How does auto-save actually work?

One of my favorite features of IPS is the auto-save when writing a post and coming back to the whole "Your previous content has been restored" message.

How does this actually work?

Does it rely on a browser's cache and or cookies? Or is it literally saving it to the server? It works great for me, but not for some of my users.

Before I take a deep dive into why it's not working for some users I was wondering if anyone actually already knows the answer.
