  1. How about a swipe-like feature for the posts and a setting for the number of posts to display on a page? Think of the Kindle reader. It isn't as far off from what you have now but I prefer to read a smaller number of posts and (perhaps), reply right there, and flick and reply.
  2. @Makoto Just resurfacing after a long time away from the community. I have let things go for so long that now, to upgrade my board, 3.3 to 4.x, I will need to upgrade my db (MariaDB 5.5) to MariaDB 10.2. Any idea if that db upgrade will affect my current ipb 3.3 installation? Thanks for considering my request. - Brian

If I made this post in a blog, how would it look on the activity stream?

  4. Can you adjust the size of the post border?
  5. This happened to me as well. On these issues, it appears that Lindy handles them and it took over a week to hear from him.
  6. @Lindy Actually what I was asking for and what I see on the websites I mentioned, and in the link to the video screen capture in my original post is a link that appears after you scroll down a bit. Some of the sites have it appear from the side, but all of them have one thing in common - the link stays in the same location once you have scrolled down some distance. That means it essentially hovers to the lower right of the screen as you scroll down or up. Click on it and zoom, up you go. Check it out on Kenneth Cole's website, on eBay ...
  7. We run up against this issue in our community. We have a special custom-made translate button for our users to read an article in their language, based on their country of registration. But your assumption that browsers can always serve you well in handling translations depends on the language. As an admin, I curate a lot of media articles, many of which are in a foreign language. The english browser translation works well for Polish, for Dutch, for Hungarian, for Slovak, as examples. The english translation of German, Italian, and some other languages is horrible. The reader really only comprehends half of the article. The browser translator? Google.
  8. Kenneth Cole's website has this feature. National Institute of Health website has this feature. eBay has this feature. Some just show an up carrot symbol. I'm not surprised by the comments; they all point to an 'admin-esque' point of view of how the end user "should" use a website in a browser. My suggestion is based on what your average end user expects and finds convenient.
  9. Attached is a video screen capture from the website Wayfair.com - Okay, can't add the file - max file size is 30 mb and the capture is 34.7 mb. I'll try to add it as a link via Drop Box. https://www.dropbox.com/s/dbxztww4r743nsz/ScreenCaptureProject1.mp4?dl=0 As I scroll down, a return to top button appears to the right. This is so intuitive and makes browsing the website so easy. Jump to the recent, very active topic in this community about IPS 4 Stability. Lots of people are making comments. I am following the topic. I keep the forum active in one of my browser tabs. I jump around my browser, doing other things. If I click on the tab for the IPS forum, there is a notification at the base of the screen indicating that a new reply has been made to a topic I am following. I click on it. I am taken to Matt's latest comment. Now I want to move up and check my activity stream or do something else. Since there is no return to top button right there, I have to use my scroll wheel on my mouse, something not everyone has, and I have to scroll and scroll and scroll. That or I have to click and drag the vertical scroll bar to take me to the top. Suggestion: add a return to top feature as a default with the IPB board, and maybe for pages and calendar, and wherever else that involves lots of scrolling to return to the top. Justification: as a forum, a topic can have many replies and the user may be moving down and down and there is no quick way to return to the top. Before you say it: yes, I know there is a plugin for this but given this is an expected feature, it is my contention that it should be a part of the IPB default system. Okay, if you want to turn it off in the ACP, fine.
  10. perhaps but what I proposed in my earlier post was relinquishing admin control of communities that so volunteer to have the upgrades done by a QA team instead of by the forum owners themselves. this gives a level of verifiable problem identifcation that avoids the current bug system reporting
  11. This just in - an announcement about Firefox 48. http://www.zdnet.com/article/new-versions-of-firefox-prepare-for-its-biggest-change-ever/ Why mention it here? Because of the way they are introducing the new version, knowing that it will cause problems. Further to my suggestion, these volunteers would have their sites upgraded by the QA folks on the volunteer's hosts' platforms, where the QA folks could watch first hand what is happening in a non-cloud environment.
  12. I definitely think you need to do this and marry it with a few live communities that volunteer to have the QA testers have full admin access and perform the external upgrades on those sites. Those communities would be given some kind of separate ticket system that has immediate priority to fix problems on their sites. I'm not talking about cloud stuff - I'm talking about the QA testers given ftp access to third party hosted platforms. The QA testers would be sending messages to the community admins advising them of upgrades they have done. At the same time, the third party plugin developers could also volunteer (meaning that it would not be mandatory for all third party developers) to have their plugins participate in the program, meaning they would have to give immediate, full support to the QA testers if a problem arises, meaning they would send a fix to the QA testers would would install/patch to see if that is the problem or it is the IPS code is the problem.
  13. For those of us still in the dark ages, before the Republic, and the Empire, will our Mandrill Bouncer continue to function with Mandrill now "attached" to Mail Chimp? Using 3.3.4. Thanks.
  14. My philosophy mirrors that of the consulting guru from the 80's, Tom Peters: stick to your knitting. In other words, focus on what you do well. IPB does forums well but I feel that there are ecommerce solutions out there that are more robust simply because those companies focus on ... ecommerce. Similarly, same with chat and with gallery. I feel the same with blogs but the security issues surrounding Wordpress made me move our blogs to IPB. So you're wondering what this first paragraph has to do with the Spring Fashions in Milan? I tend to expound. What I am trying to explain is my philosophy for how we run our community. If you follow that philosophy, I also feel membership software is a security specialty and it is focused on working with other third party software in what the industry calls Single Sign On, or SSO. In the past, there were problems with getting IPB to bridge with other third party software. Single Sign On allows a person to login on one platform and all of the database information is passed to all the other third party software, including updates. So when a member updates their country, their address, their email, whatever it is that you choose, those fields are passed to the third party software. So we use aMember as our membership platform and login gateway. It in turn allows our members to login in to the following platforms and instantly update all of the databases and field values of our members as they change their settings. We use IPB for calendars, forums, blogs, and social groups, and some other customized applications. We use Prestashop as our ecommerce platform. We use 4images as our gallery platform. We will be using a third party chat platform. Why? Because that platform is focused on Chat. IPB has delayed and delayed and delayed chat improvements. Yet when you look around at the world of online users, they are using some form of chat be it messaging or snapchat or kik or who knows, on every device. Clearly this is an extremely important feature and it needs to have continuous focus for improvement. Only software companies that focus primarily on that area will give it the attention it needs. Once again, aMember will be the connecting source via SSO. So our members' database is maintained in aMember and it connects to Prestashop. Yes, the latter has a database devoted to ecommerce and has fields that capture sales and shopping carts but the security and access to Prestashop is still funneled through aMember. Look them up and hopefully you'll get what they do.
  15. Thanks for posting this topic and suggestion. For a new application we are developing, I asked for this feature and it took some doing but as always, the Wizard of Brooklyn made it happen (@headstand). Apparently the IPB code is not meant to do this and the efforts put forth to create this choice of notification per content item was akin to using a machete to hack a path through dense jungle undergrowth while vines were pulling at your legs and venemous snakes were snooping down from the trees.
  16. Just logged in today and happy to see the Activity is back in the main menu.  It is such a big part of 4.1 and really needs to be prominently featured.  It does so much and it can offer so much to every member.  It shouldn't be hidden.

  17. But your question was about specific groups. When I looked at specific members, it asks for authors. So that could be Marcher and TSP and Joel but not a group.
  18. Not sure if I get what you're looking for but it seems like the Stream is the wrong department. I think Advanced Search is what you want:
  19. For the power brokers in the Invision Board community, it might be very useful to add a parens counts after the activity streams, default and custom. So for my custom streams, it would show in the drop down as: New Unread Topics (16) New Files I Needed Yesterday (3) So this would probably mean adding an additional feature or tweak to the edit custom stream and default stream (in the ACP), allowing people to enable it and also to show it only depending on if a certain filter feature was selected, such as Since last logged in ?
  20. Give individual members the ability to drag and drop the upper menu. I would like to drag Activity to the far left, then have Browse, then have Marketplace, then IPS4 Resources, and finally, Clients on the far right. Everyone will be different in how they like the menu items arranged but is it that difficult to make it a part of the skin, to personalize for each member?
  21. May I suggest you avail yourself of the new activity stream? You can create a custom stream just for new files. The best you can do is to create a stream for unread new files. Although you can follow old files and see their updates, those files will have a new name for 4.0 so you'll have to refollow so not really what you want but let me try to make a new stream now ... Name of New Stream: New Files I Needed Yesterday Show Me: Content items only Tags: classifieds (since the entire ips community is waiting for the classifieds application, I'll use that as an example) Content Type: Marketplace ... click gear icon to the right, use the Narrow by to select the categories you are interested which for me means ctrl click on translations, member extensions, and translations. Read Status: Content I haven't read (because I am looking for newly released files not ones that have already been released) Ownership: Everything Follow Status: Everthing Time Period: Since my last visit Okay, that should do it. And that guy named after an angel said this new stream feature is a useless piece of garbage .... hmph! Oh, and here is a display of my custom streams, ready and waiting for me to search for me, my way, because even though the super admins think they know what is best for me as a member of this community ... I am the most important person and therefore I want everything served just to my tastes ... which is just what Lindy ordered ... it's like having my own personally made papal slippers waiting for me as I slip out of bed .
  22. Attached are five printscreen files of the 4.1 calendar. Month View - logical; easy to grasp I like the color purple or majenta ... whatever it is .. but it doesn't really fit with the default color scheme. I like the hover popup on an event. I think the dark blue or black square to indicate the current day does not work well on the eyes and with the default color scheme. The events all use a rounded corner. Looks as exciting as Charles' third cup of coffee, half drunk. Week View - still logical and quick to read but getting busy and with the Charles excitement factor, it takes more time (really) to grasp the events Same comments about the color purple or majenta I like the offset of the background and the small left and wide right. I don't like how the '1 BIRTHDAY TODAY' appears. Shouldn't it be in a badge, and in a different color? I still like the hover popup on an event. I strongly dislike the square and round wrapping styles for day and multi-day events. This is where I think Rikki could Redo ... to make the day and multi-day work better. One idea: Multi event starts with a rounded end and ends with a shaped arrow of some kind, and on the next day, the same shaped arrow starts on the left and then ends with the rounded end (which you already use). But the design of these long shapes is so boring and blase (with or without the accent) that it makes Charles's third cup of coffee look really attractive. I don't like the black color for the current day - it makes the current day spelled out hard to read, and as I said earlier, it doesn't fit in with the color scheme. Too harsh and negative. Day View - I decided to go back a day and look at Sept 11 instead of Sept 12. That way I could hope to see what multiple events look like. Strange ... it only shows two events. What happened to Happy Friday? A bug? I like the even-shaped layout. I don't get sea sick. I like the carry over of the personalized event banners. I don't like the hidden abrupt brick wall of 'Event details.' I suggest an ACP definable character limit of the event description to fit in for one or two lines. It helps to be intuitive and instantly understandable. I don't like 'ALL DAY' in the left sidebar because it is misleading and portrays events as happening all day when most likely they do not. Just use a different language string? Event Stream - confusing; illogical, busy The printscreen shows most of what I want to say. Left to right? Right to left? Down one column then up the next or Down one column then up and down the next? Nothing makes sense and all the shapes are different sizes. This looks less attractive than Charles' half drunk and spilled cup of coffee on a bunch of papers. Rikki double overtime pay is authorized (Lindy said so).
  23. I hear you and DO NOT feel bad at posting your confusion or expressing your frustration. Although developers do, sometimes, provide installation guides, very often then skip over the basics that us non-admin types like you and me just don't get because no where is it or has it been explained how to turn on the water in the sink. So for your general knowledge, when you download and unzip a file, and presuming you do find your forum root folder, then you upload the main folders, like admin, and public, and stuff like like that, by clicking on the folder from your desktop and then selecting the forum root folder.. DO NOT do what I did, which was to upload the admin folder to the admin folder. That just installs an admin folder UNDER the existing admin folder. Next, don't worry about if all the files inside the main downloaded folders will be transferred to the right sub folders underneath the forum root folder. They will! The system knows where to put everything. What I do is select the main folders of the downloaded file, and just upload them to the forum root folder, one by one. Sure, the whizzo developers on here probably have a faster way to do it but I am one of those slow and careful types, and those whizzos are not sitting next to you at your desk to fill in the "assumptions" that they think you knew when they told you to this, that, and the other. Listen to AndyF. He has the most amazing patience. He might even be a reincarnation of Gandhi.
  24. I would like to add my voice to consideration of restoring the current notification settings that in place for our 3.x subscriptions. To presume that all of our members will eagerly and enthusiastically respond to an upgrade email from me, telling them to drop what they are doing, log in and suddenly become familiar with the new format and settings, instantly understand it, and reset everything that they can't remember how it was set before to their preferred settings is really pushing the envelope. Why can't this just be an upgrade preference from 3.x to 4.x, if it is so complicated to include as default?
  25. unfortunately, no ... unless IPS brings back the fancy filters they used to have .... for ip.content blocks
