When will we see IPB3?

I would back-up all my data before the upgrade so if there are any problems I can go back to the old version until I can get the new one working if there are problems.

This is what a testforum (that IPB does allow you to have as long as it is an inactive site) is for. ;)

My server is a beast, so i never have to worry. Make changes, more changes the better.

Now, that's a good attitude to have!

I'm about performance although IPB pulls a lot its still pretty fast. If they add on more then so be it. I think they are smart enough to know how to balance performance and speed.

I'm more worried about all my current mods not working. And having to get someone to rewrite them and pay them again!

Luckily for me, the only two mods I really use are reputation (which will be in IPB 3) and Unreal Portal. Speaking of which... I've been meaning to ask, is Invision planning on enhancing their portal? It'd be nice if I could just use that if it had more customization features.

Quite honestly, there is a modification (component, really) that I've been working on, but I've put it on the back burner until the release of IPB3 due to the changes in how things are coded. To me, there really is no point to develop the component I was working on, and have to re-code it once IPB3 is released.

Having said that, take your time on it! I'd rather wait for a secure product than be rushed for a buggy one.

I use a lot of mods less then with 2.2 though. One of the mods I use a lot which actually does not consider it self a mod as its also a stand alone script is going though a new version as well.
I do hope the 2 work to gather.

I'm more worried about converting over all our 2.3 skins to 3.0 skins. Hopefully that won't be a huge pain in the ass, because we have 35+ skin sets.

Well, Bryan, unfortunately I think you should be prepared for a bit of work ahead of you.

No 2.3 skins will work, even remotely, in IP.Board 3. In the process of moving to semantic (x)HTML and compressing all of the skin templates as much as possible, as well as adding all of the template plugin support we've blogged about, skins will not be anything even remotely resembling IP.Board 2 templates.

I figured that with skins and I do also have a lot.
it will not be to big a deal but I may wait until 3 comes out to start distributing my skins.
the 2 I have done I will remake when 3 comes out.

I am working on a third one so I may just put that one on hold for now.

I knew this would be the case, but.... Oy. :P We have 7 custom made skins (plus an additional 2 that are in development) on our forum. Re-writing all of those is going to be such a pain. :P

Ouch. This is why I wish you guys would also provide a dark default skin.

Well at least the new templating system will be easier to work with, right? :D

Ouch. I just hope I have time away from school to convert my skin very quickly after the release of a beta or something. Either that or it looks like I might be paying someone to skin my forums for the first time...

How extensive will the template changes from 2.x to 3.0 be? Will it be easier to convert them, or is a rewriting mandatory.

Birger :)

The changes are very extensive, the entire skin has been recreated from the ground up. The template system itself has also changed, so that most views are now represented by a single template, rather than lots of little templates as was the case with IPB2.

In other words, the changes are extensive enough to the point that converting skins won't be a simple matter for novice skinners. In many cases it will be easier to just start the skin over.

CSS class names are entirely different, the xHTML is entirely different (e.g. tables only used for tabular data), the template functions are compressed, and we use template plugins to accomplish things previously done in the source files unnecessarily. The look of many pages is entirely different. The changes are quite extensive.

When will we see IPB3?

Big Hint: When you see this company forum upgrade, a week after that ;)

Very possibly longer than a week after ;)
