So the "Prepare for v5" feature said to post here if we have questions.

I don't recall seeing anywhere that it was mentioned the status updates feature was going to be removed. While our community doesn't use them a lot, they're still something people want. Are there plans for something to replace it or is it just going away forever? If this was mentioned somewhere else I'd appreciate a link to the topic.

Hi @Arthmoor,

The team have mentioned that status updates will be removed and once you upgrade, the status section simply won't exist anymore.

There is a topic open in the Beta Testing club though to discuss what happens to published status updates though.

This warning appears for me even though I disabled status updates as a setting.

Can I get rid of it? If yes, how?

Most likely you have some old status updates in the database from before you disabled it.

If you're not using it you can ignore the warning. Any existing status updates will simply be deleted when upgrading to v5.

Turns out there were 3 of them. They're now gone and so is the warning.

Yes, I also noticed this when I checked out that ACP-page.

This is a real shame, and I don't understand why they would remove this feature from a "social" platform. 😞

Sad to see this going.  I hope someone makes a third party for it.  I know my community loves the status updates.

Removing status updates is a horrible idea. One of THE WORST. Status updates can help keep the community active.

Sorry to hear you believe this to be the case. In our experience, it can actually do quite the opposite, as it moves conversation away from your core community

So you've just gone ahead and decided for us what our "core community" is supposed to be? 🤨

Why remove a feature that's available in one way or another in most other forum software? Will you also be removing PM's in a future update?

Get that something like this is quite frustrating to those who use it but we simply do not just remove a feature because we feel like it. We do extensive research on our clients' usage, how the feature is being used, and trends in the space. Simply because other software has it doesn't mean it makes sense for our software to have it. We also have finite resources to spend on a development feature so at some point something has to give.

Many third party authors have expressed interest in filling the void we are leaving so you may be able to keep the feature. You will want to research that to see if any have committed to it for version 5.

Will you also be removing PM's in a future update?

Status updates are different than private messages.

How do you plan on handling this if the status updates are removed from the database during the upgrade process?

The upgrade will delete this user generated content...?

We have "a few" status updates that would get removed....  terrible :(.

Thanks Matt for setting the record straight :).  I was seeing some confusion.  Hopefully a 3rd party solution will come along.

I actually kinda see your point now. I do wonder if maybe we can still comment on people's profiles.

It doesn't seem so. At least I find no possibility in my test environment.

You cant. That is essentially what the status updates were

I understand the frustration. It's a common issue with each major release. Invision can't always predict which features will be a success or what might need removing, like the social media promotion. I relied on statuses until 4.7, something I believe a third-party developer could easily pick up. It's promising to see that @Daniel F has added it to his consideration, which is the best scenario.

The removal of physical products that require dispatching is similar to this situation. It's disappointing that the create menu was removed simply because a few people didn't like it, including a higher-up member of the Invision team. It was super convenient, and instead of adding a way to hide or turn it off, it got removed. Some things make sense to forget, but a lot of v4.7 feels like a roll of the dice. As long as third-party developers can pick up the slack, I personally have no issue, but I can express my disappointment.

The status feature had a really annoying bug where responding to one would cause the page to hang, and it took ages to fix. It makes me wonder if there was a point, considering it's now removed. I'm impressed with v5, though disappointed too. I hope these concerns can be tackled closer to the full release. Provided Invision doesn't leave us without key features we once used, with no way of filling the gap, I can explore other means. The important thing is to feel listened to, understood, and not ignored.

I know Matt has hinted at a possible small app to move profile comments, fingers crossed, here’s why I’m hoping something comes along…

On my main largest community, running for about 25 years and very quiet these days, I have status updates/comments on member profiles posted to and from beloved members of my community who have sadly since passed away.

Although most of the site’s profile comments are probably lower value that would be missed far less, my members will be very upset about the loss of sentimental content from old friends no longer with us.

I don’t want to upgrade to v5 unless there is some way to preserve them, besides manually copying and pasting somewhere like a special forum or into perhaps into Pages. I have less than 10 members marked as In Memorial group members, I’d really like to preserve this valued content in some way.

Will IPS consider an option during the upgrade to gracefully remove this data?

I don't see the need the save this data - especially for images and attachments - if IPS is going to officially deprecate this feature

Yes, at some stage we'll put that into an upgrade step as an option.

That's too bad and suddenly blindly upgrading and learning the changes isn't easy, but alot more is easier than harder.
