Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
CheersnGears Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 But is that not the exact same output as the activity stream? All this is showing is activity sorted by date.No it isn'tLook at the difference between the first link and the activity stream on the same system.
Management Charles Posted March 1, 2015 Management Posted March 1, 2015 No it isn'tLook at the difference between the first link and the activity stream on the same system. Well the two reference the same exact data. The activity stream shows the actual new content of the items whereas view new content shows the updated container. That's really the only difference.
CheersnGears Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Well the two reference the same exact data. The activity stream shows the actual new content of the items whereas view new content shows the updated container. That's really the only difference. One is nice and clean, one isn't. A visitor isn't going to care that Bobo did this, or William did that. A visitor is going to want to see what the latest topics being discussed are.Activity stream is also buried under a menu item where View New Content is right out in the open.
Management Charles Posted March 1, 2015 Management Posted March 1, 2015 So are we just talking about formatting and presentational issues? If so that is something we can of course improve.

AtariAge Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 I'd like to see "View New Content" exactly where it is for guests as it is for people who are logged in. The Activity Stream is formatted in a completely different manner, and the side bar on the left is also different. I want guests to see the exact same "View New Content" presentation that is available to those who have logged in, except the criteria is a bit different (most recently updated topics for the forum, versus stuff I haven't seen yet if I'm logged in).
Management Charles Posted March 1, 2015 Management Posted March 1, 2015 Yes I understand what people are saying but you are all after "recent activtiy" not the View New Content system which is based on a user's behavior. I realize we are mincing words but from a technical side it matters
CheersnGears Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Yes I understand what people are saying but you are all after "recent activtiy" not the View New Content system which is based on a user's behavior. I realize we are mincing words but from a technical side it matters If you want to call it recent content or whatever for guests, that's fine. But the Activity Stream is going to be mostly irrelevant to a user who is visiting the site for the first time. What we're asking for, I think, is for VNC to continue to work for guests as it always has, regardless of the name.
Management Charles Posted March 1, 2015 Management Posted March 1, 2015 VNC "as it always has" for guests is really the activity stream. It simply shows activity by date. Unless I am overlooking something?
Kirill N Posted March 1, 2015 Author Posted March 1, 2015 Yes I understand what people are saying but you are all after "recent activtiy" not the View New Content system which is based on a user's behavior. I realize we are mincing words but from a technical side it matters Actually you're right, If you select "Topics" in activity stream it's basically VNC. Except it's not even working properly - http://community.invisionpower.com/activity/?type=forums_topic&change_section=1
CheersnGears Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 VNC "as it always has" for guests is really the activity stream. It simply shows activity by date.I'm not sure how we can be disagreeing this much on this item. The results are not the same. VNC shows me the topics with the latest replies. A/S shows me the latest posts, sometimes multiple posts in the same topic. A/S can be twiddled into position to show me the results in the VNC format I'm asking for, but not without 3 additional clicks to get it there.

I am sure we could implement a default view option for Activity Stream. Actually "container" vs "content" view on the All Activity option might be very nice.
ram108 Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 It would be very helpful if you could all provide specific examples in a separate topic of critical features you feel are missing. Thank you. Isn't that the activity stream? VNC and activity stream are not really the same. We want this page: http://community.invisionpower.com/new-content/ visible to guests. That's really it... Yes. Just let everybody to open VNC link

Management Charles Posted March 1, 2015 Management Posted March 1, 2015 Okay, but you'll still need to unbury it from under a menu. Oh I agree. The Activity Stream has the potential to be a really cool feature. We plan on tons of enhancements to it.
CheersnGears Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Oh I agree. The Activity Stream has the potential to be a really cool feature. We plan on tons of enhancements to it.If you can make A/S have a default view (perhaps for guests?) that looks like the current VNC and unbury it so that a new visitor would see it, then I would be fine with it and move on.
NewRockRabbit Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I appreciate that there is the intention in the Feature Plan to merge VNC and AS, but this is kinda urgent. Currently the user experience Guests coming to a IPB 4.0 site is poor. Unlike 3.4 (and all other major forum software) there is no VNC (or equivalent) option for Guests. If the Guest manages to find A/S via the More tab, they are then confronted with a very unfriendly list of content. Furthermore on this IPB site, a Guest will more often than not get an error message if the click on one of the A/S options, eg topics.Personally I think the priority on this feature needs to be increased from 'coming soon' to 'next up' just to get us back to where we were with 3.4.

rgf100 Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I guess a direct link to activity stream topics would work for users not logged in (NB - this does not mean guests. Plenty of regulars don't stay logged in). But then you want to shift them back to VNC once they're logged in. Bang, inconsistent experience. The VNC / AS merger might fix that, but frankly I'll believe it when I see it. Honestly, stuff like this is hugely frustrating. There's a clear reduction in quality of experience for users. If Activity Stream is a replacement, put it in the same place.

If Activity Stream is a replacement, put it in the same place. A direct link to Activity Stream wouldn't really sort this issue.1. A new user to your forum would be baffled by all the Activity Stream choices.2. Activity Stream is really slow and/or throws up error messages. The old VNC for guests worked great and was simple; why it isn't available in 4.0 is frankly bizzare. There haven't been many complaints about this omission yet but that maybe because it doesn't effect Admins or Members who are logged in. But I think it will cause a major reduction in converting guests to members because guests will arrive at a new 4.0 site, been unable to find the current content and simply leave in frustration.I won't be upgrading to 4.0 till this is sorted or a mod becomes available.
AtariAge Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 I won't be upgrading to 4.0 till this is sorted or a mod becomes available.Same, and I don't want a mod, this needs to be part of IB.Board. I'm also waiting for performance and other issues to be sorted out, so probably will hold off until 4.1.
NewRockRabbit Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 Same, and I don't want a mod, this needs to be part of IB.Board. I'm also waiting for performance and other issues to be sorted out, so probably will hold off until 4.1. I agree this shouldn't be a mod but I am losing faith that this will ever be addressed by IPB. Reading some of the IPB posts in this thread I'm not even sure that IPB realise the extent of this problem.
Joel R Posted May 14, 2015 Posted May 14, 2015 If they paired this up with a first-party Social Groups, I can see this turning into a very cool new IP.Social.
Frank P Posted June 28, 2015 Posted June 28, 2015 How do I let guests view new content? Not sure if this is the same, but my guests (when I go in as guest) can't seem to view the forums when going to the site. There is this message: The page you are trying to access is not available to guests, but may be available if you sign in. I see I have guests viewing the forums and I assume if this is what I see they see the same thing. I have all guest permissions set that guests can view forums, but can't post. How do I fix this?
