Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
rgf100 Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 I'm not too keen on the way the search box in the header changes function according to where you are. I suspect the vast majority of people using that box want to search the forums - that's where the bulk of content is, after all. Eg, if you're reading a topic it switches to 'search this topic' - but what is more likely, that someone will want to search that topic, or they'll want to search the forums to find some other topic to refer to? For my money, we'd be better off with the behaviour defaulting to 'forums' and leaving the user to select the others as and when they want to.
TCWT Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 I absolutely agree! Most think "This Forum" is the entire forum as opposed to "Forums". Also, most won't know that little icon on the right is the Advanced Search. How about adding a tooltip when you hover the mouse over it?
sound Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 related as it would make the "searching wrong place" less frustrating a usefull addition would be if the search box retained the query typed in very frustrating having to re-enter completely if a spelling mistake related as it would make the "searching wrong place" less frustrating a usefull addition would be if the search box retained the query typed in once search is done very frustrating having to re-enter completely if a spelling mistake or wish to tweak the query
3DKiwi Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 You get my vote. If I want to search this topic then I'll press Ctrl + F and use my browser's search tools. 95% of the time I'll want to search for something in the forums and not the topic that I'm currently in. 3DKiwi
TCWT Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 I can't believe no one has posted a solution on how to accomplish this. :(
bfarber Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 We have many customers who want contextual search. I don't believe there are any plans to change how search defaults to something different based on where you are in the software at this time.

I disagree, The first seach should be on the whole site (or forums) and then with the option to narrow it down, similar to how the VNC is used, "Since my last visit" and so on, but of course with wording like "In the forum you previously were in" and In the topic you previously were in". Or at least a setting for the user/admin to choose a default search method/area.
TCWT Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 Over 90% of the time, members would want to search all the forums. I still don't understand why search default to this topic in topic view. At least give instructions on how to change the behavior.

At least give instructions on how to change the behavior. I think I've got it figured out and working as I want it to, but I've not tested it on a live board. It's pretty simple, go through the code for the drop down and remove all the <if . . . > checked </if> statements, and edit the one for the forums app. I'll copy the code below. Look and Feel > Global Templates > Quick Search As I say, not tested extensively, and not at all on a live board. And this is the current 3.2 template, btw. Edit: Actually, not posting the code, not sure I'm allowed to do so in a public section.
bfarber Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 We previously had two search boxes in forum and topic view. One to search the entire forums, and one for contextual search. We received complaints that this confused users - they would enter their search term in the wrong box, and generally found it confusing to have two on one page. It is similar to Google really. If you go to Google, click on their images tab, and use the search box, it searches images. If you go to the news tab, it searches news. It's the same here, really. (This doesn't address contextual "this topic" or "this forum", but rather app-based searching depending upon the app you are in).
surinp3 Posted July 26, 2011 Posted July 26, 2011 I have no problems with the default search being in the gallery, blog or anywhere else. What is confusing is, you are in topic which you have just finished reading, and wish to search for something. You need three clicks before you can type a search, done in all the forums. Not very easy for the average user.

rgf100 Posted August 9, 2011 Author Posted August 9, 2011 I've been spending quite a bit of time on here lately trying to get a portal set up, and you know what - I'm constantly resetting the search box from 'this topic' to 'forums'. It's irritating.
