A facebook/linkedin like wall as a starting page?

Hello Community,

I wonder if it is possible to set IPB up in a way that the starting page is a wall like application as on facebook, linkedin or buddypress?

I know there is the social stream plugin by headstand, but despite the fact that it seems to get no updates, I think it works differently?

I am looking for a way to not only have the content from the different parts of the community as a stream, but also give the users the possibility to post something in the stream. Like give a short update, ask for help, post a content piece etc. Have it more community like and interactive and not so "forum-like" on the front page.

Can this be achieved? Or is there a plugin, that I haven't found?

I do not get it. Maybe I have set up the activity stream wrong, but it basically is only a way to find new content posted somewhere. But it has not feature to directly post in the activity stream, eventually get a comment on that post, post a media directly into the stream and get a comment on it etc. Or do I oversee something?

I am looking more like a combination of the Activity Stream (show new content), individual posts to the stream (like the Status Updates, but maybe enhanced with file posts etc and the "answer to status updates" think by Mike John. A more interactive front site (the status update is only possible through the widget right?). Guess is not possible...

I didn’t say you would get an identical Facebook clone. But it’s the closest you can get.

And if you have status updates turned on, you can indeed directly post in them as requested.

Thanks for your help. Maybe I have set up something wrong or we are misunderstanding each other. On the /discover/ Stream there is no "Add Status for me" and my group permission as admin allow me to post status updates ;) Maybe a them issue?

It’s a widget. You can drag it above your discovery feed and have the updates show below or turn that off and have them as part of everything in the feed.

Again, not identical to Facebook, but also not too far off.

Personally, I don’t use status updates at all. While I’m sure people would use it and post more, you get exactly the crappy social media feeds – unstructured, tons of repetitions, the loudest gets the most attention …
I rather force people to find the right spot to post first and by that, create useful structured content over time.

Good remark. I am just trying to optimize after feedback from a Friends & Family Phase on the site.

May I ask again. You mean the "Recent Status update"-widget to drag above the activity stream? But it shows the last status updates right? And also has a more limited editor (like no adding of media items.

Yes.

Yes, but that is a number you can set to 0 or you can kill that output entirely with a little theme edit. Adding the posting editor is what matters, since that is what you wanted I guess.

Ha, funny yes. The editor seems to be a different one though to the one you get when you go on a profile of someone and post there, e.g. you seem to have no "post files" option etc. Any idea why?

What you want is not possible.  The closest you'll get are the choices you already know about: Activity Streams, Social Stream by @HeadStand, or Stuatus Update widget.

This has been requested ever since Activity Streams came out.  IPS had explained before that AS are for content discovery, not for interaction.

Thank you for your post.

I'll never understand the one size fits all mentality. We live in a world where people demand OPTIONS.

Why is it that as a paying forum owner I don't have the OPTION of allowing someone to upload a file, video or more in a status update?

Did ONE forum owner decide he/she didn't need it and then it was not developed for anyone else?

I would love to sit in the decision making room at IPS and discuss the wonderful world of enabling user OPTIONS.

What a concept.

Nothing about that whole posts makes any sense. You assert and suggest that things are a certain way (which they are not), only to criticize this version you just made up. Not to mention the terrible condescending tone of telling your business partner (IPS) – a professional software company doing this for over a decade – they are too stupid to understand what an option is. (Which of course is also untrue.)

One thing that I've been personally investigating is combining IPS as forums with WordPress, especially now that 4.3 is almost out with built-in WordPress authentication.  There are quite a few social network plugins for WordPress that are quite nice.
