Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
markopolo2002 Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Guys, I know this could just be a test from your end, but I'm really not feeling the layout of the HTML emails - it's FAB that we have this functionality, but the layout really does need a little work me thinks. The lines really should go for a start, and better positioning of the logo would be good and a little pet hate of mine is all the truncating of URL's, I appreciate why you do it, but hate the look of it, I'd much rather see the entire URL :) Cheers Marko
markopolo2002 Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 And the header doesnt show on the iphone :)
TracyIsland Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Hi - I guess you are one of the lucky ones! But did you see the IPS blog update? It shows an example of the format of the html email. I think that sample is pretty stylin'. - Brian
markopolo2002 Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Yep, the one in the announcement looks much better I have to agree, but received this through my hotmail account which I'd say was a fairly popular webmail, just hope they are messing with it otherwise me thinks there is more tweaking required!!
.Ian Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 I think the HTML emails are work in progress - for example I am seeing lots of <br />'s and <p> and smilies are shown as URL's etc. But with better styling it could work well.
markopolo2002 Posted September 15, 2011 Author Posted September 15, 2011 Cmon charles, give us the lowdown :)
Feld0 Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Just wanna add that it would be cool to have HTML emails closely mimic the way posts are actually shown on the forum. So, instead of seeing this ugly -------- QUOTE -------- thing, quoted text could appear in a quote box just like it would if you were reading the thread. I'm aware that HTML emails are still very much a work-in-progress, and I wish you all at IPS the best of luck with them!
bfarber Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 What you are seeing isn't how it should appear (ref: blog entry). Please post a bug report.
IPBSupport.de Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Please change back the layout/design to the previous!!!
.Ian Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Current layout looks good, better than the first version, although would probably put a background on to the un-subscribe part to give a base to it. Getting the odd mis-aligned email, but few and far between
markopolo2002 Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Hmm, still not sure about the border, or why we need a constraint look to the email - why can't it be HTML and uncontraint to fit the width of the screen?
.Ian Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Mine does go the full width, rather than just half, and the only border is the pale blue that looks fine. What I would do though is to scroll the line ... If you have configured in your control panel to receive immediate topic reply notifications, you may receive anemail for each reply made to this topic. Otherwise, only 1 email is sent per board visit for each subscribed topic. rather than breaking half way
stoo2000 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 It looks fine in Outlook, Probably just a quirk with your webmail :P
connorhawke Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 HTML emails are hell to code for, not only because various CSS rules break but also because of the differences in rendering across so many email clients. Submit a bug report, but if it's a less used email client, go easy on them.
markopolo2002 Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Hmm, using hotmail with firefox - tried it in IE also, same width issue - seems like a hotmail issue obviously, but given it's popularity, I'd say for it not to display in hotmail is a pretty big deal

IPBSupport.de Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Current layout looks good, better than the first version, ... I can not understand this opinion, lets look at the first and current layout/design: Old (and very good) design: New (and very ugly) design: Just a few things which make the new design ugly:Box not centered Box too small Header too hight (not proportional) Header should look like the default IP.Board header Old border (and shadow) looked very very better

IPBSupport.de Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Yeah okay, lets say "much more better" :D
markopolo2002 Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Personally, I'd vote for the first one too Yeah, it is, so a bug report would be in order. Already done http://community.invisionpower.com/tracker/issue-33470-html-emails-hotmail/
.Ian Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Mine looks like the second except 100% width - maybe you have a dodgy email client ;)
IPBSupport.de Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Thunderbird, and i think YOUR email client is "dodgy" and ignore the css: table.wrap { max-width: 500px; }
Rhett Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I love the new emails personally... but no worries....you will have options! :)
Management Matt Posted September 21, 2011 Management Posted September 21, 2011 I changed it from the gradient "design" because the logo is 350ish PX which is wider than the screen on an iPhone / Android which meant the logo stretched off the screen. The email wrapper is just a normal skin template. You can edit it on your own board via the Admin CP.
markopolo2002 Posted September 21, 2011 Author Posted September 21, 2011 For me, it's really not getting much better!! ... Received this just a few minutes ago, still using Hotmail.
