll re-test later today.

  3. Hmm.

First, I think I might have boobed with regard to forums turning to categories. My guess is that, somehow, I clucked on 'Copy Setting Value' for forum type for category, rather than 'use a feature color', so ended up changing all forums to categories. That's a probable oops, and no bug.

Second, I can now set a feature colour and I have no idea why I could not before. I certainly tried setting from a forum, and not a category. I'll do some more testing later. I'm perplexed.

  4. Hi,

I've tried this both with a Cloud installation, and a self-hosted test forum. Bot forums using the most recent release.

Cloud: tired setting a colour for one category - I could detect no change. I tried setting a color for a forum - this worked. However, I cannot copy the values ('Use' or 'Color') to other forums. I can disable the setting and revert to standard, but even this seems hit and miss. I can set a colour for each forum independently. But I cannot fathom the precise conditions for the behaviour - it seems inconsistent.

Sometimes, when I re-enable Use a Feature Color, it reverts to the first color I tried.

Self-hosted: I cannot set a feature color at all.

Yes: I do save the two settings and select 'save' at the foot of the page too.

Further: on the Cloud installation, one of the times I attempted to disable Use a Color Feature (and apply the setting to all forums), all forums were converted to categories. Fortunately, this is not yet a production site, but will be in a few days time.

I do have one addon installed, but it only affects how usernames are displayed - it seems unlikely that this is the cause. Irrespective, I fully disabled the addon - there was no discernible change in behaviour.

It does not work that way, unfortunately. You would ne looking at the way in which quotes are built, not anything to do with redirects. If you wanted to pursue this, you really would need someone who develops converters

I think I understood that. Why is the link data in headers not retained (and modified by the converter if necessary) so that the redirect system can take care of it? Or have the redirect system recognise header links and convert as they would with any other internal link?

It's OK. We are just going to around in circles. I don't possess the coding knowledge for a detailed discussion. But from layman's perspective, this seems like a gaping hole in the conversion system.

Thank you @Stuart Silvester and @Marc Stridgen

    Edit:

37 minutes ago, Stuart Silvester said:

That wouldn't be anything related to how the redirects work. They work after the conversion based on the URL.

The quotes are updated during (or immediately after) the conversion in the `fixPostData()` method.

I've just reread the above - I am not sure if I properly understand it. Are you suggesting that quote header links will work? Just looking for clarification.

    Thanks.

Quote headers will not link to the original content following a conversion, that isn't something our SMF Converter has support for.

Thank you for the reply, Stuart.

Don't you think headers should link back? Quotes are not very useful if they do not properly reference the source. I am really surprised by this omission - it is a pretty basic function, and surely should form part of the redirect system.

  7. Thanks, @Stuart Silvester That's a relief.

And what about quote headers? For migrated content, they appear to not link back to the origin post. Is that taken care of too once we have migrated to Cloud?

Oh. And does this work for user IDs too. Because, I note, old user IDs do not match new, post migration.

  8. Hello,

Can someone reassure me about how redirects work after we have completed migration from SMF to Invision Cloud? At a staging platform, quote headers no longer link to the original content. Nor are body links reformatted to the Invision structure, so are useless. Are these things somehow taken care of by Invision redirects? I understood that redirects are part of the migration process, but I cannot now locate what I read before.

Surely, migration would not break all quote headers and internal (body) links to posts, threads and user accounts?

    Thanks.

  9. Scrub that. I thought it seems that it was temporary error. It is up now.

  10. I think this is just what I am looking for, @Michael.J

I note that there is a 'Can add new entry' permission: I assume this is per group - yes?

I also note there is a 'New content approval' option in general settings: does the group permission or approval setting take precedence?

Ideally, I'd like to allow some groups the ability to add news unimpeded, and news items submitted by all other groups to be queued for approval.

What are you trying to offer with the Downloads app?

    Hi @opentype

The forum admins and I are IPS neophyte. So we are just feeling our way around. I do not yet know exactly how we will use 'Downloads' - one of the admins uploaded a few images there and I noticed that there are no thumbnails.

On 4/12/2023 at 8:38 AM, opentype said:

It is usually used for software, videos and things like that. That’s why “screenshots” makes sense as representation of the content.

Hmm. I understand what you are saying, but to a new user of the software, it does not make much sense. I still think 'thumbnail' would be more readily understandable. But no biggie - I was looking for an explanation and I now have it.

On 4/12/2023 at 8:38 AM, opentype said:

If you add images as downloads, then it would be a different story. And the software can’t always create screenshots.

It was just unexpected behaviour. If thumbnails are automatically generated in other contexts, then it is reasonable to expect similar in the Downloads area. I assumed that I either missed a setting, or there was a bug or a (Cloud) server glitch.

On 4/12/2023 at 8:38 AM, opentype said:

For example, I have a website where the downloads consist of images, but they are huge TIF files put into ZIP archives. It would be pretty much impossible for the server to generate thumbnails from that. So, a user field to add some representative images makes perfect sense.

Again, I understand what you are saying. And, again, it is inconsistent behaviour, so caused me some confusion. But thank you for the explanation. Appreciated.

If you’re dealing with regular or smaller images, look at the Gallery app.

Will do. We were intending to use the native Gallery solution, but it seems there might be better options. Now that you have prompted me, I'll look into it. Thanks.

  12. Oh. So, 'add screenshots' means 'add a thumbnail image'. That's less than intuitive.

It would make more sense for thumbnails to be generated automatically for images (or provide the option), and change 'add screenshots' to 'add thumbnail image' (or some such).

  13. Hi,

I'm testing an addon and need to review differences between what a logged in members see and what guests see. Edited content and comments are delayed for guests. The delay is many minutes - maybe 10 or more (I've not timed it). This is slowing up testing and was rather confusing at first. Or, is this not how it should be and there is some kind of problem?

    Thanks.

  14. I just found this:

But it is incompatible with Invision 4.7 and the author appears to have been inactive for well over 2 years. I would not have thought it would be that difficult for someone to recode, and at nearly 300 downloads for the original version, it is probably worth the effort.

Perhaps you could try approaching one of Marketplace developers here to see what they would charge.

  15. @Deborah Engelmajer I suppose what you need is a method to sticky/pin the post, and not have its date changed. Perhaps that would avoid the potential problems flagged by @Luuuk

Or, a work around (of sorts), is to create some a dummy post per day (on an admin forum) - or however many you might need for your purposes - and use one these which predates the others you wish to merge. Then quote the out-of-sequence post in your dummy (merged) post so that it appears as the thread opening post. Obviously, you will have the wrong member listed as the thread starter, but the posts will appear in the order you require and you will be quoting the post you need as the seed post. Just make sure you have plenty of dummy posts for when you need them.

The above works going forward. If you need to do this retroactively, find a useless old thread (by and admin from an admin forum) and strip out the first post to edit and use as your seed post.

Edit: Further, by using an admin post to quote your seed post like this, you can an add an explanation of what you have done and why.

How so?  Anything that would display PII via the UI is marked as no-cache/no-store.  So the local browser and/or the CDN would not cache it.  (It would not make sense to cache pages anyway.)

You don't "accidentally" download a copy of the database, etc.  You would have to intentionally take that data with you.

I am not database administrator or developer. So, if you tell me there is no situation where IPS service centre personal will need to access the database of a Community hosted in the EU (or no copy of data access/viewed is stored/copied locally), I will take that at face value. As I have written several times already, I am asking the question because of the article I read and linked in my opening post.

  17. 1 hour ago, Charles said:

US or EU either way we're not randomly downloading your data to our laptops and wandering around 😀

Anything we do need to do stays inside AWS systems.

Hmm. That's not the point. No one - and certainly not me - was implying that you are or would 'randomly download data to your laptops'. It is to do with data being 'stored' in the US. The mere act of accessing data will create copies locally. This creates issues with regard to the GDPR because the European Court of Justice has declared that there are inadequate safeguards in the US relating governmental agencies accessing personal data.

I am not suggesting that there is an imminent legal threat against anyone using IPS Cloud services in the US, let alone the EU. But the problems raised by Schrems II are unresolved. And when I read the article I linked earlier, it suggested that having service centres outside of the EU accessing data hosted in the EU could be problematic.

I am just trying to better understand the lay of the land, that's all.

  18. 21 minutes ago, Charles said:

If you choose our EU option, all of your data is in the AWS Paris region.

It is possible one of our employees outside the EU can access the data if you submit a support ticket or something like that. But then that is no different than if you were traveling outside the EU and logged into your own AdminCP.

Even in that scenario, the data is still housed in the EU. Someone viewing your site from anywhere in the world (that's literally what the Internet is for 😀) has nothing to do with GDPR.

Viewing the front end: of course that would be no problem. What I mean is, in the furtherance of servicing the website, data is inevitably transferred. It depends upon what data is being accessed. For example, if there was corruption data or setting with tables in the database which store usernames, email addresses, etc., this might involve the transfer of PII out of the EU to the US. I think the linked article (if I understand it correctly) explains the potential problem.

In any case, reading between the lines, Invision servicing of EU-hosted Communities is performed from the US. Which is all I wished to know.

    Thanks.
