I find the mention system great, although there may be members that dont like this feature, or I have users in a certain usergroup that I dont want to allow this to use. From my understanding, the system really dont have any possibillities to restrict certain use or allow individual members to opt-out this.

 

May be an idea in a future release?

It’s part of the regular notification system. So the user can indeed opt-out (of the notification via notification list and or email) and the admin can set the default for new registrations.

You can disallow user groups to be listed in the mentions list.
