Management Matt Posted May 7, 2008 Management Posted May 7, 2008 I think it's worth nothing that IPB 3.0 is a brand new version. A clean slate. A chance to right wrongs. We care greatly about our community of modification authors but we simply cannot move forward without making sweeping changes. We've been so careful over the past few years to make sure most of the changes we make are largely backwards compatible. We've had advanced HTML logic available but we've not used it because we're still mainly using IPB 1.x template names and formats. We decided that as IPB 3.0 is a new version number, then we can finally make all the large changes we've wanted to make. In terms of skins; it's impossible to create backwards compatible template sets because *everything* has changed. Board index, forum index and topics are all generated by one single template per view. In previous releases, we stitched several different templates together fixing in place certain elements. You have much more flexibility with the new system. You want board stats at the top? No problem, at the side? No problem. You want active users at the top too? Go nuts! You really can move around the entire display now. This is all made possible with the new framework. It's unfortunate that old modifications can no longer work, but that's the nature of software development. We will, where possible, distribute migration documents to ease the transition. For the most part all you need to do is refactor some code.
WoLeRiNe` Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 What colour will it be?Yellow/Navy Blue These colours are perfect :P
Management Charles Posted May 7, 2008 Management Posted May 7, 2008 How many different original skins are for the IPB 3.0 planned? At least one. I know right. We'll have a few more depending on the time before release. Of course our new skinning engine will make deploying new ones post-release so much easier than now.
zigs Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Yellow/Navy Blue These colours are perfect :P I would prefer purple :P Is there any chance a mini shout box could be added to 3.0 that could be turned off in ACP for those who don't want it please?
TestingSomething Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Well as much as I hate that a lot won't immediately work with it, I am still excited about a new version. I want to use it today though. :( :)
TestingSomething Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 As far as colors it seems like blue is the only color that looks nice to me, but it is used so often and so many places it's hard to have a unique looking skin with blue because I feel like people will think "oh it's just blue... that's like the same skins for everything". I want a nice red skin and maybe green, but I still don't see how anything other than a nice brightish shade of blue will ever go over well for default. Definitely will be ncie if there is more than 1 choice at launch. Although I would rather have only 1 if it means getting the software sooner. :)
Lindsey_ Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Well as much as I hate that a lot won't immediately work with it, I am still excited about a new version. I want to use it today though. :( :) I'm installing it on localhost and go bug hunting while making a site/forum like i am with nexus <_<
IBTheme Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 So if it is that easy.. there will be no need to hire custom skinners?I guess that depends on how good you are at making things look the way you want them to. Uh Oh! I'm in Twubble!
Mark H. Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Nonsense, my dear. You'll be able to produce even MORE stunning skins than you already do, for people like me who don't yet know a template bit from a CSS wrapper...... :) RV
princetontiger Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Biggest request - slim down the CSS to maybe 20 or 30 classes
IBTheme Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Nonsense, my dear. You'll be able to produce even MORE stunning skins than you already do, for people like me who don't yet know a template bit from a CSS wrapper...... :) RV  Thank You Rainbow. I am so excited to test drive the whole 3.0 skinning process I'm ready to bust! Reading Charles's hints on what we can expect was pure torture. lol  This may be the best thing to happen to IPS since they opened their doors. I have a good feeling about this, and an even better feeling about the impact it will have on the IPS community.
TrixieTang Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I've been using vB for over a year, but I'm really considering switching over to IPB since it integrates with another software that vB has issues integrating with, I'd like to be sure 3.0 will give more features than vB so I know it really will be a good investment to switch. I'm assuming that "admin choice" means that a lot of those features and more are probably part of the plan for 3.0? And yes, I asked this before but it seems to have been flooded away... will there be an option to globally disable profile pics in 3.0? (I'm assuming they probably will be) Also, will avatar limits be usergroup permissions rather than global?
IBTheme Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Will avatar limits be usergroup permissions rather than global? This is a question I would be interested in know the answer to as well. I would also like to see a built in feature that allows us to see who all has read and viewed a topic, not just the viewed and read count. Plus, knowing who voted in a poll and who has downloaded an attachment. Sherri
BryanH Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 He does still use font tags. Here's just a "for instance". To generate a topic page with 3 posts, about 45 different template bits are called. Not so easy to skin, I'd imagine. I think that's down to one template bit now...a tad easier to get the look and feel of the page down how you want it, wouldn't you agree? Based on that, how exactly could we "upgrade" an existing skin to work within that new structure? It's just not realistically possible. Variables passed to the template bits are different. Dates are formatted different. Everything's different. This is a major update, and it just isn't possible to do some of the cool stuff we want to do while retaining support for 2.x skins or modifications. We hope that the changes we make will make it easier to skin and mod IPB, and that the resources available will quickly repopulate. I'm VERY VERY SUPER excited about this! I just hope there will be enough time with the betas and release candidates for us to re-skin our forums on a test site (before we upgrade the live site). We use over 30 skins on our message board!
TestingSomething Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 When it comes down to it, what I care "most" about is performance in general. As smoothe and quick as possible load times for topics and profiles.
IBTheme Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 When it comes down to it, what I care "most" about is performance in general. As smoothe and quick as possible load times for topics and profiles. My thoughts exactly. But the idea of new features, easier skinning and a new look all together is just icing on the cake! (w00t)
Tarun Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Uh Oh! I'm in Twubble! I agree with what others said, you're in no trouble. You make some amazing skins. I'll have to look through them more, but they are breathtaking. Edit: It does seem to be a bit like a deterrent to need to be logged in to browse though. ;) ---- Have they addressed the question about if people who are perpetual/lifetime license holders will be able to upgrade to 3.0 without any problems?
awaisuk Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Here is one more good suggestions: 1. Ability to BOLD and ITALIC Topic titles. Permissions can be set on who can use that or not... 2. Force Read Topic - This will force all the members to view a topic before they can use the whole forum again Thanks.
zigs Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Have they addressed the question about if people who are perpetual/lifetime license holders will be able to upgrade to 3.0 without any problems? I am wondering this, my perpeptual licence no longer has a renewal date on it for support...
Mark Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Have they addressed the question about if people who are perpetual/lifetime license holders will be able to upgrade to 3.0 without any problems? IPS has never (even when the pricing strategy changed) given people any less than what they signed up for - if you signed up for a perpetual / lifetime license which promised you lifetime updates, then I am sure that is what you will get.
Lindsey_ Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 The end of 2008. I would expect beta versions out by then :)
Lindsey_ Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Could be then end of 2009 like I was thinking before that blog post was done ;)
TestingSomething Posted May 8, 2008 Posted May 8, 2008 Well they said fourth quarter or "possibly sooner" so I doubt it will be the end of the year before betas. but who nows. As far as perpetuals/lifetimes, if those aren't honored I definitely am going to be beyond mad. It would mean they were a scam if they aren't honored still becuase buying yearly/standard ones wouldn't have added up to the price of those yet at all for me. You can't just tell people something includes lifetime upgrades and then randomly change it. Even if there were some loophole they would get a ton of negative press over something like that.
