Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
cmiller Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I am so lost, I sign in here almost every day, but may or may not have time to look at all the new posts. Then, once I am signed off, I can no longer see thread that I haven't read yet, because it only shows me threads that are new since I was last on. I tried using the search feature, but didn't see there how to search for new posts since a certain date. Is this feature, and the feature that takes you to the last read post of a thread gone? Getting lots of feedback like this still and people are hating the site. I haven't even logged out since the switch from vbulletin to see this for myself, but sure enough - ALL of the posts go away and they have to start from scratch. What a mess :( Any ETA on the fix for this?
optrexnz Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 not again. 3.2 for the vnc fix, but your question above is different, and as I am sure you have been told beforeI am so lost, I sign in here almost every day, but may or may not have time to look at all the new posts. Then, once I am signed off, I can no longer see thread that I haven't read yet, because it only shows me threads that are new since I was last on. You asked for this setting http://community.invisionpower.com/topic/331434-correct-behavior-of-view-new-content/page__view__findpost__p__2076654 it does what you asked, in that if the user selects show me all new content since my last visit. What they are now asking for is the reverse, and this is probably why its a user setting and not an admin setting (each user is different) they need to change the settings themselves in user settings /index.php?app=core&module=usercp under Search Settings - View New Content Method change to - show me all content that I have not read
cmiller Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 Doesn't work man, I don't care how many times I ask for it or how many different ways it's asked. First, let's check my settings....set just the way I want them! Now lets hit "View New Content" Look there! A post (and I wont click on it, so it is UNREAD!!!) Ok, now i am going to log out, and back in, and then hit VNC again: Where did the post go? It's unread, but its gone. It's gone because VNC is broke on EVERY level. How in the heck is a user supposed to keep track of new posts when VNC is worthless no matter what setting they choose? I don't know how any decent forum is surviving with this VNC issue. :( not again. 3.2 for the vnc fix, but your question above is different, and as I am sure you have been told before You asked for this setting http://community.invisionpower.com/topic/331434-correct-behavior-of-view-new-content/page__view__findpost__p__2076654 it does what you asked, in that if the user selects show me all new content since my last visit. paw Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 ? who visits a forum, starts to read it, then logs out and then wants to read more threads ? does not make any sense at all to me are not most people electing to stay logged in ?

Umm.... I do that all the time. We run a business forum and security is important to some people so they log out.Other people use a shared computer and they don't want a co worker logging into their account.
Management Charles Posted February 15, 2011 Management Posted February 15, 2011 VNC is being worked on (today actually).
cmiller Posted February 15, 2011 Author Posted February 15, 2011 what are your DB topic marker settings? You mean these?

Rhett Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 In order to best suit vb users I have done the following and it helps a bunchSet all new members so that the default topic marking is set to "View all content I have not read"I set all existing members to this above setting as well.I also added a link in the navbar for "Active Post" As well as "New Post" By doing these above modifications it has somewhat eased the pissed off members.... but there are still bugs in VNC as it will often show content that has already been read... but this is the best solution I have found to date. I'm glad to see this is being worked on, but it should be a #1 priority as it's a big issue for vb converts and I have had many people even go to vb 4.x rather then IPB due to this.. and that's saying a lot as vb 4.x is crap imo.
MadMikeyB Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 on my forum. I simply added a hook which added a "What's New" link which links to the ACTIVE content. This way the users used to vB have the "What's New" in the same place and does roughly the same thing.

Good point! How did you manage to get all new and existing users set to the correct setting? I thought someone mentioned that it would be difficult because of the joins or something related to the database config? on my forum. I simply added a hook which added a "What's New" link which links to the ACTIVE content. This way the users used to vB have the "What's New" in the same place and does roughly the same thing. I did the same thing, but linked it to the regular "new content" that VNC links to when a user is logged in. Maybe I should try it that way though. Thanks!
cmiller Posted February 16, 2011 Author Posted February 16, 2011 What would be really nice would be the ability to add a dropdown to the nav bar for "Views posts from 12/24/48 hours, 5 days, 10 days, etc". I used to have that setup on VB and users LOVED it. I see if we use VNC to "View Active Content" (what the links changes to when you log out) then at the bottom there is a dropdown with some options but I don't really see that the values are past in the query string in the URL bar so I don't think we can really make a link to different time frames or anything. Anyone know differently?
optrexnz Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 In order to best suit vb users I have done the following and it helps a bunch

Set all new members so that the default topic marking is set to "View all content I have not read"
I set all existing members to this above setting as well.
Please explain how you completed this mod. I've asked before and was told it was not possible to do point 2 A step by step process would be very nice

Management Matt Posted February 16, 2011 Management Posted February 16, 2011 For "View New Content that I have not read" it needs access to the member's topic markers which are stored in the database. When you log out, IP.Board cannot access this information which is why it won't show. However, I do understand what you are saying. We have several views: "View active content, View new content, View all content since my last visit" scattered around which we are consolidating in 3.2.

Donkerrood Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 On our site we link to: http://[www.domain.com]/forum/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=active&period=week Which shows the topics with replies to it in the last week. Works as a charm. When logged out, it depends on whether guests have access to the search engine or not to show the active topics. On our site, guests don't, so they are not allowed to view the active topics.
Management Matt Posted February 16, 2011 Management Posted February 16, 2011 But then we log back in, so why is it still gone after that? It shouldn't disappear when you log back in unless you have it set to show posts 'since your last visit'.
minds Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Matt, will you add in the functionality in ACP to block certain forums from appearing in VNC per user basis. Something like this mod does. I really think such feature is long overdue: http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/3240-sos31-block-forums-from-view-new-content-v200/. even another related thing would be nice - an ability to mark a certain topic that you never wish to see in the VNC list (because the forum itself is interesting, but this showing up of a non-interesting and popular topic is needless for you.
Management Matt Posted February 16, 2011 Management Posted February 16, 2011 I think that when we're done, everyone will be very happy with the changes to the VNC system.
AnthonyKinson Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 I'm confused... "Show new content since last visit" does exactly that. Its showing you any new content since you logged out. If you see one topic in the list, then log out, and log back in (as you have done) and it's no longer there, its because it's not had anything new posted in it since you logged out. I thought that was how it was supposed to work, otherwise it should be called "Show Unread Posts / Topic"

I'll need FTP and an ACP log in if that's OK.
